Which Uku Suviste Eurovision song do you prefer?

Our series of poll battles continues. Following the cancellation of last year’s contest, the majority of the class of 2020 are back to finally get their chance on the Eurovision stage. But, as is standard Eurovision regulation, they’ve all got new songs. And the comparisons are coming in fast.

So now, we want to hear from our readers. Do you prefer the returning artists’ 2020 or 2021 songs?

Next up, we’re saying tere to Estonia and Uku Suviste. In 2020, Uku was set to fly the Estonian flag in Rotterdam with his song “What Love Is”. And in 2021, he’s heading back to Eurovision with “The Lucky One“. Two years, two songs. But which is better? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“What Love Is” (Estonia 2020)

Uku Suviste originally won the Estonian ticket to Rotterdam after winning Eesti Laul 2020, Estonia’s national selection show. His song “What Love Is” was inspired by musical theatre, and is a dramatic ode to feelings that come with discovering true love for the first time. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — scored Uku an average of 4.1/10, placing him 41st out of 41 entries.

“Uku builds a story on stage, whilst managing to keep the viewer transfixed. This isn’t an easy thing to do”, juror Deban said. “Yes, elements of this are dated, and the song in general is somewhat needlessly theatrical. However, let’s not lose sight of his compelling vocals and the undeniable hook here. “What Love Is” has a charging melody that will leave you yearning for another reprise.”

“The Lucky One” (Estonia 2021)

Unlike most returning artists, Uku did not automatically receive his comeback ticket. Instead, he had to fight his way through Eesti Laul once again. With tremendous fan support, Uku lifted the Eesti Laul trophy for a second consecutive year — making him the first artist to achieve such a fete.

“The Lucky One” shows a darker side of Uku’s discography, with lyrics about learning how to spot the red flags in a toxic relationship.

It’s funny because on the piano, “What Love Is” has a really nice melody that flows really well across the keys. However, “The Lucky One” is a much better production and is the stronger entry, despite being less nice on the piano. Do duller melodies make better productions? I wonder.
