The post-Eurovision circuit can be a demanding gig. Two months out from the contest, Mikolas Josef has gone from strength to strength, flossing his way across Europe and releasing a Spanish version of his Eurovision song “Lie To Me”.
Mikolas recently performed on Germany’s Morgenmagazin breakfast show, reminiscing about his Eurovision experience. The Czech singer, who was only used to busking on the streets prior to the contest, told the host that performing to such a large crowd on the Lisbon stage was a scary experience.
No doubt his busking experience proved handy — delivering an engaging performance full of colourful pants, a heavily gunned trumpeter and a IDGAF attitude on German television.
It was a performance to be proud of — but it was no doubt an early start for the studio audience, who watched intently but were noticeably subdued. Not even Mikolas’ spaghetti and wood bamboo could get a rise. Get them some coffee and Berliners, stat!
Mikolas was not the only alumni to appear on the show in recent weeks. Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai also recently performed on the program with her vocal looper. She brought a new — yet signature — Netta look, including a Harajuku-inspired hot pink and black combo hairstyle.
The studio audience did bring along a German sense of both sensibility and of enthusiasm, clapping along during the final refrain. Such is the power of Netta!
Wiwiblogger Ron put it best on Instagram, observing, “That’s the most shocked audience I’ve ever seen. Poor Mikolas and Netta. “Good morning Germany… Is there anybody here, Germany?” OUCH”
Netta is gearing up for some stellar appearances, including an appearance on NBC’s Today show. She becomes the second Israeli Eurovision entry to appear on the program after Eurovision legend Ofra Haza, who performed on the show in 1983.
What did you think of Mikolas’ rendition of “Lie to Me” for the German audience? How do you think American crowds will take to Netta’s performance? Let us know in the comments below.
This is natural reaction, not like other shows that have stage directors to tell people when to applaud, scream, laugh…. The most atrocious audience is in Wendy Williams Show. Staged af.
Netta was great, she will be the queen of pop and make Israel proud!
German crowds are notoriously DEAD.
Amen.
Poor Mikolas. That crowd didn’t deserve your talents.
Talk about the wrong audience. Maybe try an evening show instead?
The Morgenmagazin is not a music show.
If you want to see a screaming german audience you should go to a Mike Singer concert.
No one wants to see a bunch of screaming primary school girls dd
I think one problem here is that all those people are seated separately (probably to make the audience look larger than it is) so it’s quite hard for them to be driven by the masses. If you’re more or less alone, it must feel quite awkward to start clapping and dancing. Besides, the younger people in the audience were probably on a school trip so they probably weren’t there voluntarily to start with.
Well, don’t blame the artists, I haven’t watched Mikolas’s performance, but I’m sure he did just as well as Netta, who did outstandingly!
The Germans were pretty hard on France Gall too >> https://youtu.be/7Rtdb_zgqdQ?t=58s
Germans, don’t take it to heart. It’s all in good fun. I know you’re as party loving as the next guy.
I’m lucky I didnt watch it. It’s very embarassing. But I as a german didnt expect anything else from my fellow people hahaha
People and cultures are different. Bashing germans seems to be so easy! How do you think American crowds will take to Netta’s performance? Omg, comparing nations should not be encouraged on your website. Everyone has the right to have a different taste of music, respect that, and don’t bash german audiences. Not everyone feels comfortable enough to dance in a tv show on a very young age, and not on 5:30 o’clock in the morning! Also most tv shows tell the audience when to clap and what to do! Be more tolerant, wiwibloggs!
Haha yes, I know exactly what you mean, wiwibloggs. I watch our ZDF morning show quite often and it is always the same to be honest. The thing is, there are enthuastic people here in Germany but obviously not that much ESC fans sitting in our morning show 😀 The young people are strange, very young boys like me who do not appreciate Netta or Mikolas which is quite strange that there are many young “haters” 🙁 I remember watching French singer Louane (Avenir) in our German morning show in 2015 and the audience was really bored 🙁
Not the most awkward performance by a Eurovision act. Freddie from Hungary still holds that record when he performed Pioneer to a swimming pool filled with old people.

Ahh, look, the good thing about rap as an art form is that it can be enjoyed as a sermon as much as a dance track … especially on morning-time kids’ TV in Germany … 🙂
