Which The Roop Eurovision song is your favourite?

Following the cancellation of Eurovision last year, the majority of the class of 2020 received the comeback ticket to sing again at Eurovision 2021. A massive 26 artists will return to represent their countries at Eurovision 2021. But as per the standard Eurovision rules, they’ve all got new songs.

Thus, comparisons to their previous entries are inevitable. So, we want to hear from our readers. We’re running a series of polls to ask — do you prefer the returning artists’ 2020 or 2021 songs?

Today, we’re shining a light on Lithuania. In 2020, The Roop were set to take “On Fire” to Rotterdam. This year, they’ll be singing “Discotheque” at Eurovision 2021. But which song is your favourite? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“On Fire” (Lithuania 2020)

The Roop received the ticket to Eurovision 2020 after convincingly winning Lithuania’s Pabandom iš naujo! 2020. Their quirky and fun entry “On Fire” lit a flame amongst fans and quickly became a favourite – they even won our inaugural wiwibloggs scoreboard.

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — awarded “On Fire” an average score of 7.85 out of 10. Here’s what wiwiblogger Luis had to say about the song in his review:

““On Fire” is such a perfect mix of fun and serious pop. Yes, it makes you smile, but there’s no way you can take this as a camp entry. The Roop execute this perfectly, and it’s impressive to watch the performance and notice how every single detail is thought out. This should become a new dictionary entry for the word “enjoyable”.”

“Discoteque” (Lithuania 2021)

Although they’ll be able to return to Eurovision 2021, The Roop weren’t automatically selected by Lithuanian broadcaster LRT. Instead, they had to go through Pabandom iš naujo! once again, though they were given a direct spot in the grand final. Thankfully, the group came out on top once again with their new song “Discoteque”.

“Discoteque” is another upbeat offering, but has a slightly darker feel to it. Lyrically, The Roop encourage listeners to accept themselves for the way they are.

Poll battle — Lithuania: Which The Roop entry do you prefer?

In this poll, you can only vote for one song — so choose wisely. And as always, you can only vote once. Let the battle commence!

Look, I agree with most of you in the comments saying that “On Fire” is more original and catchy than Discoteque, though I think the worst think we could do to the Roop and any other returnee is compare their song this year with last year’s one.

That seems to happen with pretty much every returning artist, like Daði or Gjon. I don’t say that’s wrong but it shouldn’t affect our opinions on their songs in ESC 2021.

“On fire” was a potential winner. “Discotheque” could potentially end up top 10.

I like “On fire” better, but both songs are a bop, plus the singer has an amazing charisma. They’re in my top 5 and I’m sure they will do well at this year’s ESC.

On Fire was so much better for me and it was a big contender for the win.

On Fire was a winner song, but Discoteque… not so much. On Fire had everything, good song, odd but not too odd performance, message, melody. It would probably be Top 5 or win, Discoteque is just too messy and it’s not memorable. Will probably qualify and end up somewhere 15-25.

Not a huge fan of either but definitely find the chorus of On Fire really uplifting and dance inducing.

Maybe she could participate in next year’s national finals. We’ll see.

Both songs are incredible and it’s a very hard choice, but ultimately I chose Discoteque. I think the whole package of the 2021 entry is just a tiny bit more accessible and therefore memorable, but On Fire is amazing as well. I really hope Lithuania can beat their 2006 record this year.

Ooh this is a toughie for me. I LOVED on fire last year. It was one of the stand out songs which could have easily battled for pole position at eurovision 2020. The roop came back in 2021 with discoteque which I loved instantly. They appear to have grown as a band, which I know only us in the fandom will see but the song was so relateable about dancing alone in your kitchen without having to mention the dreaded C word. A feel good song for lockdown. I think it’s the better song of the two but I think… Read more »

On fire was great
Discoteque annoys the heck out of me and looks silly. This is not going to do as people expect

On fire was in it to win it, this one may not even reach top10.

No matter the opinion which song is better, the previous one was indeed winning tipped, which meant they had everything to lose proposing their next song. And they managed to send a pretty equally good song this year! You gotta give them credit for that.

About « everything to lose »,I think The ROOP had a better comeback than Dadi.

Both songs are great but I felt something really special with the one from 2020. On Fire was my favorite last year, Discoteque is in my top 5.

I don’t think you can compare them. It’s the same style of The Roop, only last year it looked new and distinctive to everyone, and this year everyone is already used to it. That’s why last year’s song seems to be better. I hope that most Eurovision viewers will not have heard of On Fire and will be able to judge objectively.

I think that is a good point that a lot of voters will not have heard ‘On Fire’ so Discoteque will appear to be original and more intriguing and quirky. Therefore I think it will do as well as ‘On Fire’ would have done. They are very similar songs. I personally prefer Discoteque.

Discoteque is obviously superior but it definetely won’t have the appeal On fire had.

This is my opinion, too.
They’re both good…but “On Fire” was a top 15 song for me, personally. “Discoteque” is probably just outside the top five.

Although I still like Discoteque, I think On fire had this artistic quirkiness that made it special. Discoteque sounds much more mainstream to me and because of that it has a little less winner potential in my eyes.

“On Fire” captivated me instantly whereas “Discoteque” is more of a gradual grower. I slightly prefer “On Fire”.
