She’s currently touring Europe and recently made a stop in Italy — home of the Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin. But France’s Barbara Pravi didn’t have time to stop and admire the scenery. In between two planes and trains, she released “L’homme et l’oiseau”, a hymn to freedom and a bird that can never be captured.

The title translates to “The man and the bird” and nods to the animal, both mystical and free, that Barbara regularly refers to in her songs and stage productions. Following her Eurovision song “Voila” and its follow-up “Le jour se lève”, “L’homme et l’oiseau” completes a three-part triptych, whose music videos comprise a short film.

Barbara Pravi releases ‘L’homme et l’oiseau”

As her public is used to by now, Barbara has stirred both curiosity and impatience by sharing a teaser with a cinematographic aesthetic directed by Gianluca Matarrese. Between power and fragility, the young singer can be seen performing contemporary choreography in the arms of dancer and model LaMichael Leonard Jr. In a close-up, her eyes are misty with emotion.

“Man and Bird is the end of the story. It is the dream that mixes with reality. It is the bird that is never captured. It is the man of love who does not really exist.”

Designed to complement each other and work together, the three songs in the triptych are about a mental and spiritual journey. From darkness to light comes liberation and rebirth. This is what the whole short film will imply to the viewers.

In a long Instagram post, Barbaba revealed the origin of the three-song project. The idea made sense in September 2020, even before the singer had the idea to run for Eurovision. The short film was intended to showcase her first ever album arranged by Jérémie Arcache.

“I asked three directors to put these tunes into images — that every end of one is the beginning of the next. Like an infinite dance, a loop.”

Among other things, we learn that the recordings took place in January at the Bay of the Somme in France, the day before the final of the national Eurovision France section. Barbara once again proves she is a workaholic.

In parallel, Barbara recently announced twelve more concert dates from Belgium to Ireland, including a special date at Cadogan Hall in London. Her tour will again take her to the Netherlands where she was supported and acclaimed by the Dutch Eurovision audience.

This is clearly a love song but very different from “Le jour se lève” (where she sings about the strong feelings she has for her new lover). It’s more about falling in love with someone you can’t conquer because they are seducers flying to one person to another. The lyrics are really poetic and brilliant. Here is my English translation of the song: I see them flapping wings These swallows flying around you Trying to find themselves in your look But they will never have your love Light attracts them Just like half-locked hearts such as yours My love tell… Read more »

When it’s done by a competent singer-songwriter, chanson is very good. Barbara Pravi is not competent…she’s LEGENDARY.
