Their Eurovision 2021 music video for “Loco Loco” was a high-energy burst of Balkan pop, replete with disco balls, crimped 80s hair and a lot of fierce moves. And while Serbia’s Eurovision 2021 act Hurricane were most definitely feeling it, they tell me they will not be copying-and-pasting for the Eurovision stage.

“It goes in a new direction,” Sanja says. “We’re not going to mirror anything from the video. There’s going to be new costumes, new scenery — it won’t be the 80s vibe that we portrayed in the video.”

But Ivana promises that there will still be plenty to look at: “There’s gonna be crazy choreography, hair, make-up, everything. It’s gonna be really crazy on stage.”

And on that stage it’ll be all about the ladies: They will not be joined by any other dancers.

Serbia: Hurricane on Eurovision 2021 staging and “Loco Loco”

The trio — who famously released “Hasta la vista” ahead of Eurovision 2020 — recently recorded their live-on-tape performance in Belgrade at the RTS studios. That was a performance in itself and is completely different from both the music video and the planned performance at Eurovision.

So what about the song itself? Sanja says she wrote the lyrics in about 15 minutes and hopes to convey the nerves and energy that come with having a crush and pursuing it.

“Nowadays it can be embarrassing for a girl to approach a man,” she says. “I’m trying to make it a normal thing. I tend to approach a man when I like him, so the song is about relaxing and being loco loco — let’s get loco loco, but not in a sexual way, in a love kind of way.”

There are, of course, two Eurovision alums in the group. Ksenija performed as a backing vocalist for her father Knez back at Eurovision 2015, while Sanja represented Serbia all on her own at Eurovision 2016, making the grand final. Ksenija says she was incredibly nervous at the time, but remembers it as the best experience of her life. You can see her in the background of this red carpet interview with her father.

The trio — among the biggest girl groups to come out of the Balkans in recent memory — think their magic comes partly from their unique styles.

“The three of us are so different, but together we have great energy,” Ksenija says.

That also comes through in their favourite songs at Eurovision 2021. While all of the ladies adore Croatia’s Albina, they each have different faves. Sanja is living for Italy, Ukraine and Finland; Ksenija is partial to Italy and Switzerland; and Ivana adores Greece and San Marino.

Are you loving the group’s energy and circle of sisterhood as much as we are? Do you think they are headed to the final? Let us know in the comments box below!

The song is growing on me and i appreciate it for what it is. I still prefer Hasta La Vista though.

I love Sanja, she’s crazy talented!

No dancers? Hmm i didn’t expect that but i guess they know what they’re doing.

Without a doubt, this is a qualifier from the public and diaspora will massively help.

I had some doubts about this song but now I really like it. Just still wondering if the chorus is too repetitive (sam-sam-sam, lom-lom-lom ….).

On the other hand, it might make it easier for non Serbs to grasp and therefore is more catchy for them? Might be a benefit as well as a hindrance.

I really think they should have brought in a real songwriter to help rather than took what Sanja wrote in 15 minutes, as she says in the interview.

In a year where pre-recorded vocals are allowed you’d think upbeat songs would take the opportunity and put as many as dancers as possible. Even if they’re 3, I hope the stage doesn’t swallow them and the performance ends up a bit underwhelming because the song isn’t gonna resonate for a lot of people outside the Balkan region. They may stage something great though, good luck!

I agree. Serbia never puts on much of a dance show compared to other countries.

I just watched the interview Sanja and Ivana (without Ksenia) had tonight on the Eurovision Hub Youtube channel. It was a FIRE. Besides many other random things, they also talked a little bit more about their preparation process and what to expect from them in May.

Its really nice how inclusive Eurovision fanbase is. You can be any sexuality, any race, any weight, any disability and they will accept you. As long as you are not beautiful Serbian women with plastic surgery people will not discriminate you.

Since they are from Serbia, they could be referring to the situation in Serbia and perhaps something the three of them have experienced/seen. 🙂

I think SOME women do think it’s embarrassing (although I am pretty sure she wanted to say that some women are often shy in that kind of situations), but it has nothing to do with Serbian mentality. After all, it’s their song and they are probably speaking from their experience and people should not make generalizations over the nation of 7 million people.

I am a heterosexual woman and I don’t have the balls to approach a man and many others of my beautiful friends are too shy to approach a guy as well. I think it is just how most women are.

It isn’t just embarassment, here in Serbia it is “expected” of the man to approach the woman, not the other way around… Aside of many other things, toxic gender “roles” when it comes to relationships and dating are still a huge part of our lives.

i don’t see it qualifying as it is, it would be a noisy colorful experience, but we’ve seen such examples in the past doing not well.. the entry in general lacks sophistication and taste.. it’s robust, rough material.. I don’t see credible enough reasons why this would pass..

I think Serbia will struggle to qualify. For real. I personally don’t see them qualifying but let me elaborate before y’all start hating on me. This song is not necessarily catchy, its just loud. And you all have soft spot for them. But rationally thinking you all have to remember that Eurovision has much wider audience than online blogs, and real results always shift and then people on here are like but how, what… Juries have history of ignoring songs like this, and Serbia doesn’t have countries in this Semi Final that usually votes for them no matter what send.… Read more »

It doesn’t matter what you say, they’ll hate you just for daring to say they might not qualify. But just as people have the right to say whatever they want, they also have the right to upvote or downvote whatever they agree or disagree with. Not a big deal.
However, if somebody wants to give constructive criticism, they should certainly message the girls on Instagram, because they most likely won’t read our comments.

But they’re not just downvoting because they disagree. On Twitter and YouTube, their fans really come at people who dare to say something Hurricane does isn’t perfect. It’s come to the point where I and a few people I know (I can’t speak for others) actually avoid commenting on anything Hurricane-related because we know how their fans will react. They’re not replying to disagree or to have a decent argument/discussion about it, most of them will attack you for saying anything. And yes, artists do read comments on social media and forums. Ok, but I think it would be great if people with constructive criticism send them direct messages, because we don’t know that they indeed read the comments. A Serbian friend of mine told me that the members of Hurricane said that they rarely read comments. However, they appreciate when somebody sends them constructive criticisms on Instagram. From my experience, those who attack are very often teenagers (or children in my eyes), so I hope you don’t take those comments serious! More “mature” population in Serbia and the Balkan region is not very interested in Eurovision… Fans are there to support… Read more »

It still should be ok to say something that is constructive criticism whether the artist reads it or not, though. People are discussing all entries, say what they like and what they don’t…so why should it be a problem to talk about Hurricane the same way? It’s not even that their attitude is that we should only speak positive of all entries for the sake of the positive-only mood around the contest…they feel free to talk negative of other entries but once someone says they don’t like something about Loco Loco, then they attack the author verbally (sometimes add threatening… Read more »

Sure, but you mentioned that the girls could benefit from our constructive criticism, so I just said that it would be better to send them direct messages.

The thing is that nobody knows who Euterpa or Teddi is, so I really hope you don’t feel threatened. I don’t take such comments seriously, because nobody knows who Steven is or even if it’s my real name.

However, it makes me really sad that there are people who still try to threaten others and who are unable to peacefully argue with others.

Yeah, I meant it in a way that saying something negative is not necessarily bad. People shouldn’t be attacked for simply saying they don’t like something. And when one has experienced being attacked by their fans, then downvoting of such comments appears practically passive-aggressive. That’s true, but it still wasn’t pleasant to see that. I honestly felt at that moment (and on a few other occasions) like I just want this Eurovision season to end as soon as possible so Serbia has a new representative and I don’t have to deal with their fans anymore. Sad, but true. Thank you… Read more »

You are basically comparing Eleni’s live performance (which was outstanding btw) with Hurricane’s non existing live performance of Loco Loco. In addition, you state that their song is not “completely done song,” and “more of a scratch” which isn’t a well-supported argument but rather your personal opinion that people should appreciate but that they do not need to take seriously. Although I think it is inappropriate to compare Eleni’s and Hurricane’s song as they don’t fit within the same genre, MANY people were not at all optimistic about her song prior to the rehearsals. In fact, if you read comment… Read more »

Why to insert nonesense phrases in Spanish, Greek and French? This is sooo meh. And this will not add 10 places upwards, but 10 places downwards. The complete Serbian version with the repetitive phrase ”Loco-Loco” and the ”One two girls come on” is enough. There is no need for more languages at all. Serbian language is beautiful itself

“They won’t have any dancers”

The most exciting thing for me about watching Eurovision is looking at the staging concept. Hurricane is just as K-pop-inspired as they can be, and my favorite subgenre of Asian pop is an ever-evolving genre. What concept will Hurricane adopt for their staging? Soldier-like? Just plain girl crush with techno suits? Let’s wait and see ’cause I’m excited.

I think that “Eurovision”‘s obsession with dancers to make spectacular staging is pretty strange. I mean, we have a lot of examples of people winning without it. Why somebody still thinks it’s so important? Also, in my opinion, this cliché hurts contest’s staging, ‘cuz instead of making smth creative artists just use dancers. I like Hurricane’s decision.

It’s kinda logical that dancers are used for staging in uptempo songs though. In hurricane’s case it isn’t logical because they already are a 4 head girl group who can perform a choreography themselves.

It’s not as easy as seems. Dancing and singing at the same time is hard thing to do, ‘cuz of a structure of human breathing system, so , though I enjoy their decision, they chose not the easiest way. Also, using dancers on the contest isn’t always logical. There are a lot of ways to present uptempo song in different way. ( look at shock-rockers , for example, they make drive tracks , but present ’em in other way.) Using dancers everywhere kills creativity.

I feel like they will kind of do their “Hasta La Vista” staging, but with more attitude in their face, and maybe a man on stage (kind of like Beta Sudar’s performance from Dora 2021). Overall, very excited to see what they come up with.
