Brexit Eurovision Playlist

On Thursday, the people of the United Kingdom will take to the polls and vote whether they want the country to remain in the European Union or not. Regardless of the outcome, the result will have an impact far beyond British shores. Just last month, the eyes and ears of the continent were firmly focused on Stockholm, where 24 of the 28 EU member states competed for Eurovision glory alongside Russia, Australia and more. In fact, all 28 nations have participated in the contest at some point in its 60 year history. So as the referendum campaign gets ever more heated, we’ve decided to lighten the mood by creating the ultimate Eurovision Brexit playlist. Whether you’re a staunch Eurosceptic, a Europhile through and through or simply a reluctant voter, we’ve got a suitable Eurovision song for you.

Vote Remain

Pastora Soler “Quédate Conmigo (Stay With Me)” — Spain 2012

“Fight the shadows, light the way, stay with me for one more day… I never meant to lose your heart”

Sonia “Better The Devil You Know”– United Kingdom 1993

“Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”

https://youtu.be/lZ_tOw6lfIY

Dima Bilan “Never Let You Go” — Russia 2006

“We are dancing on broken glass, can’t stand no more, never, never let you go… Return the days we had before”

Electro Velvet “Still In Love With You — United Kingdom 2015

“I’m still in love with you”

Tooji “Stay” — Norway 2012

“I don’t know if it’s wrong or it’s right but I know: I want you to stay”

Sergey Lazarev “You Are The Only One” — Russia 2016

“Everything we had is staying unbroken, now you will always be the only one, you’re the only one. Won’t ever give up cause you’re still somewhere out there. Nothin’ or no-one’s gonna keep us apart”

Francesca Michielin “No Degree Of Separation” — Italy 2016

“There’s no division keeping us apart. We are going the same direction in this universe on the move.”

Anita Simoncini & Michele Perniola “Chain of Lights” — San Marino 2015

“One’s a lonely number – but together we can make a million candles shine forever.”

Loreen “Euphoria” — Sweden 2012

“Eu-phoria. Forever, ‘til the end of time.”

Toto Cutugno “Insieme 1992” — Italy 1990

“We’re more and more free, our stars, one single flag. We’re stronger and stronger. Give me your hand and you’ll see yourself flying, Europe is not far away. This is an Italian song for you, together, unite, unite, Europe.”

Vote Leave

Lidia Kopania “I Don’t Wanna Leave” — Poland 2009

“I don’t wanna leave, but it’s my destiny”

Alsou “Solo” — Russia Eurovision 2000

“Now I wait in the cold and this is getting old. No more stories, no more lies, take me off this ride. When you see me in the hall, I’ll look at the wall. By my actions you should know I’m going solo, going solo.”

Mei Feingold “Same Heart” — Israel 2014

“And now, too many lies. Too many cries. They are as long as the infinity. I’m, starting to rise… I’m, skinning you out, no longer a part. We don’t beat from the same heart”

Maria Elena Kyriakou “One Last Breath” — Greece 2015

“I’m begging you take me out of this firing hell. Come back and save me what happened wasn’t fair. Nothing left all that I have is one last breath only one last breath.”

Sung in front of a background that closely resembles the EU flag.

Hanna Pakarinen “Leave Me Alone” — Finland 2007

“I have to leave, but you are still sleeping. There’s nothing to say, our time has run out… But you don’t even care what I am about… Leave me alone, I wanna go home”

Molly Sterling “Playing With Numbers” — Ireland 2015

“I made the mess in your vision and I see a debt to be paid… I was playing with numbers and I didn’t know what it meant.”

Rambo Amadeus “Euro Neuro” — Montenegro 2012

“Euro skeptic… Euro neuro don’t be dogmatic, bureaucratic, you need to become pragmatic.”

Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira “Run Away” — Moldova 2010

“Let me breathe, let me live! Just run away from my mind… We have no progressive future! I know your lying nature.”

Andrea Demirovic — “Just Get Out of My Life” — Montenegro 2009

“Everybody’s tryin‘ to help me to come free. Everybody’s talkin‘ bout all the things i’m missin‘. And for all them reasons I must agree… Just get out of my life. Get out of my life”.

Athena “For Real” — Turkey 2004

“All I know is you don’t want to be part of the crowd… Are you in? Are you out? Do you know your way out?”

Regardless of political views, Britain needs to channel Bucks Fizz and make its mind up.

Bucks Fizz “Making Your Mind Up” — United Kingdom 1981

“But soon you will find that there comes a time for making your mind up… Don’t let your indecision take you from behind. Trust your inner vision, don’t let others change your mind.”

https://youtu.be/boEph_ic-NM

Because, for once, the power really lies with the people.

Molly Smitten-Downes “Children Of The Universe” — United Kingdom 2014

“Power to the people (oh, hey, hey). Power to the people (oh, oh, oh, oh). Power to the people (oh, hey, hey). You know what we want and we’ve gotta get it now.”

So Brexit won…
Congratz Adam, you don’t need to book tickets for Venezuela. Enjoy your “non-violent crises”!

Some people are already saying that Scotland could call for a new breakaway referendum, and rejoin the EU, because of the Brexit. They voted to stay.

@Liam: Then brace yourself. The Brexit is in the books. Hope the fallout is short-term. What would it take to defy what is said to be a non-binding referendum? And what would happen if the U.K. decides to honor the result? Some people are already saying that Scotland could call for

If we (UK) leave the EU it pretty much denies us from ever winning or getting a good result in Eurovision ever again

Comments please

@Andrew

Luxembourg, they competed almost on every edition since the first until 1993 and they refuse to compete again. Italy also quit between 1997 and 2010

Have any countries done a Eurovisionxit? That is, been a regular entrant to Eurovision but has left the competition for a long time. Maybe Turkey?

Also, if you want something Europe-related, there’s always “Down Under” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUsJi8nKsj0 , though it’s really cringe-worthy (the act preceding Mauboy, not her).

They are able to compete in the Euro, Albania and Turkey, who are not members of the EU, was competing. But there are political risks of a brexit, like those Adam wanted.

But please UK, vote Bremain!

@Sezzyyy

I don’t know about euro but they the UK will be able to take part in Eurovision even if they leave the EU. Israel and many more countries can take part and they are not members of the EU. The EU has nothing to do with Eurovision.

@Adam By the way if you want the Western World to have a political and diplomatic crisis then you can move to Venezuela and live it yourself. There is little food or medicine so people are looting, clashing with the police and stealing others people’s food. And there’s no such as a non-violent crisis. When people get desperate, violence eventually occurs. Venezuela was one of the strongest economies in Latin America. In 1999, they voted to become a socialist republic and now is the worst economy in the world. This has nothing to do with the UK. But is just… Read more »

As a British citizen I’m voting to remain in EU I’d rather have things stay the same rather than a possibility we leave and things get worse

sterling will drop massively and ruin the economy in Britain. Stupid campaigners for Brexit should think about it.

Plus Britain will be isolated and the relationship with Europe will reach rock bottom.

EU migrants have helped a lot the British economy, they are paying a lot of taxes and work in jobs that locals wouldn’t touch. Shame on nationalists for putting the blame to EU migrants.

The EU will never be fixed unless the UK leaves. Then the EU will have to make the changes it need to survive, if the UK stay it will just fall apart by 2020 and that would be the real disaster!

i’d vote for a Brexit. The Western World is getting too boring and honestly we need some drama to spice things up a bit. I wanna see some (non violent) political and diplomatic crises happening to us for once lol

Great work Padraig but I noticed a mistake: Alsou represented Russia with “Solo” in 2000, not 2009.
