Last year, after a 12-year break from the contest, Junior Eurovision powerhouse Spain proved it still had it. Melani Garcia‘s poperatic smash hit “Marte” finished on the podium during a fairly competitive year. Now rumours and murmurs abound about who will continue Spain’s trajectory in the Junior event. One of the name’s we’re hearing the most? Melani herself.

In a recent interview with FormulaTV, the Spanish performer focused on her newest single, the summery “Grita Conmigo”, and the making of the music video. But at one point the question about the search for her successor came up (around the 16 minute mark in the interview).

When asked about her interest in returning to Junior Eurovision 2020 to announce the points for Spain, she rather curiously replied: “I’ll do whatever is needed. That’s all I’d say”. And when that eventually led to the question of participating again, she said she was unable to comment further.

But what about when she was asked if she would like to represent Spain for a second year in a row? “Of course! Ever since I returned from Poland, I’ve wanted to do it all over again, it’s such a cool experience. But I can’t say more than that!”

Well, one thing is certain: her new single proves that she can do more than just opera. “Grita Conmigo” is a slice of summer pop that would fit perfectly on mainstream radio.

Melani, a big favorite in her year, scored 212 points, placing third with the jury, and second in the internet voting, maintaining Spain’s strong record in the event.

What do you think? Do you think Melani could get the crown for Spain with a second showing? Let us know in the comments below!

Spain better choose Irene Gil, she is considered as one of the best The Voice Kids contestant in the world and she wants to take part to the contest. Melani can come back in 2021. Talking about The Voice Kids, I think Germany decided to begin JESC this year because they have Josefin & Mimi. And I’m very angry that my country (Belgium) doesn’t compete anymore because all our neighbours are back and we could have send Justin Degryse. This guy is a diamond. PS: Justin, Irene, Josie&Mimi are all considered as some of the best contestants in The Voice… Read more »

Edit: it won’t be the sisters for Germany but let’s see if there are good talents there. I’m sad.

It was not possible since one of the sisters is currently 15, and JESC is for kids and teens between 9 and 14.

When you watch the Spanish interview and the two guys ask her about JESC 2021 and the possibility of her return to the competition, she has to bite her lip to keep this a secret. This is so funny (it was so hard for her not to say). LOL

It would be great if Melani sings again for Spain this year, off cause with a good song !! She is an amazing singer and her song “Marte” was very beautiful.

I wouldn’t mind as long as she has a good song. I don’t think pop fits her at all. Her latest single is a bit weak.

The high notes in “Grita conmigo” are operatic pop oriented. This song proves she can do more than opera.

@Héctor – I only partially agree with you. I really like her new song and I think the pop / latino / opera style suits her great …..but ….something’s missing in this song….the song builds up but there is no peak, no climax ….you know – it is all the time on one level. Maybe it needs a musical explosion with drums, trumpets or something like that …but nothing happend. It could be sooooo damn good (Melani is awesome) but the song is only a 7/10.

There are rumors (and I will not name the source of it) that Irene Gil – the winner of The Voice Kids Spain Season 5 – teams up with Melani Garcia to form a duo. I think if that is true, these duo combined with a powerful upbeat song has a real shot to win it this year.

The countries that win Junior ESC are nor forced to host it the following year. This is because EBU doesn’t want the kids who compete to feel pressure.

Obviously, she is an amazing talent but I don’t know how well her singing translates to just pop. It is just lacking that something.
Would love to see her back but, at the same time, I’m sure Spain has other really talented kids ready to go, too.

There is a singer called Irene Gil who wants to compete in JESC and tons of fans are requesting RTVE to select her as the contestant. She won The Voice Kids Spain and is 14 years old (she wants to go because legally it’s the last year she can be chosen to compete).

Wasn’t it impossible for an artist to regurn to the contest? I know Ekaterina Ryabova competed twice for Russia, but they had to give her a special permission from EBU didn’t they?

I find it unlikely. Last time I checked, no Junior Eurovision act has competed in JESC more than once. There’s always new artists competing every single year. It’s not like Eurovision where artists can return to the competition.

Ekatarina Ryabova represented Russia in 2009 and 2011. Lerika represented Moldova in 2011 and Russia in 2012.

If she will return to Junior Eurovision this year and represent Spain, she could be the 3rd JESC artist to ever return to the competition after Katya Ryabova & Lerika.

While we’re on the topic of Junior Eurovision, please let me know when the following countries confirm participation.

* Albania
* Armenia
* Italy

…also let me know when the EBU announces a new Junior Eurovision voting system.

You don’t need to write it in every jesc related article. We are also waiting to these countries to confirm if they are going to partipicate (hopefully they will). When one of these countries confirms whether it will partipicate or not so there will be news about it and then, we will know.

If they withdraw, hopefully it’s not permanent.

They definetely need to change how online voting works, as it bastly benefits Poland and Spain because of their interest on the show, I would mantain that of voting twice (once previous to the contest and once at the end of the perfomances) and the chance to vote from 3 to 5 countries, but they should think of dividing the votes by contries like in ESC and not allowing to vote for your own country to keep things more fare. But, they should maintain that of distributinf the points of the televote proportionally, not in packs like in ESC
