The seventh day of Eurovision 2022 rehearsals is drawing to a close. But first we have our penultimate act of the day — Sweden’s Cornelia Jakobs with “Hold Me Closer”. How did the Melodifestivalen winner do? Let’s find out…
Sweden’s Cornelia Jakobs “Hold Me Closer” — Eurovision 2022 second rehearsal
Padraig: Sweden has a long tradition of taking its Melodifestivalen winning staging almost shot for shot direct from Stockholm to the host city. And this time is no different. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Although, while Cornelia’s staging might be perfect, her rehearsal was beset by a plethora of technical hiccups beyond the singer’s control. First there were issues with the microphone and later there was a camera mix-up. In all, there were three failed takes and the delegation only had time for two full run-throughs as opposed to the usual three. Still, Cornelia battled on like a trooper and delivered two worthy performances, even if she did appear a bit weary of all the mishaps. “Hold Me Closer” still packs as much of a punch as it did all the way back during the first heat of Melfest. And now it comes with added pyro.

I’ve championed sweeden as a potential winner here a few times It’s a bit underwhelming probably due to technical issues but I hope it will be alright on the night
Please tell me that she is not changing the staging to be like the video in the Wiwibloggs concert.
She seems so over it – although reading what happened in her rehearsal I can understand. That said, her vocals are always on point – she can bang out this song again and again and again and still sound great, this is a very very good thing in Eurovision!
The main problem here is that she looks so pissed people will be put off and won’t vote for her. Changing the attitude is an emergency!!
I’m honestly a bit let down. I know it’s almost a tradition that Melfest winners bring the exact same thing to ESC, but she wasn’t able to pull out the public voting, and I think one of the reasons why she didn’t won (public voting) was the staging. This year we have a potential winner and she could’ve done so much more, but her team (and perhaps maybe also her) chose not to, without considering this a potential winner. Cornelia will do well no doubt, but this staging is too short of winner material. I’m happy she worked on her… Read more »
The main reason she didn´t won the public vote in Sweden was because of Anders Bagge.
He is very famous in Sweden and has been afraid of singing in public, he did it in Masked Singer last year, he was a phenomenon here this year.
People voted for him mainly because of this and not the song.
Everyone here in Sweden can relate to Bagge in some way because of him being one of the judges in Swedish Idol for many years
No, that’s were you’re wrong. As a Swede and I’ve watched Melfest since 2004, and Cornelia came second in the Swedish public voting because of Anders Bagge. His well known in Sweden and his like the big happy teddy bear and loved by Swedes. His a jury, song writer etc. Even if Chanel, Ochman, Robles etc was competing against Anders bagge, Anders bagge would still win the Swedish public vote. Cornelia came second due to the public voted for Anders Bagge rather than his song. I personally think sometimes less is more. She might stand out due to simple stage… Read more »
Oh, Italy. Oh, Eurovision. The technical problems are bad. Many of the songs this year suck, despite mostly excellent performers and performances. I think this has to do with so many songs being written by committees of 5 or 6 or even 10 songwriters.
I forgot to point out that in contrast, Cornelia’s song was written by only two other people and herself – which I think is why it is so much better than most of the other songs.
Horrible, I don’t get the hype about this whatsoever.
If Croatia would have shown have up with this staging it would have been read to flith. Let’s face it. There is a group of fans that pick one song they love and get behind it without any room for criticism. 2017 it was Italy , 2018 France and this year it is Sweden. They never win
It’s the simplicity and intimacy that is the most important thing here. A good song doesn’t need anything else 😉 And for me, in these days we live in, it’s just perfect. This year I think Italy is the country that is overrated by fans, not Sweden.
Well most in Europe hasn’t seen her and the Swedish audience doesn’t wrote for a song the same way as other countries. They vote for a hole package! And they expect that the artist stay rather close to staging on melfest.
Oh would you rather they change it so that ugly black semi circle of death is on full display?? no thank you -_- if it ain’t broke and works really well don’t fix it, clearly SVT said “this stage design is garbage so we’ll bring our own staging and props from home”
I want taly, Poland and UK to be in top 3 but although Ukraine’s song is good, Sweden’s song is better than Ukraine
Swedish delegation is the only delegation whose singer brought their own microphone to the stage; namely the silver cable microphone which Cornelia Jacobs always use. Sound problems might have been related to this. Song is nice but a bit overrated
A Swedish newspaper just reported that Cornelia will be given an additional sound check due to the extraordinary technical difficulties during her 2nd rehearsal. Let’s hope they can sort out all the issues!
Where can I find this information? Aftonbladet?
People…. -_- What’s wrong with that? The thing is the artists from Sweden are already preparing their performance for Eurovision in Melfest and that’s why their performance look the same. Why change something that isn’t broken? Look at Loreen, Sanna, Måns, Robin etc. They know how they want it, copy and paste Melfest + adjust and adapt. I was worried when I heard what happened with Cornelia second rehearsal, but as she said, they already know what they want, how it works and she confirmed that it can be fixed. I can ensure that there have been some changes and… Read more »
I like that she mostly sits on the stage in the Melfest performance. Has she kept that, does anyone know?
Whats wrong whit that
Yeah pretty much the same but the camera angles are wider which kinda annoys me. Let’s hope it’s not like that throughout the whole performance because this is still a banger package
Me too, but Thursday will be the first time that most people will watch her anyways
I like this live performance. My winner!
I don’t like this rehearsal. She seems to be tired of this song already. Everything looks the same but for me it’s not the same performance as she gave during melodifestivalen
Yes, she seems a little bit tired…but in my opinion this is her best performance.
I think production need to work on camera angle like this is worst than Portugal.
Not talking about song I’m talking about the host
Are you serious? Portugal did an amazing job. You people will always complain about 2018’s organization simply because the fact Portugal didn’t had led screens.
At least, Jon Ola Sand and EBU didn’t think the same way.
What exactly are you talking about? The show in Lisbon, technical/production-wise, was impeccable.
Stupid and unfair comment. Lisbon offered one hell of a show and pretty much everyone agreed on that.
Yeah it sucked for sure…….to received 21 points from tele… xD
Not Portugal fault your Shawn Mendes wannabe floped!!!
So sorry that nowadays eurovision wise some southern countries are “dance you off”… i really don’t get it, this hate that some people from north european countries show to the southern ones…
RAI and the EBU sure how to handle things sloppily this year. But eh, this entry is as mediocre as it gets. Folks who call it ‘authentic’ probably don’t know what that word means
and apparently you don’t either.
Shhh…don’t say the Swedish song is mediocre!… People are going to eat you alive.
Funny how much I agree with you. People act like the song is a revolutionary piece of art when in reality it’s merely a whiny ballad sung by a woman with a chainsmoker vocal.
in another year Cornelia’s song probably would not be a top contender, but this year, most of the songs themselves, even though well performed, really kind of suck. I think this is because so many of them have been written by whole committees of songwriters, literally 5 or 6 or in at least one case 10! Nonetheless, I think Cornelia through her performance turns a decent song into a great one.
Her vocals are amazing, and that’s something that won’t be ruined with technical difficulties. She’ll do great in the semi and in the final.
I don’t like this, but I prefer it to win over Ukraine or UK. It’s gonna be Ukraine vs Sweden in the final (televoting vs juries)
I agree that they seem like the two most likely winners (and unlike you I like them both)
I wouldn’t mind seeing Sweden win. We do need a contest in Gothenburg.
No, we don’t. The contest has already been hosted in the three major cities multiple times. If they win again, they would have to host it in Kiruna, Up Up North, to at least make it slightly exciting.
I respect the song and wouldn’t mind see it winning but, I feel like the UK has this in the bag. The best staging of the year, the best voice of the year and one of the best songs of the year. This is the UK’s year, I don’t give a damn what people will say about this but, the UK it’s their time. #Coventry2023
Are we listening to the same song. Talk about overhyped. Are you related to him. The song sucks with asinine lyrics and helium vocals.
No I am not related to him (I wish though he seems like a really cool & chill person to be around). No, the song isn’t overhyped, the lyrics are actually quite deep and introspective and helium vocals…are you sure you didn’t get him confused with Mahmood?
Downvotes on a UK entry…Why? Why aren’t I surprised?
This is a joke right ? Coventry ? Come on of all places . UK deserves a top 10 result for sure but it won’t win . I would be happy with a U.K. win but I accept reality it’s not strong enough
No joke, Coventry can be an AMAZING host city, that is not a obvious choice of London, Birmingham, Manchester or Liverpool. I disagree that the song isn’t strong enough to win the contest, it is plenty strong. This has capacity to win comfortably and even win the Jury vote to boot. The UK entry this year isn’t some overinflated entry like Ukraine or Italy. It’s a seriously decent song that really does have a lot of fans.
It would be the UK that won, not England. At least consider Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinburgh… maybe even Belfast.
I don’t dispute that however with the devolved administrations (N.Ireland, Scotland, Wales) you have to consider the local aspects can the local broadcaster afford it, is there a local airport nearby that isn’t a 2-3 hour train/coach journey, are hotels near to the venue itself. These are the things you have to consider. Not to be shady to the other parts of the UK but, England seems to be more not reliable but, more equipped to host the contest than the others are.
The four cities I mentioned all have airports and hotels, so there’s no need to worry about that. I think you might be wrong about the BBC too. I’m not sure exactly how the BBC works, but I imagine the job of host would fall to the Westminster of the broadcaster and not the Holyrood.
I didn’t mean things like that but, it all comes down to quantity of resources available, manpower, accessibility and space. I don’t see any of those countries being a viable host for the UK contest for the exception of maybe Glasgow
I disagree, but we should probably wait until Sunday 15th before having this conversation… your hopes might be just a little too high already.
Belfast. I love that suggestion. That would be awesome.
Do you work for Coventry Tourism Office?
The Uk will for sure be in the TOP5, but will it be enough for a win?
I would say so, the song far better than the overhyped Italy and Ukraine
I’m pretty sure that if the UK wins it would be hosted in Manchester next year, as the BBC have moved a lot of their production up there. I think Manchester would make a great host city actually. I don’t think the UK will win though but hoping for at least top 10!
When Carola sang in Italy, her wind machine made the electricity cut out right in the middle of her live performance on the actual broadcast. Sweden still won.
This was nothing.
I also believe half-way through her performance she lost her in-ear completely and couldn’t hear anything. The Swedish delegation complained to RAI after and asked for her to perform one more time but RAI refused saying that because she kept singing and had completed the performance there would be no need for her to sing again.
For people calling her out because she wasnt happy because of the many technical issues, how would you react when not even basic things work? There might be a lot of hate for sweden but at least their productions are never that messy
Because their productions are often…how to put it?…too full of themselves?… Swedes always do everything better than the rest. It’s the absolute undeniable truth! Accept it and don’t you dare complain.
They did better also the covid management, isn’t it?
Lot of technical issues for several countries today including Belgium and a country the morning but I don’t remember which. But Sweden had the worst. I hope everything is fixed now and that there won’t be any problem next week.
Fine, Sweden, you’re allowed to win… I was a hater when this won, i didn’t understand the hype. But yup, this is fighting for the win with Ukraine.
I would rather say it is fighting for win with Serbia and Poland. Ukraine will do well, but not as well as many think, probably like Lithuania 2021.
Serbia and Poland have no chance (one is too niche, the other just don’t have the quality). UK and Spain could but then these countries are not vote magnets. Italy will be boycotted by everyone due to the organizational issues. Netherlands had been underwhelming in the rehersals up to now. So yes, one of Sweden or Ukraine is the most likely winner.
Italy’s song should not be blamed due to the technical problems; Italy’s song is nice
Serbia cant win; it’s obvious. The fighting for win would be Italy, Poland, Sweden and UK, in my opinion
Why do you think it is obvious that Serbia can’t win? They literally have the most unique entry this year and their performance is one of those which are staged the best.
the words to Serbia’s song are ridiculous, but as performance-art, it is good
I really hope the production team fix all of the technical problems in time for the live shows next week. I’m just a bit surprised that issues such as camera angles haven’t been fixed yet as these are the second rehearsals. It must be frustrating for both the artists and delegations who put a lot of time and effort into planning the performances, for them to then experience problems when they get on stage. Fingers crossed everything will go smoothly next week!
It’s really nothing compared to other delegations dealing with the dead sun thing
I mean if they can’t even get the microphone to work during a rehearsal, I’m not surprised the sun doesn’t work properly.
Sorry but keep in mind that Swedish delegation didnt want to use microphone sets of the EBU; they brought their own silver cable microphone which Cornelia Jacobs always use
Well, if I remember properly last year even in the first jury semi final there were at least 2 songs that had to be repeated sure to technical glitches (Romania and Malta if I’m not mistaken). So this is not so out of the ordinary… That’s why there are rehearsals…
Yes, i agree
Obviously there’s some mitigating circumstances about this one and how much Cornelia was putting into this exact run-through. We knew there were going to be no problems with how it looked though.
I don’t know, Sweden’s objectively good but it’s starting to feel like it would be a bit of an underwhelming winner for me.
Well it’s quite an understated staging and performance, nothing wrong with that in a sea of circus acts, personally I think this is the winner, I’ve been listening to it for the last two months and win or not I’ll be listening to it for a long time to come. The only small change I would make is the name, I would have called it “the Right One at The Wrong Time” I think that would encapsulate the pain and emotion of the song better. I’m Irish and I knew the day was coming when we would have to share… Read more »
wondering if she delivered is like wondering if water is wet
I feel bad for her if the production could not even give her one solid run through. Part of me thinks this can win through solid jury love as is typical for swedish entries and being more appealing and emotional to televote than is typical for Sweden. I still do not think it’ll stand the test of time like Euphoria or even Heroes which is why I struggle to award this the top spot—but fully admit that it’s a possibility in a year without a sure front runner.
Cornelia got two today. There will be more.
I love this
amazing rehearsal again, Sweden in top 3 confirmed
Cheap, cheesy, annoying. Copy of a million songs that we hear on the radio every day
I mean I’m not sure why so many people are focusing on the fact that they’re keeping the same staging (with a few small changes here and there) when a few other countries did the same thing (Serbia, Lithuania, Portugal, Iceland, etc)
Serbia and Portugal actually changed their stagings a lot, compared to Sweden and Iceland. But i don’t mind it, if it’s working, why would they even want to change them.
My main concern with this performance is the circle. I’m not sure what that prop is meant for, as I didn’t know its meaning in the Melodifestivalen. It’s distracting and too evident. It would be better if we didn’t get to see how and where it is placed. Just the close-up camera angles. Other than that, I agree it deserves a top5 placing. Cornelia stage presence and her emotional and raw vocals are the ups of this entry.
I totally agree with you. The song has really grown on me but I just don’t get what the staging is supposed to tell me.
Whenever we see that circle entirely, I think it’s a mistake or something because it kind of looks like they used the wrong camera accidentally showing the props…
Why does everything has to have a meaning?? Its a nice visual concept
It is a basic right for people to have a meaning, you know? If you don’t agree I would recommend you move to Russia, China, North Korea, Afghanistan….. plenty of countries that would welcome you!
The back story of “the circle”:
Cornelia has a condition called “Synesthesia”. This causes her to see colours whenever she hears music. The circle changes colours in accordance with what she sees while she listens to this particular song. The idea is to allow people without this condition to see the same thing.
Well, apperently the rehearsal was a disaster beyond Cornelia’s control! Thank you Italy! What the h*** are you doing?? Must we bring our own people from Sweden or what? There were problems with the microphone, the circle and camera angles..
People that was not supposed be on camera suddenly appeared, also some cables, and so on and son…
I guess these are the reasons why it is a REHEARSAL but not an actual show. I fon’t understand why everyone expects perfection at REHEARSALS.
That happens, chill, everything will be fine trust me.
Sweden’s singer brought their own microphone which was the silver cable microphone as can be seen. They refused to use the stage microphone; microphone problems can be related to this but when it comes to Sweden;everyone tends to overhype them
‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ More like if it’s broke don’t fix it *cough* *italy/rai* *cough cough* *the sun* *cough* *2022 – the year of technical blips*
I think Cornelia Jakobs has a real but outside chance of winning. I think she will win the jury vote, but not the public vote. I am SO thrilled she has kept the staging and costume from Melodifestivalen! If she nails her Eurovision performance like she did Melfest, it wil be stunning, and her song this year is the only one I know I will keep in my regular (non-Eurovision) playlist. I have a feeling that the public vote will go massively for Ukraine because of the war (which I can totally understand), but in a different year she would… Read more »
This will more than likely win the jury vote if the juries don’t feel obligated to vote for Ukraine.
I’m not sure if the public will respond well to this though. That’s the only downfall for Sweden this year.
Feel the same, many of the fans of her songs love it after 3rd or 4th listening, on ESC night you only hear it once or twice so it might be a middle position from the public for her 🙁
she’s competing with a lot of female ballads for the jury vote, especially greece whose performance has great production value. i do think she’ll either win or come close to winning the jury vote, but if she does it won’t be a landslide (240-260 points).
UK will win the jury vote. Ukraine top 5. Ukraine romp the televote, Swedennas usual get very little. Ukraine wins, UK come second with Italy and Swedennfughting for 3rd.
The UK winning the jury vote is too far-fetched for me. They’re possibly a top 5 contender in my opinion.
I also think we shouldn’t underestimate Spain, if Eleni could sweep the jury vote and televote, then why can’t Chanel?
If it’s broken, don’t fix it. See Sweden and Italy have similar philosophies. But not completely. This sun is hilarious. She brought her own, well done! And it spins like a mad carrousel.
haha, yes, she was the only one to bring a sun (green, of course, which is actually how the sun looks in Hydrogen-Alpha light).
“If it’s not broken, don’t fix it”. Cornelia followed exactly this advice and she rightfully remains as one of the favorites to win the 2022 Contest. 🙂
Yet this time it did break big time, clumsy camera work, technical hiccups, she really took it like a champ though (it is definetly not her fault)
Really? I might as well watch the rehearsal clip, in approximately an hour, to be sure because I haven’t learned critical anything yet about her performance with the camera angles.
no surprises there. this staging worked well anyway. when was the last time the swedish representative changed their staging significantly from their melodifestivalen one ?
I think it was with “Undo”. There were changes back then.
I loved “Undo”. Sanna Nielsen is a great performer (and host). Clearly she would have won if it weren’t the Conchita year.
Well, The Common Linnets where there too.
Robin did when he performed You back in 2013
Eighteen years ago, when Lena Philipsson changed from white to pink.
She had the pink dress in the melodifestival semifinal…
I’ll still count it. White was better.
I mean, last year looked different from melodifestivalen
