At her Eurovision 2021 first rehearsal on Sunday she was pretty in pink. Shortly afterwards, Malta’s Destiny took time to have an interview with wiwiblogger William.
The “Je Me Casse” singer shared her thoughts on singing in the Rotterdam Ahoy arena for the first time and explained some of the creative decisions behind her performance.
Interview: Malta’s Destiny at Eurovision 2021
As a bookies favourite and fan favourite in the competition, many people are willing Destiny to do well at Eurovision 2021. The Maltese star noted that she felt this energy when undertaking her first run-throughs on stage:
“I really enjoyed it on stage and I felt the vibe. I’m finally on stage, finally singing, finally showcasing Destiny, my voice and everything – the performer that I’ve turned into. I’m very happy, I’m very pleased and I’m very thankful for my team who were incredible also – the dancers were amazing. I’m very happy with the outcome.”
Destiny effortlessly oozes charisma when performing. But she does admit that she was still nervous before taking the stage:
“I was [nervous], yes. I was, but I have to hide it. But when I went on stage and I saw everything I was like ‘this is your time’ and I just started singing and performing.”

“I feel that I look beautiful”
Destiny instantly turned heads when she appeared in her bright pink stage outfit, which mixes contemporary pop diva with 1920’s flapper girl. In our interview, Destiny explains that the primary goal when choosing a costume for Eurovision 2021 was to pick something that she personally felt confident and beautiful in:
“I feel confident in it and that’s what matters. I feel that I look beautiful. So I’m very happy with my look. I chose it because I feel confident in it and I feel like I can move, I can shake and shimmy.”
The confidence and power that Destiny feels in her eye-catching outfit is what lets her truly shine like the star she is. She goes on to talk about how she feels when taking off down the stairs and strutting across the stage:
“I feel like a superstar. I feel very, very good when I’m walking and I’m dancing and I’m moving. It’s like the wow moment for me.”
While the Maltese singer’s outfit received mixed reviews online, at the end of the day it’s how Destiny herself feels when wearing it on stage that is the most important thing. This marries up with the lyrics of “Je Me Casse”, which are all about female empowerment and letting women know they can be self-assured in themselves.
Destiny elaborates further about this message:
“I want to let all the women out there know they’re beautiful, to know their worth. They should be confident in their own skin and I think we shouldn’t let social media influence us because we’re so beautiful. I just want to make women out there feel good and feel positive about themselves”.
The proof of all of this is naturally in the cut of the performance that will be broadcast on television. For now, Destiny is happy with the recording she saw following her first rehearsal:
“I was relieved. […] I was so happy when I saw the tape because all the work I’ve put into it, the outcome is very, very good.”
Watch the full interview above to see Destiny also discuss the support from her mother, not trying to put pressure on herself and good luck charms.
She also gives us some tips on where to travel should we ever end up in Malta (perhaps next year around May).
Are you happy to see Destiny feel so positive about her Eurovision 2021 stage outfit? What was your favourite aspect of her first rehearsal? Let us know in the comments below!
She’s an overweight teen heading for health issues.
Sorry but it has to be said.
Why does that have to be said? Your remark really adds 0 to the discussion about eurovision and the songs.
she is after all just a 18 years old girl.. If I were on that age, maybe I would love that color so much too..
Ditch the dress or lose the contest, girl!
Okay, I never joined the choir of those writing negative things about Malta, because I saw no reason for it, but this does it for me. Why, you ask? So … she’s – coincidentally, of course – wearing a dress that’s so incredibly unfavourable, it has everyone on here talking. Only to then be asked about it and answer something that goes perfectly along the lines of the fake-ass empowerment message of her song. Give me a break … I haven’t seen such an obviously and desperately staged publicity stunt since that T.aT.u. drama whether they would or wouldn’t make… Read more »
It’s like the German guy singing a song that everyone will hate!
I’m not sure about that since he just isn’t much of a composer and simply doesn’t know better. And that’s the sad part: I’m sure he truly believes he wrote a decent song. Maybe he’s not even aware of how annoying his song is.
I wonder if destiny will make some changes for the second rehearsals, like using different backgrounds color, wardrobe, cmon Malta you got this. Don’t loose your opportunity
You’re just demonstrating why we have to tell artists to not read the comments.
Indeed, but your Cruella de Vil persona isn’t fooling anyone, Vanilla Bean, so do try to keep it civil.
Lest we forget, you already swore once before that you’d never return to Wiwibloggs after Romania’s 2019 NF and removed yourself.
Actually the comments section shows that it’s you who’s repeatedly engaged me directly and with a barrage of cheap and lazy insults – so if you think it’s me that needs to keep you out that says more about your own complex.
And yeah. Glenn Close is great.
And I don’t think insulting other contestants, other fans, or the website, is appropriate when you use that image of a current Eurovision 2021 participant.
Gorgeous and all the people in here bodyshaming her because of what she wears just arent comfortable with a curvy woman embracing her sexuality, i dont hear anyone complaining about albinas outfit or stefanias. I know yall only want women who look like eleni to wear something revealing.
If anyone wore that outfit I would say it was cheap looking – it’s got nothing to do with her body. She’s a class act, with a good song and incredible voice. Everything about the staging (including the outfit) is ruining every positive that is being brought to the table
You wouldn’t expect hurricane to perform in ball gowns….
This must be the worst choice of dress ever. What are the Maltese thinking?
Are either of you a qualified doctor? Did anyone consult you for a medical opinion? If either of those are true, you would know such a thing is confidential.
The pair of you should look more closely at yourselves, before commenting on the size, shape, genetics, and habits of others.
And again MAlta bying Youtube views Even Romania Roxen has more likes with twice less views lmao.
I agree with you that we should not celebrate obesity and that we should promote healthy life styles and healthy eating. However your comment also indicates that you lack knowledge about obesity. Yes most people who are obese have themselves to blame for overindulging. But not all obesity is caused by over eating. It could also be either due to genetics or medical reasons such as slow metabolism or due to the thyroid gland and/or other issues. It is the same case with people who are thin. I am blessed with a small frame and no matter what or how… Read more »
Barbara Dex award??
I don’t mind the staging from what I can see… but I really, really need those boots to be pulled up to the SAME height.
High or low, I don’t care but that is so upsetting. I can’t see anything but that when I look at the rehearsal.
She is a beautiful girl, with a great voice , and a song to match. Unfortunately, her outfit reminds me too much of Lizzo, and it shouldn’t have because it affects her originality. Go, girl! You are amazing.
This is very, VERY wrong conversation – a person’s weight/look shouldn’t be any of our concern! I SUGGEST IT STOPS HERE! Where are you Wiwibloggs-editors?
The same happens with other contestants as well. For instance, I have barely encountered any constructive criticism on Hurricane’s song. All the people ever bla bla about are the lips of some of the girls and they seem to judge them all based on their appearance. Little do they acknowledge that these women SING so damn well!
Very this. Such an arrogant judgmental conversation—no one gives a rat’s ass whether you think Destiny looks big and ugly or big and radiant. To think that people are watching her deciding whether she’s a binge-eater or not, and what kind of behaviours for her are acceptable, just beggars belief.
Really? Shallow ad hominems demonstrate a weak argument—and you do Destiny no favours as a fan by these gutter comments. The point stands that her weight should be the least interesting thing about her for us here.
And I’ll have time for ice cream when I know that Innsbruck’s Dalmatian population is safe from the Cruella de Vil persona you are cultivating.
Glad to hear that the girl is happy with herslf and her costume – but won’t get my vote this year!
I thought it was a song contest..oops?
#DestinedForGreatness
I am not a fan of most of the costumes, but I love destiny, and the song is good enough for top5 and her vocal are superb!
Sure, Jan.
Nobody is encouraging obesity. You’re missing the point. I’m sure she knows what’s best for her and she’s doing her best. She has been training, but you wouldn’t know that because you don’t follow her, and yet you feel like you’re entitled to make an uninformed judgement. She is super confident (and I LOVE THAT) while still being a big women WHILST also acknowledging she needs to improve herself. She is her own motivation AS SHE said in the press conference after her rehearsal … which obviously you did not watch.
Well, It looks like I’m gonna be “the devil”s advocate here. I feel like every single year there is this huge campaign against the favourite to win, it happened to Mans, it happened to Netta and its happening to Destiny. Granted, wiwibloggs clearly loves Malta, we know thar, but guys, the WiwiTeam has known Destiny ever since she was a girl in JESC, of course they will be a little biased, but that doesn’t affect how consistently professional they always are. I personally love the staging, it does remind me to “one touch” from this years melodifestivalen, its cool, its… Read more »
While that is true, there are multiple favourites this year. Like I think Barbara was only 1% or something behind her before the first rehearsal. I think it’ll be a close call this year.
It looks cheap. It feels cheap.
well, people in the press room said that it looked amazing, there is not only pink but also yellow and green so I would say it’s also quite dynamic, lets wait, its SJB after all, I have faith
I can understand that Lizzo is an inspiration, but trying to become a direct copy of another artist is never a good idea It would have been nice to know who her other favourites are, but it is quite obvious that she thought by mentioning another act it will give them an advantage. Destiny, like some of the other artists in this contest has a fantastic voice, but it is also good that we start discussing acts on basis of their song too, not just the voice. Finally, Good luck Malta, and all other countries taking part in this great… Read more »
That pink outfit will bring her down. She should have opted for a dress, Adele classy style…
Leave Destiny alone! 🙁
Who are you to tell others from showing there opinion?
Then everyone would’ve complained, that she isn’t dressed age-appropriately and looks like a 40-year-old again…
Yeah and then people will moan and winge that she doesnt look her age…..its catch 22
She looks amazing! You can be proud Destiny!
Whoever thought of making Destiny a European Lizzo in pink needs to be fired. Immediately
You’re only making things worse. 🙁
So basically they are not changing anything… rest in peace Malta. You’ve just blown your first win.
Sorry Destiny, you can wear the millennium stadium it doesn’t bother me because whatever you wear is not gonna grow the song any bigger than your size….this song is nothing special, bookies polls all this publicity behind you ain’t gonna save victory for your song. I prefer netta original version of your song
Out of 16 of course an article about Malta after the rehearsals.
And of course an oriented and brainwashing article telling us we will be in Malta next year WTF
she’s finally taking on the youthful outifts and dropping the 40+ look.
Back to back coverage of Destiny has only increased expectations. Is that why countries which were off the radar are surprising us?
Well… She’s still gonna keep that costume. I feel more relieved now that Destiny said it herself. If she feels confident and beautiful in it, then that’s what matters the most. She may not win cause her costume is questionable — just the colour for me, tbh — but I must accept her decision. Just go girl!! And make the most of Eurovision!
And if she wants to know it, I can tell Destiny ‘yes, you did make me feel good in my own skin watching you performing all these years, but also glad and hopeful for other big girls like me, we indeed can be beautiful and sassy on tv’. Lots of love from a 28-year-old black girl, Des!
You took the words right out of my mouth! She looks so happy on stage and that’s what counts! I think Malta still has a big chance of winning as it’s the queen Destiny herself. When I see her perform, I feel empowered and strong and that’s something very special
She can dress the way she likes and feel beautiful in it, 100% agree. But we’re also free to find other contestant stagings better.
Her interview outfit is way better than the pink one.
Well, in the contest you can’t totally dismiss what people think, because people vote for the winner
As long as Destiny feel okay with that outfit it should be okay for all of us. It seems that she knows what she wants and what she doesn’t want. Good luck princess.
Totally agree! If she’s happy with how stunning she looks (which imo she definitely should!) we should love and support her
