In 2016, Turkish television producer Serhat gave San Marino its third-best Eurovision result with “I Didn’t Know”. Now, two years later, the song is enjoying a different kind of success. The 2017 remix of “I Didn’t Know” — featuring guest vocals from disco diva Martha Wash — has reached No.38 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

Serhat shared the good news with his fans on social media. The hat-wearing star wrote: “After many years a song from Eurovision Song Contest entered the USA Billboard dance charts. Serhat feat. Martha Wash with I Didn’t Know is rising.”

The Billboard Dance Club Songs chart is not based on sales. Rather, the chart rankings are determined by reports from a sampling of nightclub DJs across the United States. They report on what songs they are playing and the top 50 is compiled from that data.

The appearance of “I Didn’t Know” in the chart is a sign that Serhat’s disco duet is getting played in discotheques across America, serving 1970s Studio 54 realness in 2018.

The remix of “I Didn’t Know” — featuring vocals from the “It’s Raining Men” singer Martha Wash — was released in November. At the time, Serhat told us that he has admired Martha for years and was over the moon when she reached out to his team.

He said, “She is a real icon in the music industry and one of the most beautiful voices in the world. All her songs from her entire career are my favourites in my playlists. It made me very very happy that she wanted to collaborate with me.”

Martha had discovered the Eurovision version of the song online and proposed that she join Serhat on it as a duet. She said, “It was such a big experience to fly to Istanbul to meet Serhat and I am so happy about the final result of the song. I felt it was perfect singing in duet and our voices match perfectly together.”

The appearance of “I Didn’t Know” in the Billboard charts continues the unlikely history of the song. It was originally released as a dramatic ballad to a mixed reception from fans. However, after a disco remix was released to wide acclaim, this version became the Eurovision entry.

The song went on to place 12th in the semi-final in Stockholm — San Marino’s third-best result at Eurovision. The song has gone on to become a Euroclub classic.

“Toy” and “Fuego” are both songs that I feel would begin to find an U\S audience in dance clubs. The same could be said about “Lie to Me.”

My theory is that in the US disco has a stigma of being for older gay men, and Martha Wash’s biggest hit is a disco song that became a staple of Pride Playlists. So this is something that is new by her and Pride Month just started so I feel like we will see this go upon the ranking.

That’s incredible! Maybe that’s what the other Eurovision stars need to do– do a collab with US singers to break into there.

Many Eurovision entrants have collaborated with American artists and they failed to qualify. Collaborating with anyone doesn’t entitle you to success unless you’re talented or simply entertaining. Luck is a myth!

Yeah like that Ukrainian girl who beat Jamala to go to ESC in 2011, Mika Newton worked with Randy Jackson to launch a solo career but still didn’t make it big in the U.S.

Lets not forget that Valentina collaborated with Jimmie Wilson (an American) only to end up last in their semi-final last year. I haven’t heard that song since ESC 2017.
