Spain’s Blas Cantó is polishing the last details ahead of his departure to Rotterdam for Eurovision 2021. In a new interview with broadcaster RTVE, this year’s Spanish representative has shared a taste of what to expect from his staging in the Ahoy arena while finishing off his rehearsals in Madrid.

Blas Cantó will sing “Voy a Quedarme” at Eurovision 2021, a song filled with deep emotion. The Spanish delegation have brought onboard staging director Marvin Dietmann to look after the visual elements of Blas’ performance. Both Blas and Marvin explain to RTVE that they are confident they are on track with everything for Rotterdam.

Blas Cantó discusses Eurovision 2021 staging

Blas Cantó’s staging for the contest is a secret, just like the new version of “Voy a Quedarme” that will feature only at Eurovision. However, both Blas and Marvin shed some light on what people can expect on the big stage.

Blas’ staging is carefully crafted and will see the song’s story come to life. Now mastering the last rehearsals in Madrid, Blas is relaxed knowing he can locate all the cameras:

“These rehearsals are very important to locate all cameras and stay unafraid when I see these cameras coming to me. As a result, I will stay relaxed [on the stage] and be able to focus on my mission, which is what I have to do: to sing.”

The Spanish star continues and discusses more about how the staging will help bring out the emotion of the song:

“This is a curated project. We have all the elements to stir emotion. The song has a lyrical burden and an emotional background that is very important to me. This has been the worst year of my life and the staging will reflect the necessity of hope for everything that has happened while paying tribute to the love of my life.”

Marvin Dietmann, who is also the staging director for six other countries at this year’s contest, believes that Blas’ performance will be a magical moment and materialise the meaning of the song:

“Blas’ story will come to life on stage and we will find every magical aspect of the song.”

Blas Cantó and Marvin Dietmann’s experience of working together

Blas and Marvin are both delighted to be working together. The preperations for Eurovision started as early as January, when they both met to draft the staging direction for the national selection Destino Eurovisión before moving onto ideas for Rotterdam. This collaboration has not lost any strength since then and both share the same appreciation about each other, as Blas firstly explains:

“He is wonderful. He has everything in his head and I think he explains it very well. We get along.”

Marvin Dietmann tells RTVE that, in his sixteen years of professional experience working with great artists, few can sing with as much truth and from the bottom of their hearts as Blas does. He elaborates:

“He is an authentic artist, which is not easy to find out there. I have come across a few that can sing trusting who they are and from the bottom of their hearts. And Blas is one of them”.

In addition, Marvin ensures that Spain is on track for Rotterdam and also shares some key points on how to do well at Eurovision:

“You got to have a great professional with a very great team and song. If that’s your base and you pack authenticity and emotion on it, that’s the only way audiences can understand your performance. And I think we are on great track for Rotterdam.”

Expect darker colours for Blas’ outfit

The staging and the new version of “Voy a Quedarme” that will be heard in Rotterdam are not the only secrets the Spanish delegation have. Blas Cantó’s outfit is of great interest for many knowing his love for clothing. Despite not confirming any style in specific, Blas has, however, recently told RTVE that his outfit will be darker – if not black:

“The only thing I will say about my outfit is that it will pay tribute to Lina Morgan because I’m always wearing black.”

This quote is inspired by the Spanish actress, singer and vedette Lina Morgan, who is famous for her acting roles in theatrical pieces such as in Vaya Par de Gemelas. In this show, she appears in one scene with a brighter dress, saying: “One has to change one’s image right?”. When asked about a previous wonderful dress, she goes on: “Probably was the black one? I have the black one… and the black one again, and also I have the black dress”.

If that is true, then black it is!

Blas is a great guy and talented! Based on what they said, i am starting to become confident about his staging and chances to do better than most fans expect. I think juries will appreciate his staging but he is facing fierce competition from Switzerland and France.
