Ahead of Eurovision 2023, Ukraine staged one of the most emotional national selections of recent memory, beamed live from an underground bomb shelter.

And today Ukrainian state broadcaster Suspilne has confirmed its participation for Eurovision 2024 and the return of its national final. Details about how to enter the selection will be revealed in due course.

Ukraine confirms Eurovision 2024 participation

As with last year’s competition, musician and composer Dmytro Shurov — better known as Pianoboy — will serve as musical director. Fans of the Eurovision 2023 postcards may remember that he created the musical theme for those short snippets.

In a statement Pianoboy said:

“The call for entries of the National Selection and the new Eurovision season in Ukraine will start soon. I’m speaking to everyone now: tune in, we must create and choose the next song to make the country proud, to win the hearts of Europe and light up a new star from Ukraine. This year, there is a surprise for you all – the viewers will be able to choose one of the finalists themselves. There is so much interesting ahead.”

Oksana Skybinska, Head of Delegation for Ukraine at Eurovision, sang the praises of Eurovision 2024 hosts Sweden.

Sweden has repeatedly been recognised for its exemplary skills of hosting this international event, with record-breaking 204 million viewers watching the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden. Ukraine’s presence at this international event is significant, especially in such a difficult time of war. It will let us bring Ukraine’s voice and message to the whole world.”

“In addition, the National Selection, which will determine this year’s Ukrainian representative, will allow us to invite (at least online) Eurovision fans from all over the world to Ukraine – to show how, despite the difficulties of the war, Ukraine cares about its musical culture. This year’s National Selection will feature innovations allowing Ukrainians to be even more involved in making key selection decisions. More information about the terms and novelties of the National Selection will be announced this week when the application process starts“.

I support Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO when the time is right (different criteria for the two blocks, though) and their will to fight back against Russian slavery. My country knows what living under the beast’s oppression from the East for centuries means, for real. However, my only hope for Eurovision 2024 is less politics. It has become a real problem for a contest to declare its apoliticness while rewarding those who cry about political issues the loudest. Some examples come to mind. Keep in mind that those are the most obvious ones; that doesn’t mean the… Read more »

From someone who has only liked 5 of their entries in the history of the contest, I don’t hold out much hope…

Denmark won at Globe arena in 2000 and Malmo arena in 2013.
Ukraine (who were 3rd in 2013) won at Globe Arena in 2016…

Are there any outstanding countries that people are still worried about? Last year, people seemed worried about Czechia, though in the end they pulled through.

Romania after the nil points and exploiting an 18-year-old self made DIY act for their gain.

Ukraine made this super nice selection d0e0ep underground in a train station while the country was sadly at war at rrrisk of attttack.

Hungary organized the world athletics championships for which they even built a huge stadium plus facilities.

*Romania’s TVR* managed 0 points while the “artists” seem to convey a certain act live on the Eurovision stage, also it’s worth noting that Romania 2023 was the worst ever performance/package at least since 2010.

That does seem likely. Romania taking a year off almost seems like it would be a mercy for the artists and audience alike.

For me Ukraine deserved to win in 2008,2013,2021 not in 2004 (song for TOP 5), 2016 (song for TOP 7) ,2022 (song for TOP 13). Politics gave Ukraine win in 2016,2022

I also prefer Ukraine in 2008 and 2013 to actual winners (not 2021 tho), and agree that politics were behind Ukraine’s win in 2016 (which would have been DQd if the same rules had been applied to everyone) and, quite obviously, 2022.

Happy to see Ukraine still going. They’re easily the best country in the contest. It’s not for no reason that they don’t have a single NQ yet

Happy to see them still going too, but I think they are far from the best country in the contest. They’ve had some pretty dire entries in the past and to be fair, have probably qualified many times due to bloc voting rather than the quality of the song. I normally like the Ukrainian entries but I’ve never loved any of them – they’re never on my playlist and none of their 3 winners have screamed winner to me.

your personal preferences are indisputable, but bloc voting is commonly observed practice for most ESC participant, including Sweden which is typically regarded as the best one… also, in my playlist only one Eurovision entry is present, but I would refrain from making some serious ESC-related conclusions from this fact…
