After months of speculation, Austria has finally confirmed their act for Eurovision 2022. The DJ and producer LUM!X will head to Turin with his song “Halo”. The news was confirmed this morning on Hitradio Ö3.

LUM!X will be joined by the singer Pia Maria. But While the performers were confirmed today, it will be a few more weeks before fans will get to hear his song for Eurovision 2022. The song will be released in mid-March.

“Halo” is said to be an electro-pop song, hearkening back to a late ’80s/early ’90s sound. It has been compared to Bonnie Tyler’s ’80s hit “Holding Out For a Hero”.

LUM!X already has a connection to the host country of Eurovision 2022. His mother is Italian and he has previously lived in host city Turin. LUM!X currently lives in Milan. He expressed his enthusiasm for the song contest, saying “The ESC is simply the greatest thing you can do in Europe.”

Pia Maria also shared her excitement, saying, “I’ve always watched the Song Contest and think that the ESC is a really cool event. My motto: grab it and make something out of it!”

Listen to LUM!X’s 2019 hit single “Monster”

Who is Austria’s Eurovision 2022 act LUM!X and Pia Maria?

LUM!X, full name Luca Michlmayr, is only 20 years old, but the young DJ has already achieved a lot. His songs have racked up over 1 billion streams, making him one of the fastest-rising stars in the dance and electronic scene. LUM!X’s biggest hit to date is “Monster”, which has already been certified 4x platinum and 7x gold.

He currently has over 10.5 million monthly listens on Spotify. He is currently Spotify’s 475th most popular artist in the world, making him Spotify’s most popular Eurovision 2022 artist so far. His biggest Spotify audiences come from Amsterdam, Paris, Oslo, Rotterdam and Hamburg — making his international popularity a good choice for a European song contest.

Pia Maria is an 18-year-old singer who works as a make-up artist. Eurovision 2022 marks Pia Maria’s first big gig.

Austria has internally selected its act since 2017. The country last qualified for the Eurovision grand final in 2018, when Cesár Sampson finished third with his song “Nobody But You”. Austria is due to compete in the second half of the first semi-final in Eurovision 2022.

What do you think? Are you excited by Austria’s pick for Eurovision 2022? Can LUM!X take Austria to the grand final? Share your thoughts below!

I hope he knows what he is doing for picking Pia Maria??? an inexperienced artist?

Anyway, i think the song will be strong so it’s up to Pia Maria’s vocals (remember BG 2008, Poland 2018?) and the staging.

Lum!x is well know as a Dj, but who is Pia Maria…. she works as a make up artists…. but we find no participation in any event…. or from any live performance… or any shazam file…. maybe she only sang in front of family and her make up-mirror ? Austria d be good advised -. to send a real “voice bomb”

I guess the DJ wouldn’t have selected her if she couldn’t hit the notes…

The only time so far, let’s hope LUM!X pulls a JOWST in Turin this year, so the stigma goes away 🙂

It’s nice to see a lot of young people being intrested in ESC and participating in it. Hope they have a great song!

I hope Pia Maria has the nerves and confidence to pull off that massive task seeing how she hasn’t had any gigs!
But it is a good choice and sounds more intriguing than recent Austrian choices! Good luck

80s retro pop?

Surprised that genre is having something of a moment at ESC right now.
If done well, it’s a genre that I really enjoy. I love that Stranger Things or early Calvin Harris 80s synth pop style.
If done badly though, it can be incredibly cringey (Poland 2021).

i’m really hyped for this. a 20 year old dj with a 18 year old vocalist will surely know to bring a song that sounds fresh and cool.

I’d say it’s already over again. As so often, Eurovision is too late on that.

that trend is far from dead and if the song is very good, it does not matter.

If she wanted to sound fresh and cool she would have sounded like Olivia Rodrigo or Gayle. That kind of teen-punk is the sound right now. But as usual I expect ESC to pick up on that next year, when it’s already passed.

Yep, usually supposed trends are already uncool again by the time Eurovision touches them. It’s actually even quite a good measurement to go by.

Bulgaria’s VICTORIA was called a Billie Eilish wannabe, yet she flopped in televoting so going for what’s cool and trendy does not always help my dear.

Electronic DJ songs are catchy and internationally succesful , also LUMIX has a lot of digital streams as this kind of songs are loved by many people..
We already have another electronic music from Czech Republic , this kind of songs are maybe ideal for 2015 but we never know , they can be successful

I absolutely HATED “Monster” and switched to another station every time it played. So not having big hopes. And what is he gonna do on stage? Pretend to DJ?

Probably. Everyone who ever stood on a Eurovision stage starting 1999 or so and who wasn’t a singer or dancer played pretend.

A dj on a tv show always pretends. Most of the time their mixer isn’t even connected.

Gromee’s snake dance was the highlight of 2018 and I am willing to die on that hill:) There’s also “DJ, Take Me Away” which used every gimmick 2008 had to offer (the decks were ON FIRE)… These two seem too young/credible and the Austrian delegation too smart for such antics, though. Looking forward to the song.

Oh dear, let’s hope she has the confidence to perform in front of an audience as big as ESC, otherwise it could be a real car-crash!

Great! Both choices would be great in any case. The thing that is less great and I had forgotten is that Austria is part of the club of countries who always wait the last minute to reveal their entry, the mid march club, and for this fact I’m not a fan of this club because they make us wait uselessly each years and it’s always the same… The day they will understand that it’s not even productive or useless to do that, because in fact they reveal their acts all almost at the same time if it’s not the same… Read more »
