Måneskin will represent Italy at Eurovision 2021 with “Zitti e buoni”. The news was confirmed at the Sanremo winner’s press conference on Sunday morning.
Måneskin will represent Italy at the Eurovision 2021 with “Zitti e buoni”
The confirmation was not unexpected. The four piece band had already revealed their intentions during an Instagram live after their win. But the official announcement arrived this morning at the press conference.
Måneskin’s Sanremo win
The 71st edition of the Sanremo Music Festival has come to an end with a twist: rock band Måneskin won the crown and the traditional leoncino — the little golden lion awarded to the sanremese winner.
The quartet launched by X Factor Italy immediately caught the audience’s attention with electrifying performances of their powerful entry “Zitti e buoni”, but they were not on the podium in the provisional ranking before the start of the final, reached instead thanks to the support of the televote.
The overall combined results throughout the week consisted of televoting (25%), the press jury (25%), the orchestra (25%) and the demoscopic poll (25%). All 26 finalists started off with the scores achieved in the four previous evenings behind them when they performed their entries on the night judged by televoting.
After the first round of voting, Ermal Meta, Francesca Michielin & Fedez and Måneskin advanced to the second and last round. Here all the scores were reset to zero and the demoscopic jury (33%), the press room (33%) and the televote (34%) came back into play. In the end, it was Måneskin who emerged triumphant!
Who are Sanremo 2021 winners Måneskin?
Måneskin (Danish for ‘moonshine’) is an Italian rock band from Rome, consisting of lead vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The band rose to fame after ending up second in the eleventh series of the Italian series of X Factor in 2017.
Immediately after the talent show, they skyrocketed in the charts, collecting several platinum records thanks to the first single “Chosen” and the songs included in the debut album “Il ballo della vita”: “Morirò da re”, “L’altra dimensione”, “Le parole lontane” and the super hit #1 in the Italian FIMI Singles Chart and 5x platinum “Torno a casa”.
Are you happy with Italy’s choice? Let us know in the comments below.
Leading singer is so hot and handsome i’m dead
…and you still haven’t seen him poledancing on the heels! 😉
wait… what?!
He did an Amazing performance in the italian x factor pool dancing in heels. I don’t know of the performance Is still on YouTube. The Song they performed Is call “kiss This”. Check It out and thank me later 😉
Why does everyone I support loses or flops? Am I jinxed or just a lame loser? Always on the losing side. ???
Last time Italy sent some sort of rock was in 2014, but we remember how that went.
That wasn’t rock. It was pop with a bit of rockish instrumentation.
It’s not exactly my kind of music, but I must admit it’s well done and I enjoy this more than Finland. Something different than we’ve come to expect from Italy.
I am so happy for them! I have been following them for a while now and… I cannot believe they are really taking part in Eurovision? Their songs are superb, their lyrics too, their aesthetic… I just love everything about them. I hope they can get a great result for Italy, they are super dupper humble and deserve nothing but good things! <3
It ‘s not my music. I don ‘t like it.
Cease.
I’ve been their fan for a while and they haven’t disappointed me. They were bold enough to not try to fit their music into what’s expected from a Sanremo act and the risk paid off. I personally prefer it to the Finnish entry, but I think both share great energy and memorable hooks. Rock fans should avoid the trap of believing there’s space for just one rock song to do well. If pop fans can support 2, 3 divas at the same time, why can’t the same people support both Italy and Finland? I just hope the conservative juries don’t… Read more »
Very happy with this and good luck Italy! However, disappointed for Irama who had a great song but hadn’t a chance of winning as he couldn’t perform live due to quarantine restrictions – 5th place was amazing for him and just shows how the quality of the song was appreciated. On a side note, really enjoyed Francesco Gabbani’s appearance as a guest supporting Ornella Vanoni with the song he wrote for her. I’m sure he appreciated being a guest and not a competitor on this occasion!
I think the only thing that can stop Italy from doing well this year is juries.
There were five or six songs at San Remo I put in front of Maneskin but glad this won as it’s something different for Italy. Not a winner but comfortably in the top ten, a lot more memorable than most of the songs picked so far.
Considering the vast majority of sites putting them up are run by actual bookmakers. Its far more likely that the bookies have put them 4th because they genuinely believe they should be up there.
Tbh I dont disagree, the casual fans will absolutely latch on to this as they do every italian entry, and it has the class and polish to appeal to the juries which we havent really had from a rock entry since the jury vote came back.
Hard Rock Hallelujah ??
Now the real question is if Italy and Finland can counter each other or if both can achieve a decent position.
They don’t sound the same at all….
Finland’s entry is nu metal, the italian entry is rock with hints of funk and rap. I see no reason to compare them
Well done, Italy, you know the ESC needs variety and difference brings good results to contestants. I hope Spain can someday follow your example and I’m wishing you the best.
Love it! My new #1
I wanted Francesca & Fedez to win 🙁
Personally not my thing but it feels authentic and could do well. Better than some of the more manufactured entires this year. I think though that if Irama had won he would have 100% gained Italy their third win with a song that in time would have been considered a Eurovision great. Oh well. Not to be. But good luck Italy.
Top!! They deserve to win this year
Well this is my personal winner 🙂
As i said before, good choice. Something different than the usual Italian ballads we get. My concern is that they fight for the same audience as Finland and I think Finland will win that fight. But a good song none the less, should do really well. Italy always does..
Exactly my thoughts. In this genre (rock) Finland has the better song this year.
I could see both doing well. Same audience or not, both can get wide support
I think you’re right about this, the finnish entry is more appealing commercially but there’s also that stereotype that Finland knows this genre better than anything else.
Both can score well, but winners? Maybe not.
If you view anything heavier than basic mainstream skinny woman dance pop as just “noise” or “screaming”, please stop following eurovision. Your contribution is not needed
Agreed.
No need to attack basically more than half of the Eurovision community.
well I’d never be THAT straightforward to call half of the community ignorant idiots but thanks for supporting my point anyway ?
Daily reminder that since 2013 the only female uptempo songs to finish in the top 3 of the jury, televote, or overall score are toy and fuego. And that Fuego after all the hype almost lost in the televote to non mi avete fatto niente.
My winners so far… By far.

Watching the livestream I almost fall asleep but Maneskin came to the rescue. Damiano can perform even without an audience! His voice is amazing and the same as in the studio version. Clearly the winner! Thanks Italy for bringing quality every year!
Excluding Il Volo (I don’t like them) I’ve always been proud of our choices , every year a different genres.
Grand Amore is actually one of my favourite ESC songs of all time. Most played at least. And this year’s also awesome!
Yeah, that’s pretty impressive how Italy’s entries changed from R&B to Pop to Rapcore. Some other countries should take notes.
Wasn’t my favourite but Italy is still my 1st with this, nonetheless.
Thank you Italy for giving us the Italian version of Jane’s Addiction that we didn’t know we needed!
A year like this I can see Italy go as far as winning the televote, by being that far away from Formula A. They will def be remembered by the viewers, to say the least…
Not sure how the juries will judge this though. But another top 10 for Italy seems pretty certain.
poor Finland, i think Italy will overshadow them, no way 2 rock songs will enter the Top 10.
Italy has a big advantage in televoting and i can see many juries voting for them (top 10)
If we have to put metal and rock songs in one group then why do we have say that they cancel each other out or the other just completely steals the other’s votes. Why can’t we just join forces and be happy that the whole contest isn’t just ballads and dance bops?
My opinion is that in the eyes of public (not industry professionals) they will be put in the same group and votes will be divided.Finland has the rock-pop song but Italy has a more edgier sound which is completely unique.
Finland has the advantage of the English language but at the same time Italy has a beautiful language and they are always doing well in televoting, plus diaspora.
Another benefit for Italy is the extreme (for some) performance.
Eurovision 2005 had three rock songs in the top 10: Norway, Switzerland and Moldova (if we count Zdob si Zdub as rock).
Switzerland wasn’t exactly in the same genre of Norway. Moldova wasn’t rock but more like ethnic.
What I like this year about The Big Five is how diverse they are. Songs of Maneskin, Barbarw, Blas and Jendrik couldn’t be more different. And the good part is… I do like them all. With disappointments in so many national finals, at least I have something to say nice things about.
Bonus point – Victoria is the first female winner of Sanremo since 2014.
It depends what you mean by young? Ages 6 to 10 are going to lap up Jendrick’s effort – and I mean that seriously rather than a cheap shot at him – the way it is produced, younger children will really like it – I have already tried it out so have some evidence.
Of course, I was being a little factitious. I understand your point – the “yoof” market is not being catered for. It is a little bit mad when Flo Rida is being jumped on as the most “current” thing out there. But hasn’t it always been thus with ESC and isn’t that a part of the charm? I would love to see artists like Poorstacy or Aitch in the contest, but I just can’t see it happening.
While individual taste is non necessarily generational, I’d say that Germany pretty much aims at younger audiences, Spain is pretty age-neutral, France is more vintage (but I see a lot of support from younger viewers too) and Italy is an interesting case – old-school instrumental with lyrics primarily aimed at younger generations.
It’s obvious that you are not familiar with the Italian music industry (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Maneskin are a big name among the Italian youth and 50+ y/o here tend to go for old school Italian ballads. I can see some 50+ people voting them, but the vast majority of their votes definitely comes from their core audience of teenagers and young adults.
If my dream ever comes true and the song that I wrote represents any country, hopefully UK, I’ll make sure it premieres on wiwibloggs first. 😛
What a banger. So glad they won
This is great news! Italy never fails to impress!
Måneskin per la vittoria!
Italy used to send much more charming entries than this one.
Senhit + Flo Rida. It’s a song that I was waiting for.
Full version is out too. Just not official channels.
Rock on babies!
WE NEED THE FLO RIDA ARTICLE ASAP WHAT IS HAPPENING??? SAN MARINO ACTUALLY A CONTENDER FOR TOP 5 NO WAY!!!
For REAL! 😀
I would love to see San Marino in the final four on screen during Eurovision voting
In my view , Finland are doing this genre better. So they should win the jury battle but being Italy Maneskin will probably steal a lot of televotes away from them . It’s not likely Finland will win now.
Well, these songs don’t really belong to the same genre, unless you mean “heavier than mainstream pop”. Also it’s not like juries can’t put them both high in their rankings… I’m not saying this is what’s going to happen, it’s just not impossible.
They are not the same genre.
Having guitars in two songs doesn’t mean this is the same genre.
Blind Channel, Maneskin and Tornike from Georgia will be perfect friends in Rotterdam. They can make together mash-up of ESC rock songs. I prefer Blind Channel, their song is winning material for me, but Maneskin are great too. They are little bit like Marilyn Manson, it promises unique stage show.
Blind Channel, Maneskin and Tornike sounds Great! If only Norway and Sweden would have send Jorn and Lillasyster aswell. What a Dream!
So Finland and Italy will have to share the very few votes that hardrock usually receives at Eurovision. The one exception of course was Hardrock Hallelujah, but that performance was fun, the song had a melody and the artists were not too serious about themselves. These two songs on the other hand are just plain noise. I wonder which of the two will end up last.
A great choice! 2 of the Big 5 are in it to win it this year!
this is going to be WILD
Love them!
And there is a little mistake in the article-it was 50 percent televoting during the first round(that’s why them and fedez&francesca made the top 3)
So excited. They are going to be like a blast of fresh air through the contest. I can see them doing very well with their aesthetic and sound.
This has gone right to the top of my list.
Yes! I loved their performance
In other news Victoria just posted a snap from the set of her Eurovision 2021 song. It doesn’t look like it will be Ugly Cry. Seeing what she is wearing, that resembles pyjamas, I assume it might be Imaginary Friend. I’m probably wrong though.
PS. I’m warming up to Maneskin. I hope Irama enters Sanremo next year though.
This year is cursed. I laugh and cry in the same time.
this year is a disaster
Isn’t it almost confirmed that Imaginary friend will be the song? It has the most views out of all the EP songs she released.
Although, i think Ugly Cry was a better choice.
Irama needs to redeem himself next year. Coronavirus messed up his chances. I’m watching his other performances now. He is a great performer, totally engaging, and his songs are great. “La ragazza con il cuore di latta” is his best lyrics. “La genesi del tuo colore” is a different level of musicality.
a great choice
