Melodifestivalen 2022: John Lundvik — “Änglavakt”
After two years away, John Lundvik is back at Melodifestivalen. He made his Mello debut in 2018, placing third in the final with “My Turn”.
One year later, he returned and won the competition with “Too Late For Love”, which went on to place fifth at Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv.
“Änglavakt” was written by John Lundvik, Anderz Wrethov, Elin Wrethov, Benjamin Rosenbohm and Fredrik Sonefors.
Anderz Wrethov is best known as one of the songwriters behind “Too Late For Love”, John Lundvik’s winning entry at Melfest 2019. He also co-wrote Tusse’s “Voices”, which won the 2021 contest. Elin Wrethov, Anderz’s sister, previously collaborated with her brother on the Azerbaijani Eurovision 2009 entry “Always”.
Eagle-eyed Eurovision fans will recognise Benjamin Rosenbohm as one half of Ben & Tan, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020 champions. Ben was set to fly the Danish flag at Eurovision 2020 before the contest was cancelled.
Meanwhile, Fredrik Sonefors is known for his work on the Eurovision 2014 theme song, Emmelie de Forest’s “Rainmaker”, and for writing a series of tracks for song contest greats including Måns Zelmerlöw and Helena Paparizou.
What do the “Änglavakt” lyrics mean?
“Änglavakt” — literally “guardian angel” in English — is a song about unconditional love and compassion. John makes a promise to his love, insisting he will be there for them no matter what.
With lyrics like “Är du svag är jag stark (“If you’re weak, I will be strong”) and “Med dig klarar jag av allt” (“With you I will manage everything”), John affirms that as long as the two are together, there is nothing they can’t face.

The sound from the street Silent but we are already awake Can we stay here forever? See the moon from the balcony We can leave the world outside And if you aren’t here Who am I then? Because I can’t breathe without you I promise everything will work out If you’re weak, I will be strong With you I will manage everything There isn’t anyone more beautiful than you Everytime you look at me like now Time is standing still Stay here tonight Our hearts beat in time I will always be your guardian angel The lights are down But I see you shining like gold And I hold you so near Dry your tears You know I’ve done it a thousand times before But if you aren’t here Who am I then? Because I can’t breathe without you I promise everything will work out If you’re weak, I will be strong With you I will manage everything There isn’t anyone more beautiful than you Everytime you look at me like now Time is standing still Stay here tonight Guardian angel Because I can’t breathe without you I promise everything will work out If you’re weak, I will be strong With you I will manage everything Our hearts beat in time I will always be your guardian angel |

Borring song, please no
Not again, please
About the title. “Guardian angel” exists in Swedish and the word for this is “skyddsängel”. A symbol of protection. It’s not how the word is used. “Änglavakt” is exclusively used when someone is saved by an unbelievable luck. A young child surviving a high fall or a severe fire without any injuries. Lundvik will not protect his loved one, he will rather be the luck against all odds for them. It’s not how the word is usually used. Normally we say that someone had “änglavakt”, when they were unbelievably lucky. Rather referring to how someone was saved. Maybe “miracle” would… Read more »
I’m not satisfied with this translation. Was it done by machine?
Can this person stop being cheesy?
I guess he can’t.
Can you stop Being NAZI?
Nazi??? What are you talking about?
He can sing and it’s not as bad as My Turn which was drivel, I like that it’s in Swedish, but this should not win Melfest
Another hypermasculine take on love and romance. John should spend a little bit less time obsessing over his unhealthy perception of women and a little bit more time trying to figure out how to write a good song because this is as uninspiring as it gets. Compared to this, El Diablo was a work of Shakespeare.
Getting vibes from Serbia 2017 “In too deep” with the chorus.
We’ve heard this before but he can sing I guess
I will always be your guardian angel is not romantic but creepy as hell. If someone tells me this I run for three days on a row.
I will always be your miracle is what he actually says
One of the most uninteresting artists i can think of in the eurovision world.
I don’t hate it, but there’s a bit of manly ego about it.
I’m sure the woman can look after herself.
he says in an interview it doesn’t have to be between a man and a woman, the lyrics are supposed to be able to match even the love from a parent to a child, I guess that’s why the lyrics become kinda generic I guess
Another bland Lundvik-song.
Looks like John will be singing the english version “Lights Go Low” of this song in the final. It changes the song pretty much actually…
But he wont win again, not this year. If we want swedish in ESC we gotta root for Medina. (They wont win either probably but fingers crossed)
Cyprus with the song ELA!
