After months of speculation of who will represent France at Eurovision, broadcaster France 2 has just dropped a hint about the identity of its act for Stockholm, and promised that all will be revealed on 12 March.

This morning the broadcaster tweeted a photo of a dressing room laden with make-up, suggesting that their act will be a person – or persons – who wears make-up when filming for television. Which is, er, pretty much everyone, male or female.

“Hint # 1: Day shooting. Rendezvous here on 12.03.16 to see the artist who will represent France !!!”

The tweet also said that all would be revealed in little over five weeks, when the act will be announced on 12 March. This will make France one of the last countries to reveal their act for Stockholm, with Sweden and Lithuania also deciding on the 12th, followed by Azerbaijan announcing on the 14th.

The story so far

France is again choosing their act via internal selection. Back in October, broadcaster France 2 kicked off an open-submission period, surprisingly not accepting entries from artists over 50. This was thought to have been a reaction to the lack of success that 46-year-old Lisa Angell brought in Vienna, and the need for France to enter with a modern, youthful song.

The broadcaster received over 280 entries, with France 2 Director of Entertainment Nathalie André saying the broadcaster was looking for a song that “reflects our era”.

Then just a couple of weeks ago, members of the French Eurovision team began tweeting about the song “Alive”, the debut single from young singer Sasha. The song was three minutes in length and had French and English lyrics, which led fans to speculate that this was France’s pick for Stockholm. Or could it have been an unsuccessful hopeful, being given a boost from the broadcaster as a consolation prize?

She’s booked for a concert in Caen, France on 14 May.

No Troye Sivan for Australia, now no Louane for France, it’s a big dissappointment for me. I’m upset.

Bien sûr – could be anyone else, but I am over excited for Louane since the Wiwibloggs article back to June about her, telling ‘doing Eurovision would have been cool’.

She subsequently released ‘Nos secrets’, a bilingual song in French and some English lyrics… So I am still like it’s quite possible.

Also, I think Louane is booked for a big (or special) show on the 20th of May. She will have to prepare for that for weeks. So maybe it’s not her? It could really be someone else. 😮

If it really is Louane, it’s a great move from the French! She’s young and enjoying a huge success at the moment. She’s all over the news in France and French-speaking countries (here in Switzerland and in Belgium as well), her songs play on French radio all the time, her album topped the charts last year, and she won a Cesar for “most promising actress” last year for her role in “La famille Bélier” (which is a big deal in France). It would be the first time that France sends a singer that is at the top of her game.… Read more »

I’d be happy if it’s really Louane, but I’d be happier if Sasha goes to Stockholm. Sasha already has the song and a lot of fans already reacted positively to it. If it is Louane who’s going to carry the French flag on May and has a wonderful song as good as or even better than Alive, then I’d still be rooting for France.
