This morning Danish broadcaster DR announced the date and venue for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024. The national final will decide which artist and entry from the Kingdom of Denmark will travel over the Öresund Bridge to Eurovision 2024 in Malmö.

The eventual winner won’t have to travel far, as the show will take place 17 February 2024 in DR Koncerthuset (Concert Hall) in Copenhagen. This is the first time since the Olsen Brothers’ victory in 2000 that DMGP won’t be held in a larger sized arena. The DR Concert Hall has room for 1,800 in the audience.

Eight songs will compete in the Danish final, the same number as in the previous three editions.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2024: A new strategy

Denmark hasn’t qualified for the final of Eurovision since 2019, a fact that DR are well aware of. This will reflect the selection of songs to DMGP, where there will be a stronger focus on selecting entries that have the possibility of doing well at Eurovision.

DR have been evaluating the failures of previous years and have been looking at the types of songs and genres that have done well in Eurovision over the last few years. Those elements will be an important factor in choosing the right songs together with a focus on having an act who has the stamina to endure the marathon of Eurovision participation.

Jury with international members

Another new area of focus for DMGP will be to have a jury with international members. The exact details are yet to be confirmed, but we already know that the number of jury members will be significantly higher than the 5 members we have seen in the last few years, and that several of these jury members will be international Eurovision and music experts.

The format this year saw the public vote deciding which 3 songs went into the super final, where a combined vote of 50% public vote and 50% jury vote ended up deciding that Reiley should represent Denmark at Eurovision in Liverpool. If the public had decided on their own, we would instead have seen hardrock artist Nicklas Sonne carry the Danish flag on Merseyside.

Do you think the new strategy can help Denmark get back into the Eurovision final again? Which artists do you hope to see in the Danish selection? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

In my opinion we are totally missing out the fact that we have 3 countries in our kingdom. Why not host a small semi final in Greenland ?? to promote what ever artist they have up there. Let the 3 other countries vote. Then next small semi final let it be on Faroe Islands ??- imagine the epic scenery from nature shots we can show the Danish viewers. This would allow and secure 2 songs from Faroe Islands and Greenland to participate in the final in Denmark and make a sense of unity between our 3 countries. It’s hard to… Read more »

Don’t put the focus on Eurovision, put the focus in good songs and Denmark is like a Lego: plastic and functional.

My proposal for Eurovision: Agnes Obel. I know she won’t never represent Denmark at Eurovision, but dreaming is free.

Look forward to our new strategy working for DMGP, the new venue and Copenhagen parties on Feb 17 and May 4!

What Denmark needs to do is send Brigitte Nielsen.

I hope for a good song for Denmark, nordic song like Rasmussen or Emmelie De Forest !

If by: “We have been looking at the types of songs and genres that have done well in Eurovision over the last few years” they think of sending a nordic type of song like “Higher ground” (Denmark 2018) or Queen of Kings” (Norway 2022).. I believe everyone will be up for that kind of song for maybe one more year. But this trend will not do well if it becomes their standard. They have to come up with something good to go for the victory! In 2000 and 2013 when the contest was held in Sweden, Denmark won, both times!!!… Read more »

Denmark used to be one of my favorite national finals. Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013 was loaded with awesome songs. Not a truly awful one in the bunch. You can tell whoever put that lineup together has nothing to do with the recent DMGPs. That show was epic arena clapping feel good spectacle. Now it’s feeling like amateur hour with few standout songs. I appreciate they’ve tried to add some variety but it’s really sucked the fun of what DMGP used to be.

2012 was my favorite. Just incredible! (Although I would have picked several other songs over the winner.) How have we fallen so far?

“Looking at the types of songs and genres that have done well in Eurovision over the last few years.”

This doesn’t sound like a good strategy. Fluid Effekt would never make it had they try again next year, won’t they?

What do you mean?? They didn’t do this before??

Denmark needs to pattern up. One of my least favourite countries in Eurovision, I haven’t enjoyed a single one of their entries since I started following Eurovision (2017) with the exception of 2020. Idk why they haven’t made drastic changes to their selection process yet lmao

“There will be a stronger focus on songs that have possibility of doing well in Eurovision”…. I am sorry but why that wasn’t the case from the beginning but now after years of NQ… Truly shows how mediocre DMGP is for years now..
Also looking and trying to copy-paste entries that worked in the past is not the best idea but for starters getting to the final is the goal so I guess it’s okay..

I mean I wouldn’t really blame the DMGP in general. It’s all up to songwroters and composers in the country. They don’t have competitive songs in the national final anymore. They did have better songs than Reiley’s one tho.

“have been looking at the types of songs and genres that have done well in Eurovision over the last few years” … not the best strategy imo, something fresh, never seen and never heard before on the esc stage, that’s only what we need.

Its better than the ” looking for songs Danish audience enyoys” they had last year. Now they might go to final

2021 was not in a big arena, but I suppose it’s fair to not count that.

NF for 1,800′ audience…. 1 hour shorter ESC final…. Is Eurovision disappearing little by little?

They should change their voting system, the one they currently use barely makes sense and somehow doesn’t really favor songs that would probably qualify for the ESC grand final
They robbed themselves in 2022 by not sending Fuld Effekt

2015: Eliminated from the semi-final
2016: Eliminated from the semi-final
2017: Proper finalist thanks to the juries, but hardly any support from the televoting
2018: Fair-and-square finalist despite being the juries’ pet peeve
2019: Borderline finalist from an intense semi-final
2021: Eliminated from the semi-final despite televoting support
2022: Eliminated from the semi-final
2023: Eliminated from the semi-final
2024: Let’s find out!

2015: they failed to qualify
2016: they failed to qualify
2017: got through thanks to the juries, got few televote points, hardly made it
2018: proper qualification although disliked by the juries
2019: hardly made it
2021: they failed to qualify although had televote support
2022: failed to qualify
2023: failed to qualify.

Looks like a record of a country like N. Macedonia or Switzerland a few years ago, and not of a country that won three times.

All I ask of Denmark is to spend more time developing their songs and picking their finalists than any spectacle, so a smaller venue seems to hint at that – hopefully

By this stage I doubt anybody thinks Denmark will do well.
ESC is simply not a high priority for DR these days and a revamped selection will not change it if the selection consists of mostly unknown names and Tick-Tockers

I actually really liked Breaking My Heart last year and with a bit of a revamp live, it could have and should have done well. I do think Denmark is overdue for a hard rock, pop or rave song (like we saw in 2022), something that could surprise people who are expecting something conservative from the Danes.

Of course, that’s a lot of artists in a nutshell. They don’t get a chance, give up and focus on writing. Wish they could stop thinking like that because they are throwing away their potential completely

Unfortunately, their relationship with the DR has been fractured ever since the broadcaster rejected their entry in 2021.
