It’s Festival da Canção time. The 2020 edition of Portugal’s traditional music festival will go live from Lisbon for its first semi-final on February 22. The road to Eurovision 2020 has started in Portugal — and there are several top-notch acts trying to stay on it.

Eight songs will battle for four places in the March 7 Grand Final in the city of Elvas. If it was up to you, the band Blasted Mechanism would come out on top tonight with their song “Rebellion“.

The remaining spots in the grand final would be filled by Bárbara Tinoco, Elisa and Throes + The shine.

After the songs were released, we asked you to make your voices heard and you did. We counted 2,880 votes and your top four was as clear as water.

Blasted Mechanism topped your preferences with 36.22% of the votes, or 1,043 votes. “Rebellion” is the only song performed in English at this year’s edition of Festival da Canção.

Bárbara Tinoco‘s French chanson inspired “Passe-Partout” came in second with 26.88% of the tally. That’s 774 votes.

In third place came Elisa with her contemporary ballad “Medo de Sentir“. She gathered votes from 15.83% of our readers, which is 456 votes.

If it was up to our readers, Throes + The Shine would snatch the last available ticket to the final. “Movimento” got 11.15%. That’s 321 votes.

MEERA, Filipe Sambado, JJaZZ and Ian Mucznik would end their Festival da Canção 2020 run tonight. All four acts combined only account for 9.94% of the vote. Ouch!

LOL Rebelgium! Well, despite what Europe might think, Portuguese can speak and express themselves in pretty good English haha No way we would vote that bad live performance to the final, we have some pride. That was unforgivable. Barbara is now the clear front runner. She is adorable but she looks too shy and can’ dance with the choreography. She is charming and innocent and that works in her favor tho. I am afraid she will be out shined easily in Eurovision but they did make an effort not to just show up singing and they can improve with better… Read more »

Passe-partout feels like the obvious choice for me, in the same way Amar pelos dois was in 2017 and Diogo Picarra’s song probably would’ve been in 2018. Rebellion is fine, but I feel like we’ve heard a lot of songs like that at Eurovision before, and in a tough batch of semis and coming off of two less-than-stellar finishes, Portugal really ought to play to their strengths. Passe-partout is unique without being overly pretentious or impenetrable (the way some people – not me, but I get the reasoning – saw Telemoveis). It’s classy. I could see it doing well for… Read more »

When was the last time you heard a song at ESC that addressed humanity’s role in the ecological breakdown? This song is a lament.. And so contemporary. We’ve heard nothing like this before.. Ever.

I really couldn’t imagine the juries in Portugal voting for a song in English

They probably won’t although, in 2018, they’ve managed to give one English song just enough points to send it to the final, perhaps due to it being an improvement over the travesty of FDC’s first two English songs in 2017.

Babora is just fantastic and her song is great! Passé-partout could do top 10 in Rotterdam. And as for blasted with rebellion, it’s great but I’d prefer if they translated part of the song into Portuguese

My favourite is Barbara Tinoco. Blasted are not bad at all, but I don´t want an english entry for Portugal.

I really want Meera and JJaZZ to get through.
This IS the semi final of death this national final season. I can’t be too upset if they don’t.
