He’s a man of a thousand faces and characters. But as Tom Neuwirth, a.k.a Conchita Wurst, a.k.a WURST, moves between various projects, he’s very much connecting them with one defined attribute: star quality!
WURST was the star guest of the latest episode of Late Night Berlin, the biggest latenight show in Germany. Among other things, he discussed his upcoming LP T.O.M- Truth Over Magnitude, his meeting with Celine Dion, his new show on German TV and a rather bemusing Russian conspiracy theory.
Host Klaas Heufer-Umlauf pointed out that his victory took place more than five years ago. Yet he currently seems busier than ever with lots of projects coming out in the coming months. WURST is grateful for the support. “I don’t know how that happened and I’m very grateful and happy, but I’m having so much fun. Maybe that’s why.”
But what’s his secret been in maintaining relevance long after the Eurovision glory faded?
WURST suggests that it might be his authenticity and ability to adapt. “The things I do reflect my situation in life and progress is the only thing that pushes me. But also because I get bored extremely easily. And when I’m bored, I have no fun.”
However, this versatility creates room of uncertainty when others meet him. What are the correct pronouns? Do I address him/her with Tom or Conchita or WURST? Am I going to make a major faux pas? WURST had a magnanimous answer.
“Thank you for thinking you could do something wrong, but you cannot. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter. Everything is correct. I also turn around, if you just shout ‘hey!'”
He also addressed a rather amusing rumour, apparently of Russian origin, that Conchita is portrayed by a married heterosexual man who is the father of two young children.
“Thank you for your attention,” WURST says of the matter. ” The amount of effort used, in order to report about me — that’s almost an accolade.”
It’s not really worth mentioning that these rumours aren’t correct.
In 2017, he met one of his biggest musical influences: Celine Dion. “My musical education spans from Celine Dion to Björk, that’s the spectrum I’m interested in. I was able to meet her and was and still am a huge fan. I even have a shirt of our picture! […] I love her, she has an amazing voice even today. I really wanted to talk to her, she is lovely but she lives in her own world, which I think is great.”
His new show “Queen of Drags” will premiere on November 14th. He will be part of the jury, together with Heidi Klum and Bill Kaulitz (singer of Tokio Hotel and Klum’s brother-in-law). “We want to introduce the audience to the topic of drag, because we think it’s a great theme.”
The new album T.O.M — Truth Over Magnitude will be released on October 25th.
