They say that Eurovision and politics don’t mix, but Minus One play by their own rules. They have released a lyric video for their song “The Greatest”, throwing plenty of shade at US President Donald Trump. One of the most controversial figures in modern politics, Trump has more than his share of critics. Minus One are certainly on that list.

“The Greatest” — Minus One

The Cypriot band brought the rock anthem “Alter Ego” to Eurovision 2016 and have been producing quality rock music since. “The Greatest” comes off their latest album Red Black White, released in December 2018.

Minus One have plenty to say about the most powerful man on earth. The lyrics declare, “You think you know it all, that you’re above it all, that you’re the one, that you’re the greatest.” Clearly our favourite Cypriot rock band would beg to differ with President Trump’s self-perception.

The video starts with the Donald declaring that, “I’m going to be working for you, I’m not gonna have time to go play golf”. There is no shortage of footage throughout the video of Donald Trump playing golf during his presidency.

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Chris Ioannides of Minus One told us, “Although it wasn’t our intention in the beginning [for the song] to be about ‘The Donald’, by the time the song was recorded, it all came together. It was like an inside joke in the beginning until the idea of the video came up. Being the people we are, it was a simple ‘yeah, let’s do this’. In our opinion, (and probably most of the world’s), it’s pretty spot on. And although trolling President Trump is nothing new, we liked the fact that it would be something different for us. We aren’t, and never want to get political, but satirising the T- man is fun. He’s just asking for it with every tweet.”

Minus One certainly aren’t the only Eurovision artists who have a thing or two to say about President Trump. From Russia’s Serebro to Slovenia’s Maraaya, many Eurovision artists have used references to Trump in their material in different ways.

What do you think of “The Greatest”? Do you enjoy Minus One’s take on President Trump? Let us know in the comments below.

“The Greatest” — Minus One lyrics

Every day
The promise stays the same
I know the way, I’ll show it to you
Just take it
Trust me, I know it’s hard
But it’s worth it

Day by day
The story stays the same
You show a way that looks like a narrow one-way
My trust it fades away
Starts bleeding

You think you know it all
That you’re above it all
That you’re the one
That you’re the greatest
You think you know it all
But you’re impossible
You think you’re it
But you’re a maybe

I can’t take this s*** no more

Every day
The promise stays the same
I know the way, I’ll show it to you
Just take it
Trust me, I know it’s hard
But it’s worth it

Day by day
Rewind and play again
You show a way that looks like a narrow one-way
No trust left to hold on to
It faded

Shut it
Shut it
You shut it

You think you know it all
That you’re above it all
That you’re the one
That you’re the greatest
You think you know it all
That you’re unbreakable
The only choice
That’s left to take, yeah
You think you know it all
But you’re impossible
You think you’re it
But you’re a maybe

I can’t take this s*** no more

Shut your mouth!

You think you know it all
That you’re above it all
That you’re the one
That you’re the greatest
You think you know it all
But you’re impossible
You think you’re it
But you’re a maybe

This song sounds like it was written by an angry 13 year old. So cringe it hurts.

How creative. A “rock” band from Cyprus release a dis song about the democratically elected leader of another country…not even a European one either.

I hear the bandwagon coming into town. And before I get attacked by the “Everyone’s entitled to an opinion as long as it’s the right opinion” brigade, I want it known that I’m not a Trump fan either, however, as I’m Irish, I find that the democratically elected leader of another nation is not my business.

I miss rock and metal bands. Hungary deserved better. Hopefully finland will send something heavy.

The lyrics are horrible and this is just sad. They should be the bigger men instead of playing fire with fire and lowering their level to politics.

I dont like Hillary or Trump but what an awful song that is. Ironic that they made a lyric video as well. The lyrics was the worst part about it. “You think you are it, but you are a maybe”? I could make up better lyrics in my sleep. Didnt really see any clever shots either, just a messy song with lyrics that make no sense whatsoever

Brilliant! The lyrics summarize Trump perfectly and Minus One did… to quote Mr Orange himself “such a great job, one of the best Rock songs I’ve heard in ages, believe me and they’re only from Cyprus, a tiny country surrounded by water, big water” xD with all his former campaign and administration officials charged and sentenced lately I do wonder how long this circus will continue, as terrible it is it’s hilarious to watch at the same time. I don’t think Philip Kirkorov, a pal of Trumpy Bumpy would be too impressed with this song lol

I admire them for doing that. He’s been even worse than usual lately. Speaking on behalf of the US: we hate him too, most of us want him gone, we’re incrediblu sorry that any of us could’ve gone and let this guy take office. He’s made us look like fools. More than usual, at least.

Joe can speak on my behalf, particularly because he has Don Music as his avatar!

No self-respecting Eurovision fan can support Trump and Eurovision. They’re completely different ideals. One wants to bring people together, the other wants to tear them apart.

No self-respecting person lives in such a black and white world. 😛

Oh, and actually, they are very similar. Donny wants money. The EBU wants money.

@Joe Well, see if you consider me a Eurovision fan. I follow the contest closely because I am very passionate about music and like to see what types of songs succeed, and what reviewers say. (I personally am a piano composer and enter composition contests).

As for US politics, I voted for Trump. Although I have had meaningful concerns about some of what he’s done during 2018, I will wait one more year to see how he maneuvers some situations before I make a judgment regarding his presidency.

One thing we already know: He’s much less of a war-monger than the Republican who ran for the Democrats would have been.

Failure. It has nothing to do with satire. It’s barely a song. If you wanna make fun of a dude who constantly out-crazies even the most daring comedians, you gotta go all out and write some bold and witty lyrics. This is nothing. A song as weak as Hilly was a Presidential Candidate.
