Just a week ago, Mae Muller was announced as the United Kingdom’s representative for Eurovision 2023 with “I Wrote A Song”. In the days since, the UK have had her song on loop. So much so that the single has reached #30 on the UK chart.
This is the first time in over a decade that a British Eurovision entry has climbed into the UK Top 40 Singles Chart within its first week of release. You have to go all the way back to 2011 for the last time this happened, when Blue dropped their entry “I Can”.
The achievement also marks Mae’s first solo Top 40 chart hit. She previously entered the UK chart at #32 with Neiked and Polo G for the collaboration “Better Days”.

It’s safe to say that Mae was extremely happy to hear the news. Taking to her Instagram account, she thanked fans:
“this means so much to me, thank you to everyone who has supported me and this song so far❤️ it’s also my first top 40 as a solo artist so feeling proud for a lot of reasons rn and it couldn’t be done without you guys! only the beginning!!! SCREAMINNNNG CRYING THROWING UP ❤️”
The early chart placement gets Mae’s Eurovision campaign off to a great start. It shows the UK is very much behind her and that the nation is ready to cheer her on when she performs in Liverpool this May.
Mae co-wrote “I Wrote A Song” alongside Brit-nominated songwriter Lewis Thompson and Karen Poole. The 25-year-old Londoner describes the song as a summertime empowering pop anthem about resilience and sisterhood. On TikTok, Mae wrote:
“This song is for the girlies that went through heartache, hurt or pain and came out of the other side, who persevered and came out stronger, who took the high road and chose to love themselves.
“Crying at home? Absolutely not. Spend the night at home? It’s a no from me. […] It’s giving growth. It’s giving empowerment. It’s giving liberation”.

Really disappointed to hear the radio edit on Radio 2. They dropped the dramatic orchestral intro which I love as it makes you sit up and take notice, they also dropped the spoken lyrics before the refrain, I’m not normally a fan of that kind of thing but it gives the whole song more character. The song is worse if for these changes
but the eurovision version will include that and the spoken lyric, so that I comes in at 3min. It will, feature in the live version
Yea I guess so. I just never understand why the radio cuts it down more when under three minutes is pretty short these days for a record, I want everyone to enjoy it as it is
Happy to see the hype people in the United Kingdom seem to be feeling!
It was clearly written to be a radio banger, so this is not surprising.
That’s very good for BBC in the buildup for Liverpool. “I wrote a song” is a typical UK chart song and I can see now what their intention was in selecting it and I have to admit it’s smart. I don’t know how it will perform in May, and tbh I’m prepared for the worst, but having chart success before the contest is probably the best way to keep the interest in the UK high. Good luck Mae!
I’m glad the UK is finally looking at the Eurovision Song Contest more seriously once again. But really, what’s so shocking about a charting song in the home country? Better write articles about songs that cross bridges.
The only thing here is that the home country is the UK, and no British ESC act had made it to the top 40 (if they managed to chart at all) in ages, until Sam Ryder made it to #2 last year
Hopefully can bear Sam’s number 2 come Eurovision n… in the charts at the very least!
It was #1 over As It Was for a week, if I remember correctly!
Well deserved. Now the radio stations need to keep supporting this song all the way to Eurovision
I’m so happy for her!
Well, good for her. But … why? I swear I can read James Newman’s mind right now – and he’s thinking „are you f***ing kidding me?“
I think his mind must be in a dream state
So pleased for Mae. She wrote a great song and deserves her success!
It’s almost as if the UK’s entry is the type of music that charts in the UK “shocker”
Ah no but for real, happy to see it charting (surprised Sam didnt) hopefully itll climb up in the next few weeks.
Space Man got #2…just behind the mega hit Harry Styles’s “As it Was”
Wow. Great start to the Eurovision journey for Mae.
Blue peaked at No 16 in the UK chart. I wonder if Mae can go higher than that…
BTW She is jewish… thats why she is love Noa Kirel.. I love ESC friendships… 🙂
Well, Shabbat shalom to the both of them. Yes, St. Patrick’s Day, and shabbat on the same day this year
And Sam Ryder didn’t? That’s a shocker. So happy for her!
I think he only charted in the top 40 a week before the contest. Not in its first week like Mae.
Sam did however hit #2 after the contest which is the highest a Eurovision song has been in decades.
