He wants his special someone to make him “Dizzy” with their kisses and to spin him ’round and ’round. But Olly Alexander does not want to stand on a Lazy Susan and pretend to be butter.

Hell to the no. Speaking to our Cinan at the Eurovision PrePartyES in Madrid on Friday, the former Years & Years frontman said he wants the crowd to expect the unexpected.

As you can see from around seven minutes in our interview below, Olly is thinking outside of the box and wants to douse said box in gasoline. He’s ready to blaze a trail to Malmö with intrigue and mystery — and one very well-known stage director.

Olly Alexander teases “gritty” stage show…but not “something that spins around”

So what should we expect?

“I want it to be surprising for the audience, something they’re not quite expecting,” he says.

“I definitely want to bring a sense of dizziness, but I think people might be expecting something that spins around, but I’m probably not going to do that. I just really want to stand out in the competition. Something unique. I hope it’s going to be quite gritty.”

Olly is working with Theo Adams, the creative director and artist who has worked with big-time stars including Paloma Faith, Kylie Minogue, and Jessi Ware. On top of his existing work, Theo is also a huge Eurovision fan, which likely explains why Olly considers him his “secret weapon.”

So will the choreography on stage match the choreo we saw in Olly’s slick music video? He says you’ll have to wait and see.

Following Saturday’s concert in Madrid, Olly has seen his odds to win the competition climb slightly, reflecting the goodwill toward his debut live performance.

I really think they SHOULD consider having some sort of moving or spinning props or platform he has to stand or sit on. It just wouldn’t make sense otherwise.

I’ve watched Eurovision since the 60’s and have never once tuned into the semi finals . This year I will be tuning in to the semis as excited to see Ollys preformance and staging ?

Im no fan of this UK song, but I do see that Olly uses all his talents and craftmanship performing it to his best.

I enjoy seeing what he is doing and hope for a good endresult for the UK.

I hope it’s not revolving camerawork, because that really does make me dizzy. Also nauseous. Angelina gave a performance at Sanremo this year which left me with stars whizzing around my eyes.

The best surprise he can do is to bring a better song to the contest. Seriously I was expecting a lot from him and that dizzy song is just background music of a clothing shop.

I was letdown too. Knowing he’s capable of better, he just went with a song you get fed up of too fast

I like the song, I actually think it’s one to repeat a few times. But I agree that it doesn’t have a particular wow moment in its 3 minutes, at least not the audio track. Let’s see what he brings to the stage. Hopefully it will live up to expectations and be the kind of performance people want to come back to on YouTube and play and play again.

Funny, because I heard it in Zara last week.

I hope the staging goes well. It’s usually something the UK is poor at.

I’m gonna guess aerial work like Conchita’s opening number in 2015.

I think the same. The crawling on the floor like in het video is reminding me too much of Smeagol in LOTR

a breakdancer next to Olly perhaps, who spins around next to him as his choreography

similar to the breakdancer with MILF Kati Wolf her slayage of a performance in 2011
