It seemed like Serbia had forgotten all about Eurovision 2016 — but it looks like that just changed. According to a report by Serbian news website Telegraf, the singer Sanja Vucic is going to Stockholm. She will be performing a song called “Shelter“, with the message behind the song being about violence towards women. The report also suggests that Sanja will be singing in English, much like last year’s Serbian representative, Bojana Stamenov. The song is set to be debuted on March 12th.

Sanja was reportedly picked purposefully because she is not a well known solo singer. Most notably, she has been the lead singer of the band ZAA, although she will be going solo in Stockholm. As part of the band, Sanja has toured across the former Yugoslavian states, so there’s a chance she will have some considerable public support behind her.

The Telegraf report does, however, state that Sanja was not the first choice of the Serbian broadcaster. Reportedly, RTS wanted Ivana Peters from the band Negative to be the Serbian representative. That possibility was thrown out though when Ivana signed up for the Serbian version of “Your Face Sounds Familiar”. What’s interesting is that “Shelter” was written by Ivana — so it seems that there was a plan in place.

The choice comes after the likes of girlband The Frajle and turbo-folk queen Jelena Karleusa were rumoured to be the Serbian representative. RTS have clearly decided to go down the lesser known route though and will be hoping that it brings them continued success, following Bojana’s top 10 finish on their return.

She will sing with ZAA as Sanja feat. ZAA. Everyone knows now, that it is risky to compete with next solo female, who create 50% of all contestants. Thanks God, Serbia thinks about it.

Hard to tell anything already, but looks like we won’t hear Serbian language in Stockholm… Still, as long as it’s better than last year’s **** I’ll be happy.
