Which VICTORIA song do you prefer?

Following the cancellation of Eurovision last year, the majority of the class of 2020 received the comeback ticket to sing again at Eurovision 2021. A massive 26 artists will return to represent their countries at Eurovision 2021. But as per the standard Eurovision rules, they’ve all got new songs.

Thus, comparisons are inevitable. So, we want to hear from our readers. We’re running a series of polls to ask — do you prefer the returning acts’ 2020 or 2021 songs?

Next up, we want to hear your opinions on Bulgaria. Last year, VICTORIA was internally selected to sing “Tears Getting Sober” at Eurovision. This year, she’ll sing “Growing Up Is Getting Old” for her country in Rotterdam. Two years, two tracks. But which is your favourite? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“Tears Getting Sober” (Bulgaria 2020)

In 2020, VICTORIA was the bookmakers’ favourite to win Eurovision and bring Bulgaria their first song contest victory. Her entry “Tears Getting Sober” was a poetic fantasy-esque ballad about recovering from the past traumas of a relationship turned sour. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — awarded VICTORIA an impressive 7.75/10.

“Production team Symphonix and VICTORIA have forged a great collaboration here”, noted wiwiblogger Deban. “Qualification in any year with this song would have been certain, but in 2020, it would’ve definitely peaked in the top five. What I love the most about this entry is that I keep finding new reasons to love it more. Bravo!”

“Growing Up Is Getting Old” (Bulgaria 2021)

In 2021, VICTORIA and her team at BNT internally selected “Growing Up Is Getting Old” for Eurovision 2021 out of a pool of six songs — most of them taken from VICTORIA’s EP a little dramatic.

It’s lighter in tone to her 2020 track, and sees the singer look to the future as she overcomes anxieties. She’s also rocking a brand new look, inspired by 1940s wartime fashion.

Poll battle – Bulgaria: Which VICTORIA song is your favourite?

As always, you can only vote once, so make it count. And in this poll, you can only vote for one song. Be decisive! We know you can do it.

[polldaddy poll=10774754]

Which song did you vote for? How does “Growing Up Is Getting Old” compare to “Tears Getting Sober”? Sound off in the comments below.

The poll is titled “Which song (of the two) is your favourite”. So, I answered that between the two of them I prefer last year’s song even though none of them is sth I’d listen to. I answer in every poll, even about songs that leave me indifferent. That’s the point. And what about the downvotes? One should respect the opinions of others.

I may have voted for last year’s song but honestly I’m growing to love GUIGO equally much. There’s something with the climax of it that’s so beautiful yet haunting. I’m excited to see what it will look like on stage because I think it can be a real goosebump moment that can generate a lot of votes.

Last year was better. It was my 6th favorite. This year her song is my 13th favorite.

I adore both, but I voted GUIGO, my personal winner this year. It has such a lovely build-up, and the lyrics are quite relatable. It honestly made me emotional and was very cathartic when I heard it the first time. If the emotion hits the audience the same way, I could see this doing very well with the televote and be a candidate for winner.

That’s not to say TGS is bad, though. It was my “song of the quarantine” and I love listening to it. It’s my 3rd place of 2020.

I think both are fantastic songs and she has been my second place both times (behind medo de sentir and voy a quedarme). I think that tgs is just slightly better musically but that growing up is getting old has a better and more relatable message. I really don’t know which one I’d say is better.

I really liked ‘Tears getting sober’ but I absolutely love ‘Growing up is getting old’. Relatable lyrics, haunting melody and Victoria’s mesmerising vocals. I’m pretty confident that Bulgaria will end up very high in the final ranking and they do have a chance for victory, especially with so many uptempo songs this year.

Can’t believe people are sleeping on such a beautiful song this year… Don’t be sure about this will get a bad result because this year is like 2014 and there is no certain winner. This can still win , like Amar Pelos Dois. It has potential to create an atmosphere and ”that moment”

Yes but in Salvador Sobrals case it was genuine magic. Here it is like a professional singer with an international team. This lacks the genuine feel and is overproduced.

Yes, whatever. I meant the same thing: ‘genuine magic’ or atmosphere if you prefer. That’s what I feel when I’m listening to Victoria’s song, it creates an atmosphere. I don’t feel any ‘overproduction’ in it like Helene wrote.

Everyone is entitled to its opinion but I think from what I have seen in Eurovision the last years that music that is mostly produced by the artist themselves is rewarded the most by the audience as well as music that is nationally produced. Bulgaria has for some years used Swedish songwriters and teams and I am not sure the audience will reward that. The same goes for Malta and Cyprus. Switzerland also are going more international. This year they used the former winner. I think it won’t be winning either. Overproduced does not have to be uptempo but also… Read more »

That’s your opinion, and I respect it. Personnally, I don’t think that the audience did really care about whether the last Eurovision winning songs were written by the artists themselves or not. As a viewer, you don’t really pay attention to it. You care the most about the moment, what is currently brung on stage. The interpretation of the artist, the staging etc. Like with Emmelie de Forest, Conchita Würst, Måns Zelmmerlöw and Salvador Sobral, who have not been involved in the songwriting of their songs. The fact that the two last winners co-created their songs is a coincidence for… Read more »

Well in Salvador’s case it is a genuine work by him and his sister. Ni international team here. Also last winner Duncan was very much involved and invested in the song itself. It was something the audience liked. Netta and emmelie were that as well. I think Emmelie wrote the song herself. . It is not my favorite so I am not sure. However i dont think it was any international team behind it. The others are like Måns and Conchita had noventy as acts all over were also really strong acts with carisma. So I think that either one… Read more »

I agree this is mainly subjective and personal feelings.
It will also depend on what national commentators can say. For Salvador I remember the commentator explained the background of the song which helped to create “magic” and “atmosphere”.
Personnaly I really like the song and Victoria. It has big potential to create momentum. However I hope that she will do smthg different from the videoclip as fmpov it was too fake and too far away from her to be sincere. She is young and playing the 20th century card is a bit irrelevant.

You think, but I checked up from my side. I’m not the kind of person that is stating things without verifying its sources. Luisa Sobral is the only one credited for the creation of ‘Amar Pelos Dois’. Same with ‘Only Teardrops’. Emmelie isn’t credited on its songwriting.

It’s a matter of perception, but I don’t think that Victoria lacks charisma. She’s beautiful and charming. She absolutely doesn’t need to have the charisma of Conchita in order to win Eurovision. She just needs to be true to herself.

Helene

Well I was right wasn’t I. They did the songs themselves in their own countries. Salvador’s sister is the family and really close. You are thus overlooking my point. It is in this case with this song made by an international team that gives a feeling of overproduction (not made by her or her family) she needs a very strong performance to win with something extra. Conchita had that. To be a nice girl with a nice professional song is not enough to win this competition.

Oh, yes, excuse me, you’re right. I was focused on that part of your comment ‘ I think from what I have seen in Eurovision the last years that music that is mostly produced by the artist themselves is rewarded the most by the audience’ and I overlooked that last part ‘as well as music that is nationally produced’. But then, I don’t get why Bulgaria can’t be a winner to you if I follow your reasoning. You explained that artists that self-penned their songs seemed to be rewarded by the audience. Like I wrote on a past comment, Victoria… Read more »

”Growing Up Is Getting Old” – Written by Victoria Georgieva, Maya Nalani, Helena Larsson, Oliver Björkvall / The Bulgarian artist says about the songwriting process of ”Growing Up Is Getting Old”: “This is one of the first songs I wrote back in 2019 and it all started with the idea I had for the phrase “growing up is getting old”. I think those Swedes had a lot to do with the song. They often put in the artist so that it will look like they actually are in charge. I don’t think it is her song completely.,

I googled a bit and the song was written together with the Swedes in a “camp” where they met to make music for Eurovision in 2019. She was not doing it by herself. So they created it together with the purpose to make a song for Eurovision. This is why it feels so constructed.

Clearly, you have a bone to pick with Swedish musicians. What’s the t ? Is that a bad thing to create a song in order to compete for Eurovision ? Obviously not. A lot of excellent songs had been written with the spirit of competing at Eurovision. It’s not something to be ashamed of. So I assume and feel that with the Bulgarian entry, you have a problem with Swedish composers. And your ‘ This is why it feels so constructed’ comment. Girl, really ? It’s a song, so it obviously needed to be ‘constructed’ to exist. What do you… Read more »

Ellen I get your point, I agree, but unfortunately what you call “the kind of eurofan” that is Doris is unfortunately the case for many many extrem eurofans, they have a favourite, then they hate and underrate and put down the others by all the vicious ways they can because they feel threated for their big favourite, it’s classical, usual, and each years the same thing. Look at the youtube rankings and reactions, the reactors and reviewers are very often biased, youtube and twitter’s tops and voting simulations are good illustrations. As an eurofan, I’m ashamed by this kind of people. How can one be that hateful and obstinate to trash the other countries entries just to make its personnal favourites sounding the best and most loved ? That’s totally unfair, biased, delusional and stupid. There’s nothing else to say. Hopefully some negative comments here are very constructive and fair, it helps a lot to bring back real and open debates. And I respect that a lot.

Both are really beautiful. It’s hard to decide. Probably TGS has a bit of a more immediate melody, but GUIGO is lovely too, when you get into the atmosphere. Both song have very strong lyrics. For me, GUIGO’s lyrics perhaps speak to even more. I’d call it this year’s Grow, in terms of introspection and depth.

I mean, different tastes and all, but if I was not a big fan of a song in my top ten, I’d just call it an exceptionally abysmal year. 😉 Closest thing for me would be 2004 and 2006, but even then, term “like” would still likely apply to all of my top 10. 😉

I guess I use “big fan” as a relative term when it comes to favourites. Like I say I’m not a big fan of “Euphoria”….but it’s still in my top ten for 2012. Not being a big fan is relative to how most other people feel about it.

Thanks for explaining! 🙂 I was just curious, but it totally makes sense. Placings and ratings are totally personal and relative. Year qualities also differ and being 7th, 13th or 26th is relative towards the whole context. It took me some time to love Euphoria. At first, I just respected it. Believe it or not, it used to be my 14th back in 2012. Now, it’s 3rd, but it took it some time. PS. Yeah, feeling an entry is relatively overrated by the fandom can totally re-phrase the way one talks about the song. For example, I tend to speak… Read more »
