Norway: NorthKid present their emotional music video for “Someone”

They weren’t originally scheduled to showcase their song “Someone” during Semi-Final 3 of Melodi Grand Prix 2022. But following a positive Covid result in the originally scheduled act Subwoolfer, the boy group NorthKid had to push everything forward by a week to perform their heartbreaking song “Someone”.

Now the five guys from northern Norway have followed that up by presenting their emotional music video, which they’ve crafted to tug on heart strings and elicit those tears.

“Our songs are often about love, and all the girls – or boys – we didn’t get,” says guitarist and singer Håkon Guttormsen. “Relationships that didn’t turn out the way we wanted and hoped for. That’s why we are so happy we can use our voice and platform to show that love is love, and happens in every age group. Also, this year marks the celebration of it being 50 years since being gay was decriminalized in Norway.”

As you can tell, promoting tolerance and acceptance is a cornerstone of their efforts at MGP this year.

“People might not be as open-minded in smaller villages and remote places, like here in Oslo,” says singer Bilal Saab. “I really hope we can be a voice in the battle for acceptance, and show how beautiful love is – regardless of whom you love.”

“I think there are a lot of people who need to see that guys like us, from small villages like Alta and Hasvik, show that it is cool and totally fine to love whoever.” 

NorthKid release emotional music video for “Someone”

The music video was shot in the stunning northern town of Alta. But we don’t see the boys taking the starring role. Instead, we follow the love story between “Juhan” and “Frøya”, played by the famous Norwegian actors Terje Strømdahl and Thea Stabell. 

The group give credit to a certain Eurovision winner for this winning partnership.

Bass player Vegard Olaussen said: “Actually, it was Hanne Krogh from Bobbysocks who put us in touch with Terje Strømdahl. So I guess we can say this video would have never happened without the help from a true Eurovision legend. Terje and Thea gives us chills from the first scene, they are truly amazing!”

MGP Semi-FInal 3 performance

The group were not satisfied with their performance during Semi-Final 3, which they say was marred by technical difficulties.

Lead singer Bilal can be seen holding his ear several times, indicating a sound issue, and the big curtain reveal got stuck.

But these boys are made of stars and they are putting those problems behind them so they can focus on the final.

“I guess we can all agree that Saturday’s show didn’t go exactly as planned, but that’s live TV for you. However, for that reason, there will be an even bigger contrast to our performance in the final where everything hopefully will be on point. We’ve gotten assurance from NRK that the technique won’t fail us then.”

“At the same time, I have to say we are really happy after Saturday’s performance – it was so much fun finally being able to perform our song live. Now we are working hard every day on making sure the performance in the final will be out of this world”
