Allora! After a long wait, the host city of Eurovision 2022 has finally been confirmed. The EBU today announced that the 2022 edition of the song contest will be hosted in the northern Italy city of Turin. The grand final of Eurovision 2022 has been confirmed for 14 May 2022.
Turin — known in Italian as Torino — is the capital of the Piedmont region. It is located near the Swiss and French borders and is an important business and cultural centre in northern Italy.
The city’s host venue is the Pala Alpitour arena (formerly known as the PalaOlimpico), which boasts more than 13,000 seats and a height of 18 meters.
Eurovision Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl was enthusiastic about the choice of host city, saying:
‘Turin is the perfect Host City for the 66th Eurovision Song Contest.
“As we saw during the 2006 Winter Olympics, PalaOlimpico exceeds all the requirements needed to stage a global event of this scale and we have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment from the City of Turin who will welcome thousands of fans next May.
“This will be the first Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Italy in 30 years and, together with our Host broadcaster Rai, we are determined to make it a special one.”
The grand final will be held on Saturday 14 May 2022, with the semi-finals on Tuesday 10 and Thursday 12 May.
Turin previously pitched the hosting with a glossy promotional video that celebrated Torino’s place in Italy’s cultural and commercial history. Turin will be the third Italian city to host the Eurovision Song Contest, following Naples (1965) and Rome (1991).

The Eurovision 2022 host city selection process
The announcement of the Eurovision 2022 host city has taken a little longer than usual, leaving some fans feeling anxious. But with today’s announcement, it’s clear that the announcement has been made with plenty of time for Eurovision 2022 planning to get underway.
The host city selection process began earlier in the year, with 17 Italian cities expressing an interest in hosting the 2022 edition of the song contest. From that, 11 cities went ahead and formerly applied.
From that, the potential cities were reportedly narrowed down to five likely candidates. The cities were visited and inspected to gauge their suitability as potential host cities.
While it was expected that the host city announcement would be released in September, nothing was heard and it seemed that the process was shrouded in mystery. However, Italian fans noted that many Italian municipalities were undergoing their local elections, so it made sense that the final decision and announcement would be made after the elections.
And the early October announcement isn’t the latest a host city has been revealed. In 2010, German broadcaster NDR confirmed on 12 October that Düsseldorf would be the host city of Eurovision 2011.

RAI confirmed the two (not three) multicam directors of the show will be Duccio Forzano and Christian Biondani. Duccio has directed Sanremo 6 times. In Sanremo 2018 and 2019 he has introduced Cue Pilot for the first time in a RAI TV Production. Christian Biondani has been one of the directors of MTV EMA 2011, then he directed JESC 2014 in Malta and JESC 2015 in Bulgaria. They are the top of musical tv productions directors in Italy. Now that we finally have a whole city and dates, The next information me to know is how many countries will participate in 2022. I’m hoping it’ll be 40 if Armenia returns and nobody else withdraws. The next stage of probably be the logo and slogan, but I could come later.
Has the UK announced their intention to complete/withdraw from Eurovision 2022 yet. I want them in but, only a few days until the 11th deadline and I’m a tiny bit nervous now.

I don’t think any member of the big 5 can realistically withdraw lest they risk a permanent ban.
Italy withdrew for 13 years, but that was before the big four protection status was created. I don’t think the EBU wants any big five member to leave. It would be a financial and ratings disaster
There’s no way that could even be remotely true, I don’t even understand how you could think that. They are not being held hostage by their own broadcasting union.
Not officially but there must be some form of de facto pressure given how automatic qualification and funding ratios work. If they were to return after withdrawing they’d probably lose their guaranteed spot in the final.
UK and Russia are usually the last countries to confirm participation so no need to worry. I think they just like to wait to the last day…

I understand Eurovision takes place in the evening through the night, but it’s time the sub-logo became a little different from the fold (well, Lisbon 2018 did it.). It was either Turin or Milan and my bet was Turin because it is less known to the broad public. Winning over the capital of fashion must feel great. Yay!
Ok my choice would have been Milan for some private reasons or Bologna for the symbol, but Turin is not a bad choice and it represents another symbol being so near to France and Switzerland, the runner up and the 3rd of this esc year, even nearer to them than the italian capital. I guess it will have many french and swiss eurofans in the audience this year, more than usual. Congrats to Torino and the Piemonte region! Never been there, but heard great things about the city. It’s crazy, but the simple announcement of the host city and the confirmed dates makes it feel like the event is just by the corner.
Finally we have some some information, although the venue is a bit of a disappointment. I guess no country has the possibility to invest in Eurovision like Azerbaijan did in 2012 with a megasize arena! Haha, but we can’t blame if some countries aren’t as wealthy as them.

Azerbaijan did not have a proper arena. Italy has. You do not need a megasize arena for a great show.

They probably decided weeks ago but waited until after the local elections to announce it, Rai wouldn’t want to be accused of trying to sway the elections by announcing the host city just a couple of weeks before them

Kiev is the transliteration of the Russian name for the city, not the English name. ESC 2005 was billed as Kyiv 2005 as well so it didn’t just arise out of Crimea.
The show will be hosted in English, and the English name (and to be fair, Piedmontese too) of the city is Turin. I don’t see why they should name it otherwise since Torino sounds so odd when everything else is in English.

30 years ago. Exactly. Stop this refrain. In 1991, the show was moved at the last minute from Sanremo to Rome for safety reasons, due to the Gulf War. Yes, the hosts were not professional presenters and they were bad, but EBU just didn’t like the show was presented in Italian. I think eurovision 2022 will be better run than 1991.
Don’t think so, 1991 was a real live orchestra and backsingers. 2022 will just be a half playback show like 2021.

The 1991 contest actually did play during one of the year vision again events last year, so they might’ve seen it. I was only a mere baby when that contest happened

As a cycling fan, the outskirts of Turin (Venaria Reale, Pragelato, Sestriere and Bardonecchia) played host to the 19th stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2018, which set the scene for one of the most epic solo attacks I’ve ever witnessed! I also enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics in 2006, I’m looking forward to ESC 2022

I think is the first time when we have 3 consecutive non-capital cities hosting Eurovision.
First time since the first four contests (Lugano, Frankfurt, Hilversum, and Cannes).
Hmm. Isn’t Tel Aviv a de facto capital since most embassies are based there?
Tel Aviv is to Israel like how Birmingham is to the UK, or how Sochi is to Russia. It’s more of a second city rather than a de jure or de facto Capital. But, given the dispute of Jerusalem in diplomatic, political and economic practices, Tel Aviv is and is not a Capital city. It is a very grey moral area.
A capital is the city where the government is based (at least executive, but also legislative and judicial in most cases). Israel’s government (all three branches) are based in Jerusalem so it’s the capital, but due to the status of East Jerusalem, most countries prefer to have their embassies in Tel Aviv.
So not for The Netherlands where the government is based in The Hague and the capital is Amsterdam.
The capital is the city that has been declared to be the capital by a country.
But we might be a bit strange, as the city where our national broadcaster is based, is not like in all other countries the capital,, but Hilversum.
Turin is also the fourth first time host city in a row, Start from Lisbon, Tel Aviv, and Rotterdam

We all kind of knew it would be Turin. But still, awesome looking city and much often overlooked in favour of Milan and Rome and Venice etc, so a perfect opportunity to show it off.

I guess that if any among the smaller or less populated countries wins next, the event is bound to take place in a capital, as most other cities are less likely to have a needed venue. For example, if Croatia wins, I am 95% sure that the event would be held in Zagreb.
If, however, the UK, Germany, France, Russia, ect. wins next, then it’s just as plausible that a non-capital would host it again.
I wouldn’t count out Split, Rijeka or Dubrovnik.
I am from Rijeka, and we have only two indoor halls which could even remotely serve as venues: Dvorana Mladosti and Sportska dvorana Zamet. First of whom has the capacity of just under 4000 people, and the second one a bit over 2300. For Rijeka to be chosen, EBU would have to agree that only the delegations, the press, closest friends and family, and perhaps a few chosen fans are able to attend in person. The contest has been in Germany three times, but never Berlin. I’d like to see them get a turn. Cardiff or Nice would be nice, though.
Well, Berlin was the capital of East Germany, so pre-unification Germany wouldn’t have been able to host Eurovision there because it was West Germany who participated between 1956 and 1990. 1991 was the first year a united Germany competed at the contest.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking of – there were reasons for it not being in Berlin, and a contest held there today would be a celebration of those reasons no longer existing. The Mercedes Benz Arena is even located at a still standing part of the Berlin Wall.

France has the second biggest indoor arena of the world nearby Paris with a capacity of 40 000 persons, it would miss the opportunity to get the biggest esc ever in case of a french victory but yes they have other good arenas too in another cities, Cannes ‘s arena is too small.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Berlin is an emergency host location for when a country can’t host and so it’s never in the running for when Germany itself gets to host after winning.
I’m unfamiliar with this, as it never happened in the 21st century, but if the winner is unable / unwilling to host, shouldn’t runner-up have the next refusal rights?
Lmao why are some people so mad and disappointed. The shows will take place indoors anyways. 99% of the audience will not even see the city. I’m just glad it’s a nice size arena, and not some conference center. Can’t wait to see it in action!

Because many aren’t vaccinated (or won’t do so). Besides, you can still get the virus even if you’re vaccinated (though the odds are much lower than an unvaccinated person).

In Turin there is the most wellknown Egyptian Museum outside Egypt. There is a wonderful Cinema Museum in the Mole Antonelliana. Remember Turin has been the capital of the Italian Kingdom before it was moved to Rome. There is the Royal Palace. Etc. So probably you and Bird Lover will not come to Italy. Liisa, the reason of the delay was not for the influence on the voters, but the fact the new mayor should have confirmed the committments taken by the previous mayor in terms of co-funding of the event. The previous mayor, Chiara Appendino, from the 5 Star Movement, was absolutely in favour to host the event and she allocated a budget of 7Mln euros. The new mayor (there will be the second round next weekend between two new candidates) should confirm this commitment. Well in Rotterdam 2020 we had the first batch of tickets on the 12th of december and the stage concept was announced the 2nd of December. Since the venue announcement is a bit later I also expect the stage design and ticket sales to be a bit later.
