Wiwibloggs is proud to announce a new podcast that goes into the political history of the contest — from the fall of the Iron Curtain to the present. Among other things, we look at it as an arena for cultural diplomacy and the branding of a nation. Beneath the glitz and glamour, what proxy wars are playing out? And what do they tell us about where Europe is today?

In this series, William and Freddy will explore those themes with some very exciting guests telling us their stories first-hand. From running through sniper fire to overcoming religious backlash, our guests offer unique insights into the most significant moments of the contest — and how they reflected the many cleavages and conflicts of the continent.

Episode 1: All the Pain in the World

Politics, war and the Eurovision Song Contest. Long before Russia invaded Ukraine, conflict already coloured the competition. Fazla – Bosnia & Herzogovina’s 1993 singer – risked his life just to get to the contest. To mark the 30th anniversary of his participation, he’s recounted his harrowing journey out of the Siege of Sarajevo to reach Ireland.

I love this idea for a podcast, and such an amazing story, too. Thank you for giving it a platform. I had a few tears when the audience applauded during the televote. It was nice to meet Freddy and I look forward to more episodes!

I have heard this story so many times and yet it always is so haunting. Imagine risking your life just to sing? They had to flee while being attacked and one delegation member even lost his show while fleeing.. And while in Ireland everyone was so protective over the whole team. And of course the best moment of all when after an entire week of phone lines being cut off in Sarajevo, on that evening we heard “this is Sarajevo speaking” on a crap phone line. What a moment! Kinda puts everything in perspective while we argue over staging, lighting… Read more »

As much as I like Wiwi podcasts I just wish they would improve their sound quality. They always sound like they are in a big empty room. Please invest in some sound proofing equipment or software as other podcasters do. But otherwise great content as always. Thanks guys
