We haven’t heard anything new from Alexander Rybak in a looong time — and for good reason. The Eurovision 2009 winner was busy with ‘MILKI‘ — his entry for Belarus’ Eurovision selection — and then found himself performing at the ESC pre-party in Riga, concerts, birthdays and so on. The man is in demand.
But he’s finally BACK with fresh material. “Kotik” — that’s “Kitty” in English — is classic Alexander, replete with violin, love, an infectious beat and, um, beautiful girls. It’s a real earworm.
Lyrically the song takes us into the mind of a man who can’t get a woman out of his head: “I can’t stop thinking about you, I go to sleep earlier my kitty..kitty..kitty..kitty, So that I can be alone with you for at least a short time.”
He says it’s his first composition in Russian, though a few years back he did release a few songs and music videos in Russian, for example ‘Chernaya molnia’, ‘Strela Amura’ and ‘Nebesa Evropy’.

Kotik lyrics / translation — Alexander Rybak
A long time ago I decided that I will never fall in love again,
and now you’ve come, my kitty..kitty..kitty..kitty..
I was independent, and now it’s so boring here without you.
You are breaking my heart, playing with my soul..
And I don’t mind, let people laugh at me,
But only when I fall asleep, my bunny..bunny..bunny..
You’re right here and wings start growing on my back,
And when I’m flying above the clouds I’m dreaming only about one thing..
Chorus:
Maybe, maybe we can
Break the shackles of sleep and be together forever..
And maybe love will help
Turn a magical dream into reality, in which there are only you and me…
I can’t stop thinking about you,
I go to sleep earlier my kitty..kitty..kitty..kitty
So that I can be alone with you for at least a short time.
Twisting in my bed, trying to fall asleep, but I immediately wake up..
Let them say that we will never be together,
That it only happens in dreams, my bunny..bunny..bunny
But for you I will move mountains..
The only thing I know that I’m dreaming only about you..
Chorus:
Maybe, maybe we can
Break the shackles of sleep and be together forever..
And maybe love will help
Turn a magical dream into reality, in which there are only you and me…
And then one morning, when I haven’t even opened my eyes,
You are already standing in front of me, my kitty..kitty..kitty..
Since then I never let you go,
Since then I’m sure I’m not dreaming in vain..
I’ve believed since childhood that miracles do exist,
And you’re one of them, my bunny..bunny..bunny..bunny
Since then I never let you go,
Since then I’m sure I’m not dreaming in vain..
Maybe, maybe we can
Break the shackles of sleep and be together forever..
And maybe love will help
Turn a magical dream into reality for the one who is head over heels in love.

This is rather cute and fun – nice!
In hindsight, I don’t understand how Alexander won with such a large margin of over 160 points. It was that good compared to the rest of the field. I’ve only like one of his song since Eurovision. And that was leave me alone. Both Loreen and Lena have evolved as artists since winning. Alex hasn’t and its a bit of a disappointment.
“Yes sir,I can boogie”
how he ever could’ve won is beyond me…
“Kitty kitty kitty kitty”? Really? Seriously?
Fine.The present from Alex.
Another excellent single from Alexander! Love how he’s infusing electronic music with traditional. I love him, he’s the best!
I can’t help thinking this would have been perfect for Eurovision. A bit old fashion style and definately immediately catchy. The disco violin gives flashback to Baccara. Yes sir, you can boogie:)
He has to enhance his accent.
It’s really catchy <3
I like it!
