It’s just two weeks since her untimely exit from Eurovision 2022 during the second semi-final. But Ireland’s Brooke Scullion isn’t resting on her laurels as she drops her follow-up single to “That’s Rich”. “Tongues” will be available to stream and download on all major music platforms from Friday 27 May.
Brooke “Tongues” (new single)
Brooke already holds the title of robbed queen after Turin. Now, with the release of “Tongues”, she can add versatile queen to the list. The track retains elements of the Derry girl’s signature electro sound and cool vibes. But, otherwise, it’s a complete switch in direction from her The Late Late Show conquering hit.
Whereas “That’s Rich” was an unrelenting sassy pop banger, “Tongues” is more reflective and chilled. It’s a mostly mid-tempo effort that relies heavily on electronic trickery. There’s also a lyrical switch. At Eurovision she was done with her fool of an ex, now she sings of a love that’s almost celestial.
In a statement sent to wiwibloggs, Brooke tells us more about the song. “Tongues is a very personal song for me, it’s about a love language, so called speaking in Tongues. It captures the moment when people talk to God in their own language, their own way, so only they can understand it. Therefore it’s very personal. If we can speak in Tongues we can speak in a love language with each other that only the two of us will understand.” Described as a summer-ready dance-pop anthem, it is written by Brooke herself along with LAWRENT and Christopher Markey.
Listen on Spotify, Apple Music and Soundcloud.
“Tongues” lyrics — Brooke (Ireland Eurovision 2022 new single)
Your love takes me higher
I think I think I’ve found my ways
Your body is closer to mine than it’s ever been
Your eyes, your lips
I’m trying to keep myself from falling
Your hands all over me
Can’t hold my breath
I need to come up for air now
We can speak in tongues, tongues
And realise the world we’re dreaming of is ours
We are both as one, one
So unapologetically in love, oh o
We can speak in tongues
We can speak in tongues
We’re tangled together
Eclipse all our fears and scars
You’re holding me tighter
As we lie beneath the stars
Your mouth, your skin
Glowing in the fading sunlight
My hands all over you
Can’t hold our breath
I need to come up for air now, oh oooo
We can speak in tongues, tongues
And realise the world we’re dreaming of is ours
We are both as one, one
So unapologetically in love, oh o
We can speak in tongues
We can speak in tongues
And realise the world we’re dreaming of is ours
We are both as one, one
So unapologetically in love
We can speak in tongues

This feels like a very solid follow up and more current than That’s Rich—which always felt very demo to me. She seems like a hustler which you have to be in this business so good luck to her as she continues her journey in the music business. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders and a drive.
I love this new song! Her Eurovision performance was AMAZING, the only thing that could have been stronger was the song (like Tongues)
Brooke was so robbed, I hope she gets to have the terrific career she deserves at least!
her not qualifying made me loose hope for ireland, i’m excited to listen to the new song
nobody needs you to be the grammer police
Unfortunately, it happens so often that it needs to be said. It doesn’t help that we seem to have lost the edit button here in the comment section now.
grammar!
oop
I’m still in shock how this didn’t qualify, it had it all. The crowd gave it the biggest cheers, she sang and danced well, connected with the cameras, was engaging and the fireworks elevated it. I thought it was close but missed out, but it wasn’t even that! Anyone point it out for me?
If only she represented another country. If it was Swedish entry, it would have qualified to Final.
She was wearing too many clothes, was not thrown around by the dancers, there were no Spanish words, was not representing Sweden so had to make do with a less favourable running order?
Some things just don’t get enough votes from the public. It just happens sometimes. As for the jury, this was a clear jury repellent imo.
It ended up being my personal 5th of the semi but I knew it never had a shot of making the final. Even with the improved vocals, styling and choreo and genuinely good camera angles.
I thought the standard was very high this year, very competitive and both semis were difficult. I thought this would stand out, being one of the few pure pop songs in its run, and it’s simplicity would connect. Unfortunately maybe the voters simply preferred other songs and voted for those instead! But that’s how the cookie crumbles!
on a different note, did anyone sense something of a Power Puff girls influence in the staging? I think this was intentional
I think her personality was lost and first-time viewers never got to know the best thing about it – Brooke herself.
It’s just the umpire you don’t like.
I’d like to check how these infamous 6 countries voted. I’ve Heard polish commentators were REALLY harsh on her for no good reason. If you’re hearing over and over that someone sucks you won’t vote for them, right? I wonder if same thing happened in Równania, Montenegro, etc.
how this didn’t qualify, well since only sad songs and weird troll entries get preferred these days
Brooke would’ve been a easy q in the early 10’s for sure when we had real music doing well still
My theory is that she was probably LIKED by a lot of televoters but not necessarily LOVED. I don’t have any data to prove it but I’m guessing that most viewers only vote for a few songs and so acts don’t benefit from the ranking system which the juries adhere to. ie she could have been in most people’s top 10 but only in a small amount of people’s top 3 so wouldn’t pick up many televotes. For me personally, she definitely brought the party and woke up the second half of the semi and deserved a place in the… Read more »
Exactly. She delivered a solid performance but not something you’d pick up the phone for. Also loved when people say if this was the early 2010s it would’ve gotten through—isn’t that the song’s problem?! It felt like it was 1-2 decades too late. I actually feel she needed to throw in one of those voice runs like Chanel did instead of that rap-lite portion in order to score jury points and show off her voice we know she has.
