Israel’s Eurovision 2024 delegation has accused fellow delegations of “an unprecedented display of hatred.” In a statement sent to BBC News, a spokesperson from Israel’s broadcaster KAN said their experience was marred by anti-Israeli behaviour from other participants.

“This year, the Israeli delegation faced immense pressure and an unprecedented display of hatred, notably from other delegations and artists, publicly and collectively, solely because of the simple fact that we are Israelis and that we were there,” it said.

“However, throughout the journey, the delegation maintained a dignified and respectful approach towards artists and other delegations, striving to foster unity around music while adhering to the competition’s rules, unlike some other delegations.”

Israel’s Eurovision delegation accuses artists of “hatred”

The statement from the Israeli broadcaster comes days after other delegations publicly complained about the behaviour of the Israeli delegation.

Magnus Børmark, the guitarist for the Norwegian band Gåte, criticised the security arrangements for Israel, saying that they didn’t always feel peaceful.

“It seemed as if there was one set of rules for Israel, another for the rest,” Magnus said. “There is something wrong when you experience it. The artists should not have to have a crisis meeting with the EBU.”

We still don’t know what was discussed at that crisis meeting. But we do know that the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS lodged a complaint with the EBU about an “unsafe environment” prior to their act being disqualified. They did not say which country or officials fostered that environment.

The Dutch team also accused Israel’s delegation of filming them and sharing clips online without their permission.

In one widely circulated video, an Israeli news anchor is seen filming members of the Dutch team even after a security guard asks him to stop.

On Monday, in their first statement since the conclusion of this year’s event, the EBU confirmed that it’s going to reflect on the ongoing crisis and that the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group will evaluate individual cases. The EBU said:

“We regret that some delegations at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Malmö didn’t respect the spirit of the rules and the competition both onsite and during their broadcasts.

“We spoke to a number of delegations during the event regarding various issues that were brought to our attention.”

“The EBU’s governing bodies will, together with the heads of delegations, review the events surrounding the ESC in Malmö to move forward in a positive way and to ensure the values of the event are respected by everyone.

“Individual cases will be discussed by the event’s governing body, the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group made up of representatives from participating broadcasters, at its next meeting.”

Separate to questions regarding the behaviour of delegations, the Dutch broadcaster and representatives from RTP — the Portuguese broadcaster — have taken issue with the EBU’s use of fake applause when hiding the booing of the Israeli contestant. They say this distorts reality.

Nicolau Santos from RTP said: “For an organization like the EBU, and for an organization like RTP and the European public media service whose flag is the fight against fake news, misinformation, and information manipulation, it is unacceptable that this is possible. Using this method distorts reality.”

Israël should have stayed home and enjoy their own home entertainment this year. All these negatives problems could’ve been avoided. There’s already a lot of negative’s comments going on before they participate with their entry. Is not that their not being warned. They insisted, so they have to accept all the consequences . Don’t complain when fans don’t support their entry and don’t play a victim here

Radical Zionism, such as that pushed by Ben Gver and Bibi places Zionism above everyone else, it’s also expansionist and isn’t happy with what it already has, it wants more, even if that land belongs to someone else. I don’t think anyone here is Anti-Zionist or Anti-Israel. However they are against the absolute sh!t sprouted by the guys I listed above, the superiority complex and their actions towards the people of Palestine. Sure, Zionism is the opinion that Jews should have a state, but like in everything, and every national ideology, it is open to radicalism, and facism, and that… Read more »

The jury boycotted Israel and Ukraine and gave few points to Croatia. All this because they wanted Metler to win. The result should be canceled because the competition rules were broken. Wiwibloggs should write about the violation of the competition rules and the open boycott of Israel and Ukraine by the jury. Please cancell the rigged result

Israel was only second in the odds after Italy revealed the televote early. Spurning people on to start betting on it. It was an easy bet. Doesn’t mean anything in the slightest.

In any other year, and any other country, Eden would have finished mid table at best, 10-15.

It’s Mettler, and they go by the name Nemo

But anyway, as you know, televote isn’t the total vote, it’s only half. When televote and jury vote where combined, as per the rules of deciding a winner at Eurovision, Nemo, had the most, and as the winner is decided by who has the most points overall, NEMO was the winner of Eurovision, as they had the most points at the end of the process.

You dont know what I’m talking about. I say that the jury boycotted Israel and Ukraine and gave such an advantage to Mettler that peoples voring cant overtake him. It wasn’t a half-and-half vote of the jury and people, it was just the jury’s decision that Metler won . And people should also have the power to decide. Moreover, no country should be boycotted because of politics. That’s why I consider the result to be false – people’s votes did not count and Israel was boycotted. I am sorry but the professional jury is there to award original songs, concepts that differ and reward the stuff that the unprofessionals (the casual tv-viewers do not appreciate). My this criterias the Israelis song is a generic ballad about love in the English language. There is no way that the song is good enough, based on criterias to deserve a top 10 with juries. At the end Israel should have won.

Eden and her team got through Eurovision graciously despite all the bullying and security threats, respect for that. EBU seriously needs to deal with Eurovision being used as a platform for antisemitism, as well as any political statements and gestures.

The funny thing is that all these people achieved was a great result for Israel, despite a very obvious jury bias. It’s good to see Europe standing up against the hate.

Nothing to do with anti-semitism for the vast majority of people critical of Israel’s part in the war with Palestine. Israel has been a welcome contender for most of recent history. What is different this year? Has there been a shift in Jewish doctrine? No, I believe not. To me it’s about the actions of the Israeli government, the Israeli delegation not doing anything to distance themselves from that (in the contrary I’d say), and now the misbehaviour of the delegation. Their foreign ministry was involved in their participation so don’t tell me we should seperate song and politics. Herzog himself pushed for a participation. And their preselection was full of politics. If they want to participate despite all this they shouldn’t wonder why no one wants to take pictures with them.

I mean… the hate was very obvious here. No one showed them any form of support. People mixed them up with Netanyahu’s government and blame all of his horrible actions on Eden. So they’re right to complain. On the other, we can’t deny some them acted like *ssh*les towards the other delegations

Of course, they’re playing the victim again. We literally saw what the bullies themselves posted on social media.

How about they start wondering why people hate them? This didn’t just come out of nowhere.

when they’ve been doing it since the beginning of eurovision, then it’s out of nowhere. Many of the artists have been openly pro Palestine, and have distanced themselves from Israel from the start. Eden is from Israel and therefore she has been collectively treated differently by those artist and they have distanced themselves from her. Eden is not the government of Israel

Once again a massive downvoting campaign seems to be taking place. I suggest to the wiwi team to implement a like/dislike feature for the comments instead of the upvote downvote one. Being able to see how many likes+dislikes a comment has will also make it clear if bots have been voting

Atp if I get lots of downvotes from Israeli bots, that means I made a good point. I really stopped caring about them.

In 1980, 1984 and 1997, Israel could not compete due to the contest date clashing with a remembrance day. Might be a good idea to schedule the 2025 grand final on the same date as an Israeli holiday (if possible.) That way, Israel won’t be able to compete but they won’t have been disqualified. If the dates work, sounds like an easy solution.

Or or orrr crazy theory but…

The EBU could just grow balls and DQ them. Why is everyone so scared? Jeez

It’s very, very clear now that the EBU is completely toothless. Kan could issue a statement tomorrow saying they rigged the televote and showing how they did it but the EBU will just issue a statement saying “there isn’t enough evidence to take any action.”

Oh, and the EBU is scared of being accused of anti-Semitism if they DQ Israel, plus Germany has said they will go if Israel is ever DQ’ed.

Let Germany go. The contest would be fine. We shouldn’t be all held to rand some due to someone else’s generational guilt.

If the ICC and UN condemn Israel of war crimes then the EBU literally has no leg to stand on they would have to ban them and surely if enough broadcasters threaten to withdraw then they will have no choice.

Well, it’s not because it is Israel or you are Jewish, its because KAN is representing a country who is massacring and deplacing innocents out of their land. The mainstream would have done the same to any other country, whatever its name would be (the same applies for Russia). KANs participation would awaken political reactions no matter if a music contest, and that’s why it was an error by KAN and EBU allowing them to participate.

I have been to the West Bank a couple of times. You see the same behavior by Israeli settlers there—bullying Palestinians, provoking anger, filming the reactions, and then playing the victim once they snap. This typical Israeli behavior was also evident in Sweden. In the West Bank, these settlers get support from the army, and in Sweden, they got backing from the EBU.

Same. I was in Hebron for a few months last year.
I seen it all. Settlers videoing Palestinians sitting under a tree in the sun and shouting abuse at them, in the hope that they’d retaliate and start something. Among other things. It was truely eye opening, and I encourage anyone, especially the usual suspects here pushing a particular narrative, to go and experience it for themselves.

Indeed! The worst aspect of this situation is the system of apartheid. Illegal Israeli settlers can easily go in and out of the West Banks, while Palestinians cannot. There are separate roads designated by licence plate color: yellow for Israelis and white for Palestinians! For Palestinians, it is almost impossible to travel from one place to another within tgeir own territorurs because the roads for white licence plates don’t connect. Insane! The Norwegian ESC delegation’s comments about “one set of rules for Israelis, and another for everyone else really reminds me of this apartheid system the Israelis have set up… Read more »

Exactly! I remember it all. I was in the old town, I got talking to a shop keeper there, nice guy, offered me coffee, I was only in looking at the stuff in his store, he told me about the guy on the roof across, I looked over and saw this civilian on the roof with a gun over his shoulder, the man said the guy was a settler but he’s been intimidating him for weeks and one night just fired shots at his store. Not long after I left and came back to Ireland, the guys store was burned… Read more »

I mean, the commentary team for KAN were inciting hatred by the comments they made about Bambie.
Making comments about their identity and saying “they don’t like Israel”- is that not inciting hatred and division by basically telling the Israeli public at home not to vote for Ireland?

In addition, the videos that are all over X showing their delagation and journalists openly antagonising others.

Takes balls to cry victim when you are also a perpetrator.

Let them complain, only looks like a delayed reaction to everyone else’s complaints which where submitted earlier.

I wonder if they have complained to the EBU too or is this just an exercise of complaining to the media for their propaganda machine?

More like a propaganda piece for the domestic audience.
“Look how much we where hated, this country hates us, that country hates us, we came in peace but where bullied but we triumphed” etc etc

If they where serious, they would have said so earlier, but the pressure from other broadcasters is mounting
