Semi-final one of Söngvakeppnin 2017 starts this evening in Iceland, when six acts will do battle for three places in the final on March 11. For the past week our readers have been voting for their favourites, and now it is time to announce the results. Who are y’all feeling?
With 788 votes cast in total in the poll, we can now reveal that Erna Mist Pétursdóttir has come out on top with her atmospheric ballad “I’ll Be Gone/ Skuggamynd“. Erna Mist received 201 votes, over 25% of all counted.
Our Wiwi jury really liked Erna Mist too, as she came in second overall with a score of 6.67/10. As wiwiblogger Luis gushed:
“What a delicious voice Erna has! She turns everything into magic. I just love how the song grows from the lower tones to the big chorus. It’s like a stairway to heaven!”
The fight for runner-up was a close one, but Aron Hannes managed to secure second place with his tropical club banger “Tonight/Nótt“.
He earned 184 votes, or just over 23% of the total. “Tonight/Nótt” was another hit with the wiwi jury, coming third with a score of 6.47/10. Wiwiblogger Dayana praised the quality of Aron’s song and loved how it “diversifies the Icelandic national selection.”
In third place is Hildur with “Bammbaramm“, who received 171 votes, 21% of the total cast.
Hildur scored 6.03 with the wiwi jury, but that is not to say that she had a lack of fans. Wiwiblogger Kristin wrote that “Bammbaramm” is “nothing but refreshing in its fun loving beat and Hildur’s vocals are flawless”.
As there are only three spaces in the final up for grabs in each semi-final, this means that our readers expect to see Júlí Heiðar Halldórsson and Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir, Rúnar Eff and Arnar Jónsson & Rakel Pálsdóttir crash out of the competition. Y’all are tough.
I didn’t think I’d have a favorite tonight, but after that performance I believe Júlí Heiðar Halldórsson and Þórdís Birna Borgarsdóttir with “Get Back Home/Heim til þín” HAVE to be in the final and possibly win it all.
@blondboybc – Oh, sorry. I know that Canada is a federal country, but I didn’t know what are the parts called. In Croatia, it’s “županije”, but it’s more like counties; there is no admistrative freedom in important laws. Every town or county can decide on things like whether drinking in parks is allowed, will a building be built on that spot or how much of local budget will be given to which institution. However, counties cannot decide on important things like legality of gay marriage, general taxes or maximum jail penalty.
This selection kills me, because there are sooooooo many great songs. Erna is my number one here, followed by Aron and the “get back home” song(a guilty pleasure of mine.) They are all fantastic though, so I’ll be ok with any of the qualifiers tonight.

@Kris Yes, that is correct! In Iceland, a lot of children gain surnames based off their father’s names. A boy with a father called Petur would have the surname ‘Petursson’ (Petur’s son), and likewise, a girl would have the surname ‘Petursdottir’ (Petur’s daughter). It’s really interesting!
I have a doubt!! Does petursdottir mean that she is the daughter of someone named Peter? Is it like that with Iceland names?
I can honestly say I like all 6 songs. Tonight, I will be happy for all 3 who pass the finals and sad for all 3 who don’t. I guess when the competition is this high that the live performance will count even more. I can’t wait to see who will bedazzel me the most.
