The past year has been wonderful for Lake Malawi. After winning the highly competitive Czech online national final, ESCZ, they went on to Eurovision 2019 where they ranked second in their semi-final, and secured a respectable eleventh place finish in the grand final.

Since then, they’ve picked up a Vision Music Award for the Most Improved Act. Lead vocalist Albert Černý is also currently trying his luck at Szansa na Sukces – Eurowizja 2020, Poland’s national final for Eurovision 2020. But, make no mistake — Lake Malawi is still alive, and the trio have just dropped their new single, “Lucy“.

Lake Malawi release new single “Lucy”

“Lucy” is a radio-pop number. It has rock and electro elements with pitch-perfect harmonies in the chorus. The style here sits well with their 80’s inspired catalogue.

Although this track is a jointly written effort with Austria’s Cesar Sampson, and co-produced with Norway’s JOWST, the spoken line “Have you considered becoming an actress?” cements “Lucy” as a stand-out Lake Malawi track.

The track was inspired by the band’s fun experiences with a cardboard cut-out of Eurovision 2019 host Lucy Ayoub in the press room during their time in Tel Aviv. In the music video, Albert takes a cut-out of a different Lucy – YouTuber Lucie Ehrenbergerova – on days out in Czech Republic’s two key cities; Prague and Brno.

Lake Malawi – “Lucy”

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Lake Malawi explain:

“Lucy” was directed by our drummer Antonín Hrabal. He worked extra-hard in the last few weeks and we are happy and excited about the result. The idea for the music video was born backstage at Eurovision 2019 when we came across an abandoned cardboard figure of the host Lucy Ayoub. We took her to breakfast, tried playing table tennis with her and had a good laugh carrying her everywhere with us.

Then, Antonin introduced the jealous shredder on the scene. Although Lucy the cut-out died then, it gave birth to a new idea, and we wanted to replicate this idea in a music video. We approached Lucie Ehrenbergerova, a successful YouTuber to star in the video, and she agreed.

When shooting the video in Prague, it was terribly cold. We got strange looks from crowds. Then we moved to Brno to continue shooting, drawing even more puzzling reactions. The skating part was our favourite part of the video. But underlying all the fun lies a really important message. Stay with the one you love because no multiplying effect of a thousand other Lucys can replace the Lucy you love.

Wise words from a smart band.

Beyond “Lucy”, Lake Malawi are performing on the Jana Krause show on February 19th and at Prague Rocks 2020 at the Sinobo Stadium in July.

Additionally, they’re preparing for another big show. On November 6th in Prague’s O2 Universum, Stuck in the 80s will serve as the event for the trio’s album launch.

Lyrics: Lake Malawi – “Lucy”

Step into it while you can
I swear it’s like I blinked and I just missed the time for action
One foot in the door, boy you blew your chance
Were you serious thinking you’re the one?

Didn’t see you up and leave
I was sitting here for hours wondering how I could approach you
Now I’m watching pretty girls walk down the street
So mysterious (I) can only think of one

Lucy, don’t you wanna think about it?
Are you gonna come around now that you are in a song?
Lucy, never really got around to saying what’s on my mind
Loving you is all I want

Lucy!
Fall in love with me like this, like this
Fall in love with me like this
Don’t turn your back on me like this
I still see you wearing your white dress
Lucy!

Do you always make everyone fall in love with you like this
Am I just another guy to you?
Have you considered becoming an actress?

Lucy, don’t you wanna think about it?
Are you gonna come around now that you are in a song?
Lucy, never really got around to saying what’s on my mind
Loving you is all I want

Lucy!
Fall in love with me like this, like this
Fall in love with me like this
Don’t turn your back on me like this
I still see you wearing your white dress
Lucy!

All the words were weighing down
Like something heavy on my chest
When you sat down next to me in that white dress
Got the feeling that I just I just had to tell you something…

Lucy!
Fall in love with me like this, like this
Fall in love with me like this
Don’t turn your back on me like this
I still see you wearing your white dress
Lucy!

You don’t even know me, you don’t even know me
We never really got a chance to talk
What do we do about it?
What do we do about it?

Step into it while you can
I swear it’s like I blinked and I just missed the time for action

I love it so much. It reminds me of myself being in love with a german singer when beeing in my teens. God, it is so true. No one has not made such an exact description of it in a music video yet which makes it so personal for me. Thank you. My Best band keep surprising me!

I’ve been waiting for this song since they announced their collaboration with Jowst, and now I’ve got to say this is just genius, everything about this! It’s incredible how they can find inspiration for songs in literally anything! The video is so hilarious, I watched it many times and every time it made me laugh! I spotted the Lucy Ayoub cardboard fugure ever since the images from the first ESC 2019 repetitions. Then I saw it on those photos, videos and stories from Lake Malawi’s instagram, but my thought was rather “who let them take her?”, it didn’t even popped… Read more »
