Format of Melodifestivalen 2024
30 acts participate in Melfest 2024 split into 5 heats of six acts each. The number 1 and 2 placed acts from each heat qualify directly to the grand final in Stockholm and the two lowest placed acts are finished in the competition. This make up for the first 10 acts qualifying for the grand final
Number 3 and 4 of each heat will have their fate decided in a Final Qualification held in connection with heat 5. The 10 songs in all will compete for 2 tickets to the grand final decided by the percentage of votes each entry got in their heat plus the amount of votes they get in the Final Qualification.
12 songs compete in the Grand Final of Melodifestivalen held in Friends Arena in Stockholm on 9 March.
Melodifestivalen is hosted by Carina Berg.
Who is your favourite in this heat? Are any of these acts the one you want to see go all the way to Eurovision? Let us know in the comments below.
I don’t like any of them. There are no good songs at this semifinal.
Cazzi Opeia kinda looks like Agnes Larsson (= Minecraft developer).
After snippets, prediction is Jaquline and the other one is really difficult…I don’t really like Cazzis song…the one she wrote for Jaquline is better than the one she is singing herslef haha. But i guess the second final spot goes to Klara or Cazzi maybe…
Everyone says this is the worst semi..get out of here, this is the most balanced semi, it is really difficult to just chose two songs since many of them are final worthy compared to both the earlier semis.
with snippets i mean the preview of the performances (the 30 second clips)
This is one heat where I feel the staging and overall presentation can really affect who wins and loses. Based only on the previews, I would expect Jacqline and Cazzi Opeia to go directly to the final. Clara and Kim Cesarion I would expect to go to the second chance round, for now. Of course, anything can change, even Gunilla pullinga Björn Ranelid and going direkt till finalen (though that would still very much shock me).
Well, I know fans always say the same but this time I’m really feeling it: this Melodifestivalen is the weakest in years. I’ll wait for the 12 remaining entries but this islooking rather dull.
Effortless for me. Funnily sounds better than Cazzi’s own track.
Take My Breath Away was entirely produced on Magix Music Maker 2023. Not even the Pro version…
None Deserves This Spots To The Eurowision , Maybe Clarise But All Of This Songs They Are Dredfull .
I can’t wait to hear your definitely-not-dreadful song, Bejba. Oh, wait…
The enthusiasm around the Eurovision community for Melodifestivalen has never been that low. Everything feels so predictable and calculated. Same songwriters, more or less same artists. I think that San Remo will become the thing among Eurofans the next years
as long as they make functioning stages, I’d like them to beat the Swedish/Irish record and set a new one soon. They always deliver since 2015 with maybe the minor exception of 2016 and they always have songs that would have deserved to go to Eurovision so much but couldn’t.
BREAKING NEWS! Israel sent 2 songs to the EBU, they asked Israel to check the songs that they are not too “political” for the competition. Eden Golan recorded both songs. One of the songs was written by Eden and the 2 creators of “Unicorn” and the other song was written by the producer who produced “Toy” (Eurovision 2018 winner). Israel is waiting for the EBU’s decision.
I would’ve bet money on Medalie being involved again. 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2023, it’s getting easier and easier to predict Eurovision in so many countries.
Actually no. It’s been reported, that by the submission deadline, he has not submitted a song this time around.
Jacqline’s song sounds the best out of all those, but we’ll see how she sings live
Yet again I find myself wondering how everything seems to be “done” without it actually being that, like a really amazing looking cake, which lacks taste, you know. IN: Jacqline, Kim Cesarion, Clara Klingenström, Cazzi Opeia OUT: Gunilla Persson, Klaudy I’m a bit on the edge on quite a few of the acts as they’re not clear qualifiers, Kim Cesarion is a good example – this is M&M from last year just mixed up. And it’s nothing different we haven’t seen before, so Gunilla might just make it, I mean at least her song is less predictable. Clara has a… Read more »
Heat 3 and I still can’t find an obvious potential melfest winner… let’s see the stagings for this heat maybe a stronger staging than the song like for B.Ingrosso will appear and seal the victory….
Not bothered to listen to the snippets of the songs that all sound same, Melfest needs some reset cause it’s becoming the most boring national final we have
Off-topic, the most predictable news ever, if Twitter is to be believed: “EBU have rejected Israel’s song for Eurovision 2024, on the grounds that it contains politically suggestive lyrics, and have asked KAN to rewrite the song or write a new song before the submission deadline.” If true, the EBU seems to have learned at least one thing from posting the Belarus 2021 propaganda video. It also means Iceland is getting competition for trying to politicize the contest.
The EBU would love a repeat of Belarus 2021. KAN not backing down, giving the EBU a reason to expel them. Problem solved. Headache goes away.
I’m not so sure what the EBU would love in this case. Remember their sponsors?
Oh, yeah, there’s that. Maybe they’ve already gotten the money and will worry about next year next year. Or maybe the sponsors will understand… I would hope.
Belarus 2022
LOL I also thought Belarus 2022 but I checked Wikipedia and it says 2021. I thought “is that right”? Crazy it seems so long ago, I honestly don’t remember.
M’apolgies, 2021 seems to be correct. I think I was conflating the Belarussian revolt with the Russia/Ukraine horrors. They both involve Putin, anyway.
I thought so too, but apparently, Belarus was a trailblazer. Now that I think about it, I guess it had something to do with protests against the government and the would-be 2020 participants not getting chosen for speaking out against the regime. And then the regime trying to send their very own propaganda band.
Well it is Twitter, so is as much believable as random person shouting on the street. But it would be interesting if it were true. I know there was a clip on there that apparently “confirmed” that the song would turn out political, though if I remember correctly people there talked about inspiring people in hard times.
Unicorn seems political, in retrospect. I remember Sol Stevia interpreting it that way, but it seems more true now. Any vague hint of “resilience” will probably be seen that way. Fairly or not.
His interpretation made a lot of sense. Of course, the Unicorn lyrics could and should never be disqualified. As terrible as I find that song, if it tried to send a political message through the lyrics, it was quite clever.
Israel’s song will be examined under more scrutiny than other songs. Can you imagine the uproar if the song included the words/phrases like “fighter” “don’t give up” “we are heroes” and other like that?
Luxembourg took care of the fighter. Nobody should use heroes again as it’s been done to death. But I really don’t think they could deny anybody such simple English phrases like don’t give up. That’d be censorship.
Something like Switzerland 2023? Political no doubt, but in a different direction.
I saw that too one so it seems like very plausible if not predictable news. The source cited in the tweet I quoted is Israeli news outlet Ynet.
These songs are notting special for me. I don’t like any of this
Me neither….
I never listen to the snippets, because I don’t see the point and they ruin the anticipation.
That said, I hope reigning Eurovision champion Cazzi goes through.
true, but one minute gives a good idea of the song, especially in Melodifestivalen where pretty much all the songs follow the same formula of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-chorus. So one verse and one chorus basically lets you know the whole song.
Also, we don’t know how much the “champion” actually contributed to Tattoo. She’s credited together with Loreen and the 4 males who basically write everything in Sweden’s Eurovision world that wasn’t written by the Debs . Something tells me champion may just be a bit of an overstatement here.
Even if she only contributed a tiny bit, it could still be the most important part! “Stuck on me like a tattoo-oo-oo” sounds very Cazzi Opeia to my ears.
The violins playing and stars aligning were the best part.
It bothers me that Loreen leaves out a syllable on “violins”…
The one who didn’t contribute in Tattoo is Loreen. She even admitted that the song was sent to her….so how can she have contributed? Added a single word maybe? I really dislike the Swedish production factory like that…. its almost like i want Gunhilla to win this semi as it is written and composed by one person only. LOL!!!
The thing is, the people who run this show can just point to the recent victory to defend themselves. Literally, they could select 29 bad songs every year, if the 30th gives them another Eurovision victory, they can go on like this forever. And probably will. They can sell it as a success and in terms of results, it’s not even a lie.
Nothing stands out again. I think I’ll go with Clara this week. It’s a very weak Mello this year.
Good, M&M are guaranteed winners then.
M&M or Danny yeah, but I’m guessing Danny.
A shame Danny and M & M are in the same heat. The current results reveal will give away immediately who is the most popular of the two.
Dotter and Danny are in the same heat, heat 4 next week. The M twins are in heat 5.
Oh, thank you. I keep forgetting there are five heats now, so I just assumed they were both on in 5. I really do not like new way of doing things… I am a creature of habit.
Both in 4
Why? We havent even heard the songs yet?
Why? Because you loved their song last year?
Jacqline is the odds favourite clearly to win the heat, but there’s something missing from her song and it’s a little generic. I do like some of the instrumentations though. For me Cazzi is the clear standout as her song has MUCH BETTER lyrics that her previous songs have had. They seem VERY deep. Also giving Clara a chance because she’s so good live and the song actually has potential. So does Kim and the cheesy Gunilla who could end up having a Swedish hit potentially there if she performs the song with cringy enough staging!
Three Heats And Not A Single Good Song In Melfest Yet? This Is Crazy For Swedish Standards
Crazy normal maybe, at this point.
Sweden dont want to win again, probably.
You are never happy anyways so why does it matter to you?
What country are you from Bejba?
Cazzi <3
Don’t know how to feel about this weeks songs, I can’t even say if I find this heat weaker or stronger than last week. I’ll probably say that this heat is stronger but without any “standout moments” by melfest standards. I like Jacqline most I would say, but she needs to have a great staging (as the song feels like I could have heard it in melfest 10-12 years ago). A bit let down by Clara Klingenström as Aldrig mer sounds like a downgrade compared to Behöver inte dig idag. Cazzi Opeias hook sounds exactly like something else I’ve heard… Read more »
Seeing the same writers every year in Melfest gets annoying…
Their songs aren’t necessarily bad, but aren’t there more aritsts in Sweden?
The newer ones are with Gunila, Klaudy and Kim in this one. Clara also writes her own songs.
Composers: Bobby Ljunggren, Clara Klingenström, David Lindgren Zacharias. Ljunggren is a Schlager veteran who wrote songs like Perelli’s Hero. The opposite of newer.
Some of these songs sound more robotic than the actual AI songs from San Marino.
BORING
Im almost ashamed to be Swedish because it seems only Swedes like Gunillas song. Am i the only Swede here who likes Jacqlines song.
Its a shame for all REAL singers
Well of course only Swedes like the song, it is written for Swedes. Melodifestivalen is a show for Swedish audience , not for a worldwide audience. What the world thinks is never a factor when picking songs but rather what would entertain the audience
Asså du behöver inte skriva på engelska då vi båda är svenskar
There aren’t ”certain” songs this time…Everything is open
I would say:
First, Jacqline – Effortless
Second, Kim Cesarion – Take my Breath Away
Third/Fourth, Cazzi Opeia and Gunilla
Next week Dotter!
I would swap Kim with Cazzi. And seeing how weak his rehersals have been I would even exchange him with Klingenström
the blandest bland songs that have ever blandened
Effortless is a winner here. But it all depends on how it goes on stage. Cazzi Opeia will have a nice stage show I think that might be able to lift her song. Gunilla is a big no for me. Just because she bothers to travel all the way from America to get up on stage and sing and point out to the swedish people about how she doesn’t care about what people say or think about her it means that she does care imo.
Clara sound very much the same as 2021. Can be good or bad on Saturday.
Yet I think Gunilla was surprisingly good. I think she might surprise and go to final
Gunilla has the best song here.
I can never take Cazzi Opei seriously because of that name ? she is lucky she didn’t get picked for Torino ?
“Zorra” has been reclaimed, so Cazzi’s name is a mark of power.
But it just means “dicks” hahaha it’s nothing like zorra ?
Kim and La Gunilla are the best here
The only song I cared enough to listened to in full so far was the one from Dear Sara. Here, Effortless could be good. I won’t shake has a nice melody, but the singer has such a weak voice. Clara seems to be back a weaker song than 2021. It was a big mistake to not select her that year.
Getting harder to predict, which also makes it more fun in a way.
Jacqline is the winner here. But then I also actually think Gunilla Persson was the best. We all expected a joke act but it turned out to be a banger, I would not count her out as DF.
Then 3 and 4th, Cazzi and Kim. Though I can also see Cazzi being runner up.
If Gunilla qualify to the final, i lose hope for humanity
It actually is surprisingly good
It actually is very bad.
