The rumours were true! Spain’s RTVE has today released the official details of the country’s national selection for Eurovision 2017 and they are going for a bigger format but keeping the name: Objetivo Eurovisión.
The broadcaster has opened the submission period and will accept entries until November 27. This is the first step towards a national final which will take place in February.
This year’s selection is a bit more complicated, so let’s dig into it.
Producers welcome entries from anyone who holds Spanish nationality or has legal residency in Spain.
This restriction only applies to the artists, apparently, as there’s no reference to the composers or producers. Also, any artist entering Spain’s selection is forbidden from participating in another country’s Eurovision selection. No two-timing!

Once this period is finished, on November 27, the broadcaster will select the 30 best songs, and will open online voting. That vote will pick 10 artists. Afterwards, a professional jury will narrow the semi-finalists to three finalists.
The three finalists of this open selection will fight for a place in the national final. This will be through an online show in January, in which the readers of RTVE.es inside Spain will vote for their favourite.
As of now, we don’t know anything about how many artists will compete in the actual Objetivo Eurovisión show. The selection rules only mention that the winner of the online procedure will join the “young artists pre-selected internally” in the final.
The names of the “invited” artists will be announced at the end of the online show. This is in order to make sure that the artists “compete with the same possibilities”.
Objetivo Eurovisión: Spain’s long awaited selection method
Fortunately, the opening of the Spanish process for Eurovision 2017 comes way earlier than in recent years, and with a much more complete format.
After accusations of improvisation in the most recent processes (2014, 2016), the broadcaster has opted for a much longer and wider selection method. Do you know what this means? We’ll have Eurodrama for months! And you know how much we love that.
This must be music to the ears of the panoply of artists willing to represent Spain at this year’s Eurovision. So far we’ve heard from Mirela, Lorena Gómez, Ruth Lorenzo, María Villalón, Verónica Romero, Azúcar Moreno and Las Bistecs amongst others.
Are you happy that Spain is going big this year? What do you expect from this new method? Who do you want to enter? Share your feelings below!
I’m not sure why but this web site is loading incredibly slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

Let’s the drama begin!!! I love this

I don’t really have high expectations on something coming from RTVE. They will end up doing something cheap and tacky but at least it’s going to be fun.
I look forward to seeing the whole contestant selection procces.
Hmm… I’m not sure this could work, but as a Spaniard I’m glad RTVE has started planning Eurovision much earlier than other years 🙂
I guess I’ll give Objetivo Eurovisión another shot.
Amateur Wildcards options are always a bad decision as they hijack a sympathy vote. Just look at Germany in 2014 & 15 when the amateur wildcard ending up winning over established popular artists.
Brequette or bust
Great that they’re giving the public a vote in selecting one of the finalists!
First of all, I must admit that I’m impressed by how much detail RTVE has prepared the selection for 2017. They’re revamping the whole thing, and that’s good. I pray and wish they find the right artist and SONG for 2017!
