Estonia has its grand finalists. The second semi-final of Eesti Laul 2022 took place tonight and Estonia decided the other five acts who will head to next week’s grand final. Tonight’s five qualifiers are: Anna Sahlene, Black Velvet, Jaagup Tuisk, Stefan and Minimal Wind feat. Elisabeth Tiffany.

The format of Estonia’s Eesti Laul 2022 has been expanded expanded compared to previous years. The show began all the way back in December when 40 acts fought for 20 semi-final spots while premiering their music videos in the quarter-finals.

In tonight’s semi-final, ten acts performed their songs. The result was determined by a combination of televoting and a jury panel, which each counted for half the results. Four acts qualified from the first round, being chosen by both jury and televoting. One act additionally qualified from the second round, in which only televoters were able to choose.

From the first round of voting, the qualifiers were Anna Sahlene with “Champion”, Black Velvet with “Sandra”, Jaagup Tuisk with “Kui vaid” and Stefan with “Hope”. They were joined by the second round qualifier, Minimal Wind feat. Elisabeth Tiffany with “What to Make of This”.

Tonight’s qualifiers will head to next Saturday the grand final. There there will compete alongside the qualifiers from the first semi-final to find Estonia’s act for Eurovision 2022.

“Golden Shore” live performance was a bit irregular but Purr Mud and Shira deserved to qualify. Estonia is so irritating with these choices… Nah, go ahead and get stuck in the SF again and again.

Sadly, the vocals sounded under-pitch for around the first 100 seconds. After that, everything clicked into place, but the malfunction left a bad memory of the song. Also, for a duet, the staging was a bit too “boxed in,” and the singers were literally separated into different boxes on the TV screen at one point.

I think Eesti Laul is going to be a nice show. The final 10 songs are all well written and pleasant on the ear and for the first time in recent memory no wacky joke acts in the final! Half of these could get Estonia back to the final. Elina, Stig, Jaagup, Stefan and maybe Elysa and Anna Sahlene would all be respectable entries and I look forward to hearing who wins!

Jaagup was my winner tonight, by a clear mile. I wanted Stefan to do well; he did okay, but… he needs to enunciate the words more in the Verses, otherwise we cannot hear what he is singing about. The words of “Hope” are quite powerful, but only if we can hear them. As for Maian: That staging didn’t work I’m afraid. I’m sorry because I wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t there for me tonight. My cousin loves “Champion,” so we had a really good time with that one. It’s great seeing Anna again after so many years,… Read more »

I’m not even surprised that for another year (already a lot), Estonia chooses the most boring and outdated songs possible. Probably I have simply to accept that their delegation doesn’t want to be competitive and original. Every year they just throw the original tune. Sorry, but the overhyped Stefan’s song is so f* boring and unoriginal, simply the same as many many many other worldwide known ones, including his own other unpopular attempts previously in the same competition. Nah. Sorry not sorry. Feel the same pain for Maian as for Juri las year.

If Estonia has so boring songs, why is that your problem? u don’t like it, don’t listen to it. Sorry for u, but no one feels any pain because of Maian, she’s out and that’s it

Really sorry Estonia fans, I can’t honestly say that any of these songs really interest me very much. The best word I would use to describe them is “average”. Not bad, but certainly not eye-catching. I don’t see a final qualifier in any of these songs unfortunately.

For a moment I thought I was gonna lose it if Maian didn’t make it to the final, but I kinda expected it and tbh her staging was a mess!
Now idc who Estonia chooses (though at this point I wouldn’t be mad if Stefan won, his entry’s the best among the big names Estonians seem to be drawn to), all of my favorite entries are gone, but EL needs a revamp.
ps: press F for Maian and Shira

Jaagup has been one of my favorites since the songs were released and his performance tonight was outstanding, musically and visually. Stefan nailed his vocals as usual and the western theme was played just under the right amount. I believe both would do well in Turin. My third option would be Elina, trusting her team will make everything work in the final.

Sad for Maian, my other favorite song in Eesti Laul. But as others already pointed here, Estonia rarely votes for more modern things, so I was already expecting to be disappointed.

The camera work for Kui Vaid was really interesting but they went overboard and in the end it looked messy and like a 12 yo was behind it. It could have been super impactful…

My top 5 from the second semi-final all went throught, so I am pleased. This is going to be the best Eesti Laul final ever, not a single song I don’t like and the weakest for me in the final is Sahlene 😀

Maybe an unpopular opinion(? but it feels quite odd for me to try to represent a country and not even know how to speak said country language, so I would switch Anna with Jyrise or Maian.
All rant aside, I hope Jaagup wins like he should have back in 2020.

Estonia has a long history choosing foreigners. After all most Estonians speak English well and their own language can be difficult for English speakers to pick up. Anna represented them in 2002 on home turf after one half of their winning act in 2001 was from Aruba. Then remember also the swedish Victor Crone from 2019.

As an estonian I’m so disappointed. My qualifiers would’ve been stefan, anna sahlene, jaagup, maian and púr mudd. Black Velvet only got to the final because of middle-aged men in estonia voted for them. Minimal wind was great but lets be honest- it will not do well at eurovision so why have it in the finals. Golden Shores was such a grower for me and I really wanted them to qualify. I didn’t really like Meeletu at first but it was also a grower for me. It was inetrnational fans favourite but I sort of accepted that she will not… Read more »

Welp, both Meeletu and Golden Shores are out. Granted, they weren’t too strong vocally but they were the most current songs in this selection by a mile. My heart especially aches for Maian, but at least she’ll have a place in my Spotify playlist. I think Stefan is gonna win this selection, and I’m gonna be satisfied with that. He’s my favourite of all the finalists, and my third place overall.

I don’t understand why Estonian public reject the songs with the highest streams and the most modern ones aka Meeletu and Golden Shores. Does it have something to do with the age of people watching? Only that would explain how Black Velvet qualified over them.

The songs like Meeletu and Golden Shores just don’t appeal to a larger demographic. Mostly because they are not catchy enough. And lackluster performace by Shira and Pur Mudd…

doubtful. im 30 and i dont know anybody who actually votes besides my mom who is older than your estimation by quite a bit. And she is a big eurofan, most her age dont vote either. Most voters are probably under 20. that also explains why the “big” names always do so well. teens are very biased to their favourites. black velvet did well because its a known band and the song and tune is very estonian. its the kind of music you hear at local parties (weddings, birthdays, anything with alcohol etc). it wasnt voted in cause people think… Read more »

Well most of my friends who are under 20 don’t vote either. If they would’ve voted then Meeletu would have probably qualified instead of Black Velvet. Meeletu is most streamed on spotify and popular amongst younger generations, yet it didn’t do well.

Expected everyone except ‘What to make of this’. Shocker IMO considering it didn’t even perform live. I’m disappointed Maian didn’t qualify but I’m also very happy for Jaagup since he was my favourite from day 1 and his performance increased his chances. Stefan too!

That musical group was popular in the 90s early 00s. So yes. They have that nostalgy factor and are known names. Also let’s face it – the song was catchy unlike most in this semi!

Black Velvet is a legendary band in Estonia, their songs “17” and “Kingitus” are songs that almost everybody know. They have been active over 20 years. And I knew estonians will vote for them. The song is catchy, not like Maian that was soooo bland and for some reason foreign eurovision fans like.
