The first night of Italy’s Festival di Sanremo has just ended, with all 29 contestants performing their songs. While the full results are not known, we do know the artists who finished in the top five positions after tonight’s vote.

Festival di Sanremo took place in the city of Sanremo at Teatro Ariston, just as the previous years. The 29 contestants performed alongside the festival’s orchestra, and their songs are now available on the streaming platforms.

The show was hosted by Carlo Conti and co-hosted by Antonella Clerici and Gerry Scotti. Tonight, the press jury cast their votes after the final performance. The former Eurovision contestant Achille Lauro, who represented San Marino in 2022, is among the jury’s favorites.

Festivali di Sanremo 2025: Night 1

Top 5

This year brings some changes to the format of the Festival di Sanremo. On the first night, as usual, the press jury voted after all 29 songs were performed live. However, while a provisional ranking is created after each night, this year, it will not be made public. Instead, the audience will only know which artists made it into the top five, but in a completely random order.

The rankings from the first three nights are crucial for the contestants, as they will contribute to the final result in the Grand Final.

After the first night, the artists who made it into the top five are:

  • Brunori Sas – “L’albero delle noci”
  • Giorgia – “La cura per me”
  • Lucio Corsi – “Volevo essere un duro”
  • Simone Cristicchi – “Quando sarai piccola”
  • Achille Lauro – “Incoscienti giovani”

Night 1 running order

  1. Gaia – “Chiamo io chiami tu”
  2. Francesco Gabbani – “Viva la vita”
  3. Rkomi – “Il ritmo delle cose”
  4. Noemi – “Se ti innamori muori”
  5. Irama – “Lentamente”
  6. Coma_Cose – “Cuoricini”
  7. Simone Cristicchi – “Quando sarai piccola”
  8. Marcella Bella – “Pelle diamante”
  9. Achille Lauro – “Incoscienti Giovani”
  10. Giorgia – “La cura per me”
  11. Willie Peyote – “Grazie ma no grazie”
  12. Rose Villain – “Fuorilegge”
  13. Shablo ft. Guè, Joshua & Tormento – “La mia parola”
  14. Olly – “Balorda nostalgia”
  15. Elodie – “Dimenticarsi alle 7”
  16. Massimo Ranieri – “Tra le mani un cuore”
  17. Tony Effe – “Damme ‘na mano”
  18. Serena Brancale – “Anima e core”
  19. Brunori SAS – “L’albero delle noci”
  20. Modà – “Non ti dimentico”
  21. Clara – “Febbre”
  22. Fedez – “Battito”
  23. Lucio Corsi –  “Volevo essere un duro”
  24. Bresh – “La tana del granchio”
  25. Sarah Toscano – “Amarcord”
  26. Joan Thiele – “Eco”
  27. Rocco Hunt – “Mille vot’ ancora”
  28. Francesca Michielin – “Fango in paradiso”
  29. The Kolors – “Tu con chi fai l’amore?”

(The winner is the orchestra, obviously.) It’s not often I completely disagree with the press jury, but this time I do. With harsh, tangible lyrics combined with an edgy electro rap sound, Fedez easily wins this selection for me. Am I alone in this? (One of the lyrics will probably need adjusting for ESC, but this seems to be a good trend this year for NF winners.) Elodie is my second favourite; this was a classy performance and I can easily see this at ESC. After that I liked Giorgia, Francesco and Rose. Achille Lauro has a heartfelt touching moment… Read more »

I think maybe a lot of people are upset that the songs they just heard for the first time last night don’t sound as familiar as the ones they’ve been listening to on repeat for the last 12 months. Folks – give things a hot minute – get to know the songs – they’re mostly gorgeous 🙂 Good music is worth getting to know.

All these people bemoaning the slower songs… tell me, do you speak Italian?

It’s okay if you don’t, but for some songs it might really help. Lyrics are important!

I agree for overall, for Eurovision tho songs should be good without understanding the lyrics because a good majority won’t understand or look up to the lyrics and will vote for their favourites of first listen. I can assure you 90% of Eurovision people to this day doesn’t know what Zitti e buoni means or Molitva but they still voted for this songs. If you need to check lyrics to appreciate the song that song wont make it far.

Ps. Didnt listen to any San remo song yet, just commenting on your sentiment

So like one in common with the actual top five is pretty good for me with Sanremo.

A non-Italian here. San Remo is not the national final for Eurovision; it is an older and more music (melody + lyrics) oriented competition than Eurovision. Unlike Eurovision, they still have a live orchestra to enjoy the music created at that moment. So they don’t (and hopefully will not in future) select a song for Eurovision, they just give the winner a chance to present his/her music in a very big competition (Eurovision) to people outside Italy. And regardless of the score they get, they always bring good music to Europe.

I like Sanremo and I know it is not for Eurovision selection; but if there are too many slow-tempo ballad songs at Sanremo, RAI should choose different song selection for Eurovision

Sanremo 2025 was like Sanremo edition from 1980s; with so many slow tempo ballad songs without diversity 🙁
Even the presenters were old, it seems that the new Director wants to make this show more appealing to order audience

Because Baby Lasagna’s song was up tempo song; making you happy 🙂 Whereas, Giorgia’s song makes listeners bored; her song is good but outdated; saw so many Italian ballad songs like her song 🙁
Still, it is a nice song but it didn’t have even any melody which stay in mind.

That’s right what I wrote: Escfans generally prefer easy, obsessive tunes.
You can say whether you like Giorgia’s song; you definitely cannot say she’s not got a unique voice. 90% of Esc singers could not even hit properly a middle note

I love a good Italian ballad. But I’ve listened to this one 3 or 4 times now and I still can’t remember a single note. Whereas if you say “Fai rumore” I can immediately sing the chorus for you. This is just a mediocre song.

Not seeing many comments about Giorgia’s performance which surprises me! Her voice is insane and love how she mugs to the camera! I did not understand the lyrics but still felt the emotion. I would call the song nostalgia rather than dated and she sings the hell out of it!

I understand voting for meaningful lyrics (I am fluent in Italian so I understood them, but lyrics alone are not enough to make me emotional), but some of those songs had barely any singing or melody which is what stroke me as a bit odd that they were being lauded. I think I would have felt it way more if there was actually an impactful melody to carry those deeply felt lyrics. That aside, I really like most of the songs this year. Out of the top 5 of the first night, Giorgia gets the push, but I also loved… Read more »

Honestly, this Sanremo festival is even less suitable for an international audience than previous ones, so I am not surprised that international fans do not understand the songs in the competition, much less the jury’s decision. It is a festival where you have to understand the Italian language because it is the words of the songs more than the melody that play the most important role. Also given such deep topics one has to have lived to understand and be touched by the songs. I, for example, who became a mother a few years ago, can say that I got… Read more »

An italian voice here.
The “boring ballads ” are meaningful songs that tell a story.
The press jury voted the lyrics not only the sound or the music.
And as you all know sanremo is also the national selection for eurovision, but is first and foremost a contest on its own.
So people will vote what they like and not what they think might fork for eurovision.

Finally. And I would also say that although in recent years those who have won have always decided to represent Italy with the winning song, it is not granted. I have the feeling that at least two artists from the top 5 of yesterday night would not go to Eurovision because it is not the environment where they can fully express their type of music (Simone Cristicchi and Brunori SAS).

I don’t know, maybe it’s because last year there were at least 5 or 6 truly incredible songs and the bar was raised almost impossibly high, but this year feels very bland in comparison. Not as much variation, the ballads are good, but none really stand out… I’m slightly disappointed. 🙁

Italian here – if everyone is surprised by the Press’ score, you have to know that Italy has a long history of poetic songwriting, and the artists in the Top5 (except for Achille Lauro and Giorgia) have very important, brave songs in terms of themes and songwriting. The press usually focus on that – the content of the song, its lyrics, its personal story behind it. Shocked to see foreigners didn’t like this year’s batch of song! For me it’s one of the strongest of recent years. The quality is very high. But I understand the language and cultural barrier… Read more »

The Eurovision fandom should be aware of this by now. Without Sanremo there wouldn’t be Eurovision. And because Italy focuses on celebrating their music culture, it also does so well at Eurovision every year. Italy is praised every year for their high quality and therefore it’s the best out of the Big 5 countries.
Greetings from Switzerland!

This year is going to be unpredictable. Also it is possible that some of the frontrunners aren’t interested in going to Eurovision. For me the clear standout last night was Rose Villain. I also enjoyed the songs from Gabb an i, Noemi, Elodie, Moda, Brunori Sas and Fedez.

Unfortunately for me Irama and Achille Lauro felt a bit mediocre. And that’s coming from someone who has Ovunque Sarai and Tu No as my winners in 2022 and 2024 and also most of the times like Achille’s entries.

Music is beautiful because it can express emotions, feelings, ideas in so many different ways. Simone Cristicchi and Brunori SAS simply have different genres, the fact that you do not appreciate a genre does not objectively make the song weak.

Simone and Brunori (and Lucio Corsi) had the best lyrics of this year by far. Italy has a strong tradition of singer-songwriters with amazing poetic lyrics and complex human feelings. The press voted for that.
