Let the music play…and the music videos too! The OGAE Video Contest 2021 has arrived and with it the chance to feast your eyes and ears on some of the hottest pop around the world. For the uninitiated, this is a virtual event held annually between the numerous OGAE branches. It’s similar to the OGAE Song Contest, but the emphasis is on music videos.

This year’s edition is being hosted by Sweden. It won last year’s contest thanks to Agnes and her work “Fingers Crossed” — a mystical video that dove into the struggle between the sun and the moon.

The contest aims to highlight the visual aspects of songs, namely their music videos, as well as promote national music and diversity. Previous winners have included Myléne Farmer, Stromae, Via Gra, Coldplay, LOBODA and Loïc Nottet.

While the contest isn’t restricted to Eurovision acts, there are still Eurovision stars who have won the nomination from their country’s OGAE group.

Among the Eurovision alums you’ll instantly recognise are Eleni Foureira, Lozano, Hovig, and Iveta Mukuchyan. The class of 2021 is represented by Albina, chosen by OGAE Croatia for her summer single “La La Love”. We’re also loving that Russia has gone for “Moustache” — a song that features their Eurovision 2020 act Little Big alongside Eurovision 2018 winner Netta Barzilai from Israel.

Eurofans will also be sending love to some national final favourites including Anis Don Demina, Brooke, NEEC and Achille Lauro.

I would have preferred a full Belgian act for Belgium, but it’s also pretty common Eurovision practice. Cyprus hasn’t sent a Cypriot artist in YEARS, Azerbaijan has literally never sent a song written by an Azeri, and tons of countries buy their song from Sweden every year. And I’m talking about the real contest here, not this OGAE thing that no one cares about.

I love the song, but the video is too like Goldfrapp.

But … what could possibly be wrong about imitating Goldfrapp? ‘Train’ was one of the best songs of this century.

There’s nothing wrong with Goldfrapp, just give them the prize – not Kylie.

Ah, okay, I see. Yeah, that’s a good point.

At first listen, it isn’t anything noteworthy. But it’s really got this special quality that, with each new spin, it just keeps getting better and better.

Also, I just love that Kylie’s music appears to mature with her age. It’s nowhere near the Madonna disgrace of trying to act like a 20 year old while heading towards your 70th birthday.

Madonna is 63, and confident in enough in her body to act however she wants. There’s nothing disgraceful in that.

Sure, she’s free to do whatever pleases her. But at some point, it’s getting a bit ridiculous and just unnecessarily hurts her legacy. I think she’d be well advised to tone it down a little. She should rather head in the direction of songs like ‘Nothing fails’ or ‘Miles away’, instead of singing stuff like ‘*****, I’m Madonna’. And perhaps just grab an acoustic guitar and simply sing, instead of trying all this overblown extravaganza.

Her legacy is about teaching people not to conform, to be themselves. There’s no reason for that to stop just because she’s in her sixties.

Well … her own son would beg to differ.

Also … I don’t mean to disrespect her, but when has she ever been herself? She basically invented the concept of reinventing one’s persona with each new album.

None of that changes the fact that 63-year-old women can wear what they like. What exactly is disgraceful about that?

Her own sake is the reason she should start to act her age. Else she inevitably keeps on becoming a laughing stock. And that’s simply a shame for someone with such merits.

And as I’ve written before: she can do whatever she likes to do, sure. But listening to your inner voice can obviously go horribly wrong at times (although I also rather suppose she only acts like that because she thinks that’s what her fans expect from her).

All I’m saying is that she isn’t really well-advised to still behave like that.

France should have picked Clara Luciani’s “Le reste” as their entry. My favourite non-Eurovision song this year, with a wonderfully Jacques Demy video – give it a try, people. I hope Clara represents France in the actual contest someday.

Tbh the choice of Julien Doré with this song is kinda weird, it barely had any popularity in France.

But what?! Julien Doré is really popular in France and this song has almost 20 millions of views on youtube and millions of streams, AND HE JUST WON IT, so not a so bad choice it seems…..and Julien Doré at Eurovision would be a big deal.

So Belgium chose someone who doesn’t even sing lead on the song. That’s pretty pathetic.

I think if given the choice, Dua Lipa would totally prefer representing Belgium over the UK… Considering the cr*p the UK has sent to Eurovision in recent years and their track records, I wouldn’t want to be associated with that.

(Calm down, I’m joking ;)).
