Russia in Junior Eurovision 2020: Sofia Feskova “My New Day”
On 25 September, Russian broadcaster VGTRK organised a national final with eleven contestants. The winner was determined through 50% jury voting and 50% internet voting. Sofia came second in the jury vote and first in the online vote.
Sofia hails from St. Petersburg and has been singing her whole life. In kindergarten, her teacher recommended she develop her musical talents and she joined a music school aged five. Her idol is Russian singer Polina Gagarina and her dream is to share the stage with the Eurovision 2015 runner-up.
Earlier in 2020, she came second in the Junior New Wave competition. She hopes to go one better this November.
What do the “My New Day” lyrics mean?
The lyrics to “My New Day” refer to celebrating each day as it comes and knowing that good things will always come. It begins “The sun’s shadow will colour the morning, the new day will be great!”
The chorus mentions the beauty of the world and how we should embrace it: “To the clouds so soft and subtle, one step ahead, go, touch the skies”. It also describes how we should stay calm in the face of adversity, “So, facing your fears, keep calm and fly!” Many of the 2020 entries have similar themes of hope and given the difficult year, it will definitely resonate with a young audience.
According to JuniorEurovision.tv, Sofia’s favourite lyrics are “The whole world feels like home; there I’ll stay, it’s my new day”. She believes strongly in miracles and our own capability to make each day special. “This line is a call and reminder from a child for every adult: never be embarrassed to believe in miracles, create your own ‘fairy tale,’ and then your every “new day will be great!”, she says.
The music video is a bright and colourful affair. Sofia makes cute little paintings, including one of the 2020 Junior Eurovision logo. We see her share her artwork with groups of children. Sofia sings in a simple setting: in front of a blue and pink backdrop. Occasionally she swings above some billowing mist.
As the song progresses, more grandiose scenes appear. She sings in a large blue dress with a bejewelled face, accompanied by an orchestra.

To the light of stars that sparkle, |
The sun’s shadow will colour the morning. The new day will be great! I paint my life with a bright colour. I will open the sails to the wind. Miracles are near me. Believing in a fairy tale, I live, and I sing! To the light of stars that sparkle, Touch the skies! Happy is the only who could once For so many years, To the light of stars that sparkle, |

Bad song! All this hype about selection and results spoiled the impression very much. I’m not looking forward to a good place for my country.
Sofia did not take first place in the online vote, she came in second!
First place for Rutger Garecht!
This is actually more coverage than Wiwibloggs usually gives it. They have come out and given reasons why they don’t cover it in the past.

I like the song very much. Sofia has a great voice.
I really like this one actually. Liked it even more before the revamp. Out of all of the songs selected through NFs this year, Sofia has clearly been the strongest live singer. For some reason, it’s received a pretty negative reaction. Can’t just be because it’s Russia, can it?
It’s because nearly every song bar 2 was better in the national selection as well as the fact that her father apparently works at the broadcaster and there are some unconfirmed allegations of bribery. Frankly, I don’t love the song, but Sofia’s voice is great and I am rooting for her regardless.
Viewers had another favorite. The article contains incorrect data: Sofia did not win the online vote. We had a different winner.
