Hovi Star has been keeping busy since he gave Israel a 14th place finish at Eurovision 2016 with “Made of Stars”. He recently returned to Sweden when he performed at Stockholm Pride, and used the opportunity to film material for his brand new vlog.
Hovi Star’s new YouTube channel, HOVI STAR VLOGS, has recently launched with two videos, which take viewers behind the scenes at Stockholm Pride.
It’s an honest look at the reality of travel for a gigging pop singer. As well as the glamour of the big Pride gigs, Hovi also captures the tedium of the pop life, with flight delays, hotels, endless travelling between venues, and boredom.
But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel when Hovi visits Allsång på Skansen‘s pride show, and watches Jamala’s emotional performance from the audience. We’re also treated to Hovi rehearsing with his Swedish backing singers, delivering an a cappella version of “Made of Stars”.
In the second video, things pick up. Hovi delivers a big version of “Made of Stars” to the schlager-loving Pride crowd, and he has a boogie on stage with fellow Pride performer Barei.
We also see Hovi play a surprise gig where he joins a Balkan band for a special performance of “Made of Stars”, and he has plenty of fun taking in the Stockholm Pride nightlife.
They’re enjoyable videos, shot in an endearing amateur style. But to be honest, we’d rather see less of the travel tedium and more interesting pop star stuff. These two videos could easily have been edited down into one shorter and really compelling video. And while Hovi is wonderful on screen, his habit of describing everything that he’s about to do gets a little boring: show, don’t tell!
But Hovi is still a star and his vlogs do capture a lot of the magic of Stockholm Pride. We can’t wait to see his next videos!
