Cyprus’ “El Diablo” songwriting team boasts a starry array of talent. Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt is a multi-Grammy winner while Laurell Barker and Thomas Stengaard are both established Eurovision hitmakers. However, fans may be unfamiliar with one name — OXA.
But while OXA might be new to Eurovision, Eurovision is not new to OXA. In fact, in Autumn 2019, the Brazillian- born singer became a little bit of a viral sensation after auditioning for The Voice Of Germany with an unforgettable cover of Netta’s Eurovision 2018 winning entry “Toy”.
OXA covers Netta’s “Toy” on The Voice Of Germany
With vocals reminiscent of Loïc Nottet, the androgynous performer quickly had the entire audience on their feet. OXA brought more than just the song’s trademark chicken noises the stage. The performance featured an abundance of acrobatic dance moves, including cartwheels and a spectacular deathdrop. Alas, much of the this went unseen by the coaches with just one hitting their button and turning — Mark Forster.
But one coach is all you need on The Voice. OXA progressed through the battle and sing-off rounds, remaining in the competition until the semi-final.
OXA and Eurovision 2021
As revealed earlier this week, OXA is part of the songwriting team for Cyprus’ Eurovision 2021 entry “El Diablo”. The song will be performed by the Greek singer Elena Tsagrinou.
Here’s how OXA reacted to the news: “I just wanna say that is a dream come true being a co-writer of a song for entrance of Cyprus for the @eurovision 2021 , I just wanna say thank to this beautiful team that made this be real! Thank you for giving me the opportunity ! I’m growing everyday and learning with every mistake that I take ! @elenatsagkrinou_official go go go girl ! U fire !”
Aside from The Voice, OXA has also been a dancer for Jennifer Lopez’ Vegas show “Q’viva the chosen Live” and appeared in musicals all around the world, including The Lion King (Brazil), Tarzan (Germany) and Kinky Boots (Broadway).
What do you think of OXA’s “Toy” cover? Are you excited to hear “El Diablo”? Let us know below.
Oh, no way we are unfamiliar with their name! In fact, that was the only name on the list of “El Diablo” songwriters that catched my attention, as the moment I read it, I immediately asked myself if it can be THAT Oxa from the Voice of Germany? However, the next second I said “nah, it’s unlikely them…”. And now it turns out it’s actually them! Yay! They were on my wishlist for Germany’s Eurovision entry in 2020. Now as Ben Dolic is not coming back, maybe Germany even actually chose Oxa as their 2021 entry?
mark forster is polish, he is cute
So I guess hugs is a thing in Germany….. I remember the days when hugs were for everyone
What are you talking about, this is from 2019.
Right, ok. I didn’t catch that. I’m still jealous about it 😛
