Germany revealed the six finalists for their national final show Germany 12 Points during a press conference on February 10th. And ever since then fans have been voicing their opinions, which frequently skew to the negative. Among the biggest disappointment for some fans was that, against most people’s expectations, the German band Eskimo Callboy did not make the cut. Fans soon started a petition, which, at the time of writing this post, had amassed more than 44,000 signatures.

The band were probably the most famous of all applicants in this year’s German selection, boasting more than 400,000 subscribers on YouTube. News that they’d applied had already sent shockwaves through the fandom. It seems their exclusion from the final has sent a series of secondary tremors.

During the Germany 12 Points press conference, Alexandra Wolfslast, the German head of delegation, revealed that the band made it to the final selection round together with 29 other acts.

However, the jury – consisting of Alexandra as well as six representatives from German radio stations – didn’t choose the four-piece in the end. On the day of the press conference, the band uploaded a sarcastic video to their YouTube channel saying they’d been rejected. It amassed more than a quarter of a million views within 24 hours.

The Change.org petition calls for NDR to let the “We Got The Moves” hitmakers compete as a seventh finalist in the national final. Among the upset fans are influencers like FreshTorge, who has over 3.5 million followers on YouTube, and HandOfBlood with over 2.3 million followers.

The author of the petition has also sent an open letter to NDR.

Writing on their official Facebook page, eurovision.de (the official web site of Germany at Eurovision) stated in the comments section that it is definitely okay to critizise the selection, but that it won’t support the petition. We should underline that eurovision.de does not have any say in the selection process in any way, though, so who knows what could happen…

The band wanted to represent Germany at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and applied with two different songs: “Pump it”, which has over 8 million views on YouTube, and “We Got the Moves”, which has over 12 million. They describe themselves as follows: “With freshly styled mullets and moustaches, the guys put the pedal to the metal and celebrate a colorful metalcore party. This is funfair, this is cotton candy, this is roller coaster – great ride here, be there!”

Do you think the group should be added as a seventh finalist in Germany’s selection? Let us know your opinion in the comment section below!

Editor’s note: The band has previously stated that their name is not meant to offend anyone. But, as the New York Times explains, “it is considered derogatory by many who associate it with racist, non-Native colonizers who settled in the Arctic and used the term.” You can read more on the Alaska Native Language Center web site.

And loose like every time?! We want more selection. It’s not only about EC. They give us 6 songs to vote out of 944. They told us about the diversity of genre this time. Sorry, this 6 aren’t in no way bad. But there is nothing divers about it. They are all smooth pop to hear while driving in your car. We have more in Germany than this. If they were diverse And good, nobody would say anything against it. The petition has 80.000 votes and counting. That’s not all EC fans. The statements of the delegation are lame.

Having heard the six selected songs, I must say I agree with the jury. This is just not good enough. It is never a good idea to send an artist/artists that are popular only in their own country to ESC with a mediocre song. Norway tried last year with Tix, and it didn’t work (even though that song was way better than Eskimo Callboy’s song).

They have been posting videos on their youtube detailing learning why the name is offensive, rather than just changing the name to run away from the controversy and not put in any work to learn why what they did was wrong.
If they just immediately changed the name put an apology on their social media, it would look a lot less honest than what they are currently doing.

I feel like these fans aren’t actually engaging with the national final in good faith, because Anxiety is a legitimately good song. Regardless of where the pulled the term from, I don’t think anyone should be surprised that some people are upset over the name. Unless you know that specific brand (which arguably shouldn’t have used the term either?!), people are obviously going to have a reaction to seeing the word.

Also – that example about the swastika literally isn’t valid, because the Germans took that symbol FROM Eurasian cultures. Buddhists and Hindus are allowed to reclaim it. Whereas no one needs to reclaim a word like “eskimo” – it’s literally just a slur.

Let me tell you one thing: These kind of songs don’t represent the actual german music industry at all. The broadcaster just doesn’t want a german win. Because winning means hosting it and hosting it means spending money. But this money is already planned for other shows. Germany is not like Sweden where the local music industry has close links to Eurovision. In Germany Eurovision is treated like a joke – but on purpose.

In order to answer this question well, I would now have to explain to you how the German media and, above all, our public television works. Of course, Germany could host Eurovison. Our public broadcaster has an unbelievable amount of money. They could build a stage out of gold, but they just don’t want to because they don’t care about hosting Eurovision. They just want to put the money into some boring movie-productions and tv shows only people older than 50 actually watch. Besides that in german public television there is no innovation, no ideas, no departure and no thinking… Read more »

That’s what seems to be the case with the BBC too- it’s relatively cheap and simple to enter ESC, so why bother too hard?

I was gonna say the same thing about the BBC, though I do think most of their focus is on daytime programmes as well as the likes of EastEnders & Strictly Come Dancing.

UK media hasn’t helped either in terms of promoting Eurovision.

YES, they should be. Period.

I was VERY surprised to hear that they weren’t selected. I would very much like to hear the rationale as to why they weren’t included in the lineup. Im truthfully not being snide when I ask this, but is it possible NDR doesn’t want to run the risk of having to host Eurovision next year for some reason? I would think that EC Cowboy would have a very real chance of winning…

Yep, you’ve nailed it. Frank Beckmann, program director at NDR even ‘jokingly’ confirmed that in an interview in October.

Surely if you put the effort to put a national final on TV, you put in the effort to pick the biggest acts that will put on the best songs and get the most people watching? Isn’t that the point of television? I can’t understand why they were snubbed with a bigger fanbase than probably all other 900 artists who applied combined.

It’s hard to imagine that the best Germany (population 83 million) could come up with was a song about soap and ‘hallo Welt’.

I’ve got a feeling NDR will give in to the pressure and let them compete. When you think of it they really do mess it up almost every year. The ann sophie accident. S!sters last minute inclusion, that time they picked xavier naidoo and then had to drop him for racist and ignorant statements.

It just seems so stupid to only include radio station representatives to the jury. The current selection makes it clear why that’s a problem. The entry for Germany should represent the music taste of Germany and since the uproar is so big, NDR should listen to us I would say.

Germany is deliberately being the worst, right? Last year a bad joke, this year a joke NF, the people in charge can’t possibly be that stupid. This is actively wanting to fail, isn’t it? I don’t really get it though. I remember Germany being eager to host and also talk about Germany hosting in case Australia wins. Truthfully, Germany was good for 3 years only. 2010-2012. By now, it’s like those years never happened. I thought new people are in charge and that Schreiber guy was the problem. But he always seemed to want to do well, just too dumb… Read more »

Eurovision has a completely different status in Germany than in other countries like Sweden or Ukraine. The interest is not nearly as great as in other countries. The success of 2010-2012 can be explained by the fact that NDR (or ARD), together with the private broadcaster Pro7 and Stefan Raab, started a new selection process back then. There, for the first time in German ESC history, the right artists with the right songs were carefully sought. Lena was discovered in 2010 and Roman Lob in 2012.. At some point, however, this was too time-consuming and expensive for those responsible. In… Read more »

probably, I couldn’t think of a proper word. As it goes beyond incompetence. It has to. A country of over 80 million and they picked Jendrik. And the NF title Germany 12 points is just cynical. What’s a word between incompetent and evil?

It couldn’t even be more cynical. Four out of the last six German acts failed to get 12 points in total. I mean … can you believe it?

And of course that’s not just bad luck.

I don’t care if their music is good or not. I haven’t bothered to listen to them. I just don’t want an act with a blatantly racist name in Eurovision. Downvote all want, but it would fly in the face of the spirit of inclusivity and togetherness of the contest. Imagine having a band with the n-word in their name. It’s not acceptable and neither should it be to have this band with this name in the contest. It would be okay if they change their name, like how the Dixie Chicks became The Chicks, and Lady Antebellum became Lady… Read more »

I feel like you should look into the topic before writing half an essay. Eskimo Callboy said that the will be changing their name. Back when they decided to choose that name there was no bad intention but they soon realised that a new name would be suitable.

Fantastic! I would support them going to Eurovision under a new name.

Why haven’t they changed their name already, regardless of whether they’re going to Eurovision or not?

Keep looking into the topic. There is a whole lot more that was wrong with them than just their name. They are a book accurately reflected by its cover. Their lyrics to Is Anyone Up?, which is the name of a revenge p-rn site they were affiliated with, didn’t bother them until Eurovision crowned a rock band and EC saw an avenue for themselves. And there’s much more.

Germany produces far better music than what was selected, but neither should this band have been chosen.

Well I thought we were talking about their name but if you want to talk about controversies we can do that too I guess. They are aware of what they have done in the past. They were asked about it in interviews and they have repeatedly apologised for provoking lyrics and their name, there is even an Instagram post about it: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXy5Si6LjQj/ Show me the one who is within sin. Just because they sing about something (or in your case, sung about something 10 (!) years ago) doesn’t mean that they advocate it. Being purposely controversial isn’t something new here… Read more »

You cannot say this creates discussion and helps society to evolve while also calling this unneeded drama so as not to discuss it. Do you think if they went to Eurovision it wouldn’t blow up even more? They still sang that song (a song not about a vague “something” but about s-xual videos taken/uploaded without the victim’s consent and for which the site’s owner was sent to prison) on their last tour just before the pandemic. They were educated about their band name multiple times over the last few years, especially in 2020, and have only defended it. I haven’t… Read more »

This right now doesn’t create help in the evolution of society since the sole purpose of your comments are ‘They sang about that and that makes them bad!’. Rammstein (I’m not really trying to put them and Rammstein on one level, but the genre is somewhat similar and the topic is fitting) sang about much much worse things. It’s not about what they sing but rather about what they mean and what message they want to spread. I’m not sure where you are from, but this exact discussion was held about one and a half decade ago about Rammstein. There… Read more »

The purpose of my comments is to request that Eurovision and Eurofans not give this band a platform. I am making no comment on preventing the spread of their songs in general. They can make their music under whatever name they want and with whatever lyrics they want and bear the criticism they will warrant, but going in front of 180 million+ people representing Germany in what is meant to be a contest that promotes inclusivity and tolerance is an entirely different matter. You and I both know Rammstein is not an apt comparison. EC is a party band that… Read more »

I feel like you analyse their songs but not the person behind. There were several interviews (even before they considered to enter Eurovision!) about this topic. They have removed these songs from their playlists and they apologised several times for making bad jokes – they wanted to adapt a gangster image in the past and realised that these things are not really ok (compared to the rap scene where it’s totally fine) and are now officially distancing themselves from their past. Talking about something from over a decade ago as if it was done recently is just stupid, I’m sorry.… Read more »
