María Isabel, Spain’s only winner of JESC, never left the spotlight. Her first four albums all went platinum, with her debut doing so five times over. She is still a big name in Spain, even though she has been relatively quiet recently as she finished her studies.
Well now she is inching back into the headlines with a hot new single called “La vida sólo es una” (Only One Life). It’s about making the most of your time on Earth — and naturally that includes matters of the heart. María re-invents herself as Queen of EDM, singing to the object of her affection: “a un milímetro de ti / solo a un paso de mis pies / a un milímetro, rozándonos / ahora sé que tú lo sabes y yo que lo sabes tú” — or “a milimeter away from you / just a step from my feet / a milimeter, brushing against each other / now I know you know it and I know, that you know it.”
The video shows Miss Isabel voguing to the camera, pouting, dancing with her girls, and working a number of frocks. It’s the same star quality that helped her win Junior Eurovision 2004 with her song “Antes muerta que sencilla” (Better Dead than Plan) — at the age of nine. She remains the youngest-ever winner and retains the highest-ever score of 171 points.
