OGAE Poll 2021: Hungary gives 12 points to Switzerland

Eurovision 2021 will see 13 male solo singers take to the stage of the Rotterdam Ahoy arena. These men are bringing a variety of songs to the contest this year, from ballads, to pop, to soul and more.

They’re all hoping to follow in Duncan Laurence’s footsteps, who was the last male solo singer to win Eurovision in 2019.

We asked you to vote for your favourite of these 13 talented men. After counting a total of 7,059 votes, we now have a result…

Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears is your favourite male solo singer of Eurovision 2021

The gold medal in this poll is awarded to Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears. His entry “Tout l’univers” won by quite a large margin, picking up 2,097 votes – that’s 29.71% of the total.

Gjon’s Tears has remained a steady favourite since the release of his Eurovision 2021 song. The Swiss star sits in the top three with the bookies and is also currently leading the OGAE fan vote.

He’s also clearly a favourite with our readers, as they awarded him over 1,300 votes more than the poll runner-up.

Speaking of the runner-up, the silver medal goes to Tusse from Sweden. His song “Voices” earned 721 votes (10.21% of the total). Tusse won Sweden’s prestigious Melodifestivalen on his first attempt, and he’ll be aiming to continue the country’s strong set of recent results at Eurovision.

The bronze medal goes to the United Kingdom’s James Newman. The British singer-songwriter is bringing the fire with his upbeat song “Embers”, which received 653 votes (9.25%). While the UK has not had the best results at the contest over the past decade, it seems our readers see James Newman as a favourite amongst these 13 gentleman at least – perhaps the UK’s journey up the scoreboard begins here.

Rounding out the top five are Spain’s Blas Cantó and Norway’s TIX. Both men are bringing ballads to Eurovision 2021, but with a slightly different flavour.

Blas and TIX were the only other acts in the poll to be awarded more than 500 votes.

Full results: Who is your favourite male solo singer of Eurovision 2021?

  1. Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears – “Tout l’univers” – 29.71%  (2,097 votes)
  2. Sweden’s Tusse – “Voices” – 10.21%  (721 votes)
  3. United Kingdom’s James Newman – “Embers” – 9.25%  (653 votes)
  4. Spain’s Blas Cantó – “Voy a quedarme” – 8.33%  (588 votes)
  5. Norway’s TIX – “Fallen Angel” – 7.55%  (533 votes)
  6. Czech Republic’s Benny Cristo – “Omaga” – 6.8%  (480 votes)
  7. Germany’s Jendrik – “I Don’t Feel Hate” – 6.43%  (454 votes)
  8. Estonia’s Uku Suviste – “The Lucky One” – 6.11%  (431 votes)
  9. Netherlands’ Jeangu Macrooy – “Birth of a New Age” – 4.8%  (339 votes)
  10. Poland’s Rafal – “The Ride” – 3.09%  (218 votes)
  11. Austria’s Vincent Bueno – “Amen” – 2.97%  (210 votes)
  12. North Macedonia’s Vasil – “Here I stand” – 2.41%  (170 votes)
  13. Georgia’s Tornike Kipiani – “You” – 2.34%  (165 votes)

Total Votes: 7,059

What do you make of these results? Do you think any of these male solo singers will go on to win Eurovision 2021? Let us know in the comments below!

Ok here’s my problem with switzerland this year. Don’t get me wrong the song is good. But I really don’t want this to win because I would hate to see something similar to duncan laurence arcade winning again. If arcade had not won in 2019, I would be fine with switzerland winning this year. But since arcade won, I’m just looking for something different…

Can’t people see how formulaic this type of song that Switzerland brings this year is, or are they only able to detect genericness in dance pop? It is so boring with these double standards.

Gjon is 100% my favourite singer this year, his voice is exquisite and I love his sensitive quirky personality. He a handsome lad too, he has the lot.

I’m surprised that James is in 3rd, and I think that’s great. Embers is such a nice track, and I hope the UK will do decently in the final! Good luck to you Brits out there! 🙂

I can say that Gjon has right now my favourite song in the whole ESC and I wouldn’t mind if he won also, even though I have a really strong feeling since February that Barbara will win in the end. Good luck to everyone anyways

Because you are waiting only for Eurovision to dance and shake your booty…..so basically once a year…. you must be living a very exciting life too then…… Eurovision is not a contest for who has the most upbeat and danceable song, you’re in the wrong place, however this year you have plenty plenty of uptempo songs so enjoy them, dance on them as much as you can, nobody prevents you to do that and let the others who like emotional and deeper songs enjoying this kind of music too as much as you like El Diablo, is it possible for… Read more »

Well, Gurl are Gjon and Barbara songs to “shake” my booty? By the way, I prefer emotional songs much more than bops.

So you’re just mistaking me with an “El Diablo” filthy fan.

If Stefanos had actually a duet with Stefania lol she would hit those high notes and he would hit balls with his racquet. What a fantastic show then. And for sure in that case they would finish in the same position with Tsitsipas in ATP lol

Hahaha! I would, if possible: 1. Read the same book as Gjon’s Tears and share our insights. 2. Talk to Tusse about our favourite school subjects. 3. Hang out with James Richard Newman the Great and talk about music and “The Brief”. 4. Ask Blas to teach me sing “Voy a quedarme”. 5. Sing to TIX “Ut av mørket” to show him how much I *love* his song (I would cry, definitely!). 6. Party with Benny in a club; guaranteed fun! 7. Exchange crafts with Jendrik – see the ukelele covered in rhinestones. 8. Stare into Uku’s blue eyes and… Read more »

Cute list, Una 🙂

I think if I could choose just three of those, I’d take 3. hanging out at home with James Newman, 6. partying with Benny, 7. exchanging crafts with Jendrik (I can already picture all the fancy dress items. Better yet, perhaps we can combine all three and take Jendrik’s fancy dress box and ukelele to the house party with James and Benny.

Still doesn’t give you the right to be so arrogant, and think you are the only person that matters out there. Great that you do that Indian head massage thing, and that’s completely besides the point of what the whole discussion is. If you have any shred of decency, you should take the time to reflect on your toxicity and use it to become a better person as a whole. I can sort of see the resemblance, given the same songwriter (Wouter Hardy) played a role in creating both Arcade AND Tout L’Univers. However, several differences make the two entries very distinguishable, and language isn’t the only one. Normally when two songs really are similar, most people start identifying patterns in the chord structure and melodic similarities. A much bigger case would be with Cyprus, but that’s another story. While it IS true that both Duncan and Gjon’s Tears make use of a falsetto during the chorus, they use a different chord structure. I checked for a while to see… Read more »
