Another former Eurovision act is said to looking at representing Cyprus at Eurovision 2021. A Greek chat show has claimed that the Greek American singer Kalomira is in talks with the Cyprus broadcaster CyBC.
Kalomira previously represented Greece at Eurovision 2008, with the Laïko-pop track “Secret Combination”. The performance gave Greece a third-place finish and remains a favorite amongst some fans. But Kalomira could be due for a comeback.
The news was revealed this morning on Open TV in Greece. The show said that Kalomira was in talks with broadcaster CyBC to represent Greece at Eurovision 2021.
The news also follows a video chat Kalomira recently did with the Belgian Eurovision site Songfestival.be. They asked Kalomira about returning to Eurovision and she confirmed it was something that had been discussed in previous years.
Kalomira gave her support for Stefania as Greece’s representative for Rotterdam, but confirmed that Cyprus was a possibility for 2021.
She explained, “Cyprus is something that I’m circulating. So who knows. I would go for Cyprus. We’ll see.” Kalomira also joked that after spending weeks in lockdown at her American home, she was eager to get out. She added, “I am in the mood to do Eurovision!”
Last year, there was speculation that Kalomira had been approached to represent Greece at Eurovision 2020. However, this never eventuated.
Earlier this year, Kalomira and Greece’s Eurovision 2021 act Stefania joined the Greek Eurovision songwriter Dimitris Kontopoulos for his #Qsessions series of online home concerts. The pair performed a cover of Ani Lorak’s “Shady Lady”.
More Cyprus rumours for Eurovision 2021
Open TV also included a round-up of the latest rumours from Cyprus. Eurovision 2018 star Eleni Foureira is said to be meeting this week with the Greek Swedish hitmaker — and “Fuego” producer — Alex Papaconstantinou. Foureira has previously been reported as being in talks with CyBC to return to Eurovision for 2021.
Also said to be under consideration by Cyprus is Ilias Kozas, the lead singer of the Greek rock band Koza Mostra. They previously represented Greece at Eurovision 2013 with the crowd favourite “Alcohol Is Free”.
With Greece having already invited back Eurovision 2020 act Stefania to be their supergirl in Rotterdam, Greek music stars are turning to Cyprus as their best chance to make it to Eurovision in 2021.
So far, interested artists include The Voice Australia‘s Despina Savva, Greek X Factor star Ian Stratis, Kazakh-Greek X Factor star Eirini Papadopoulou, Australia Decides act Leea Nanos, Cyprus’ Eurovision 2012 star Ivi Adamou, reality stars Konnie Metaxa & Tasos Xiarcho, pop-rock group Melisses, pop icon Vangelis Kakouriotis and singer/model/actress Katerina Stikoudi.
But now it sounds like broadcaster CyBC may be starting to focus on just a few big names.
What do you think? Would you like to see Kalomira return to Eurovision? Or is Eleni Foureira a better choice? Tell us your thoughts below!
I believe Ilias would be a really interesting act…heard that he is starting a solo career and rumors say that he has really nice material ready
It’s rumoured this morning that Rachel Lester will be representing Cyprus at Eurovision 2021.
Aren’t there Cypriot stars who are more relevant than Kalomira, who quite frankly makes Eleni sound like Dami Im
Those Cypriot stars have already represented Cyprus and Greece in Eurovision.
What’s dammit and why are you comparing it with Eleni?
FORGET IT! If Cyprus doesn’t have local talent they should withdraw.
Pressed and jealous. Does it mean that San Marino should also withdraw?
Cyprus have been participating since 80s with Greek and Cypriot artists. What’s wrong with you?
Michalis Hatzigiannis is one very famous cypriot artist, also had a huge summer hit again this year but overlooked by current cypriot broadcaster regime i guess
He represented Cyprus in 1998, do you even know it?
Plus, he doesn’t want to do Eurovision. Why do you all think that going to Eurovision is everyone’s dream?
He’s not interested ffs. He thinks it’s not for him whatever that means
Oh my God this is so ridiculous.
Why the hell to send Kalomira? She is one of the worst singers in ESC history.
This is not a reality show for best vocalists, it’s euroVISION. She succeeded against all odds in 2008, so she is considered one of the most successful entries of 00s, and rightfully so.
The “vision” part isn’t what it’s about either. It’s a song contest.
It’s not a song contest exactly, otherwise Lordi wouldn’t have won, Azerbain 2011, Estonia 2001, Latvia 2002 and the list goes on.
Kalomira fits in perfectly with this joke contest so yes it could be her lol
I don’t get why Greece’s ERT went for an unknown artist like Stefania while Cyprus has all the big names lining up for Eurovision. This would be crazy a few years ago! Wow, how things change! Eleni’s impact actually. I love Kalomira, I really wanted her to win in 2008 but ERT didn’t believe in her as much as they did with Sakis Rouvas and Helena. However, she managed to achieve the unthinkable and get a top 3 result for Greece. A shame that northern countries ignored Secret Combination, which eventually made her lose a higher position. She’s adorable and… Read more »
I wouldn’t call Stefania an unknown…I think she was a strong candidate for 2020/21 because she was Dutch and a former JESC star who had made some waves in the Greek market.
I didn’t say she is not talented. I only said that she is unknown to the Greek public, she has no discography in Greece and none of her singles became hits in Greece (or Cyprus). She was completely unknown prior to the announcement to be the Greek representative for 2020. However, if you ask the general public now, they wouldn’t know who she is.
Even in the Netherlands she is not a star, she’s only known in a specific market for kids TV.
No hate, i think she is wonderful and talented, i am just stating facts.
At this point, tomorrow the rumour will be I’m representing Cyprus!!
Not quite sure why PIK are trying to stir up so much buzz.
PIK is CyBC in Greek.
This is all media talk though. It’s not like Cybc is announcing all these things.
Sadly its looking like they’re bringing Alex P back again. Nothing against him personally, but I think it’s time some other artists and songwriters had a chance to shine. G:Son, Barker, Pinayi, Kirkorov etc should take a step back for a while and let some fresh faces take the wheel.
He is actually of Greek descent.
Look Malta and Cyprus are small countries. They do have talent, but it’s a really small one. Not a lot of songwriters would get them a spot in the final let alone the win so it’s obvious they will look outside of their countries. Money must be spent with mind not just with heart.
I don’t get why some fans are mad about it. Just chill. Cyprus has chosen local talent and songwriters before, it’s good that they are changing things. I am sure it won’t stay the same format for many years. I am also happy they changed their mind about Sandro. The guy is lovely and talented but had no links whatsowever with Greece and Cyprus and he was completely unknown and the song wasn’t a hit either. Very random choice. Malta has been asking Swedish writers for years, how come this is fine but Cyprus’s decisions are annoying you? Same for… Read more »
singer/model/actress/multimixer milkshake machine Katerina Stikoudi… Oh Gosh… no!
Malta has hardly a population over 500,000 people and can afford to make shows like X-Factor where to launch careers of new artists.
Cyprus has a population over 1 million people, why don’t they do the same without depending on Greece?
Because Malta never succeeded with X Factor, why would Cyprus follow this format when they had success with internal selections of popular artists.
Cyprus is on full Eurovision mode and is investing on their entries so it’s better to save their money on staging/song and a well-known artist who will bring interest to the show and more viewers. I don’t get why some of you are so negative.
Cyprus is doing exactly what San Marino should be doing.
I would not call Malta’s result in 2019 a success. Yes, they went to the final but that was expected. They invested a lot on staging (i remember they hired the people behind Pink’s performance at British awards + a famous choreographer) but they did poorly in televoting.
As much as I would love to see Eleni on ESC again, I’d equally like to see Kalomira. A seriously charismatic performer.
Kalomira has charisma of a turd, and weak vocals even chicken troll netta sounds better, or monotone dadi lmao
if cyprus wants that last place nq with such outdated music, go for this arrogant diva
A true Eurovision fan would NEVER call Netta a ‘chicken troll’.
Man Cyprus… Save all these acts for 2022 and so forth. I never knew Cyprus had this
many artist wanting to represent them. The truth be told… even if Loreen wanted to represent, Eleni would probably get the ticket to Rotterdam. THIS IS MY THEORY AND
MY OPINION!
It seems like the Cypriot broadcaster loves attention. Yet again sources are reporting that another big name is in talks with the broadcaster. No other broadcaster creates this much hype about potential artists.. they got one 2nd place and now they think they’re an esc powerhouse?! move on CyBC ur hype has expired!!!
what’s wrong with hype? it is usually not a good move because there are high expectations which often lead to disappointment (partially 2019 and 100% the 2020 entry)
As much as Eleni and Kalomira are good artists I’d really like Cyprus not to go back to A female pop banger just yet. It does seem slightly desperate of them to do the same kind of song two years in a row and then when something else doesn’t get a lot of attention they just revert back to Eurofan bait
I enjoyed her act in 2008. However, I despise that in the Eurovision sphere, Cyprus is treated like something fictional rather than a country with its own merits. Some artists need more decency. Like, for real. Artists from Cyprus – show them who you are and what you are capable of! And CyBC (Cypriot broadcaster), I beg you to show respect towards your own artists again and allow one or several of them to fly the Cypriot flag in Rotterdam next year.
I have a felling that after 4 years Greece will have a better result than Cyprus
Amm Dimitris against Alex P. I think it’s obvious who wins. (Alex of course)
Dimitris :
4 top 3
4 top 10
1 top 20
1 NQ
Alex P:
2 top 3
1 top 10
2 top 20
Well Kontopoulos is more successful than Alex P in Eurovision at least, and Stefania is definitely more talented than Kalomira. So I also think that Greece potentially will do better than Cyprus this year.
Love Stefania, but Dimitris’ songs are quite dated imo. Alex P. produces much stronger song. And we don’t know if it’s Kalomira, Eleni and Ivi and many others are still in the game 🙂
Helena Paparizou could also be in the game. According to Star.gr last day’s reports, in the case that Foureira rejects the offer, CY Broadcaster has been in talks with another artist whose potentials, success and star quality equate/match/pair to that of Foureira’s. Helena is the only pop artist in Greece that has made an impact similar to that of Eleni; therefore I believe it was her they were talking about.
I doubt they were talking about Helena. She had her chance in 2018 and she rejected the offer. I think they meant Kalomira.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion , but the fact is that Kontopoulos is much more successful when it comes to ESC than Alex P, who btw DESTROYED Tamta with the song he wrote for her.
Alex P is more commercial with fresh tunes (recycled though). Kontopoulos music is hit or miss and in many cases is dated.
Kontopoulos songs would’ve flopped without the help of Fokas to do the staging.
Kalomira??? After 13 years??? Why is that??? Don’t they have any young talented artists in Cyprus?
She’s 35. Is the retirement age that low in Cyprus?
Kalomira must be 60 right now lmao
Kalomira is not active in the music industry but she’s well known and everyone knows her in both Greece and Cyprus. For me it is weird that she is considering Eurovision, because she’s not an active artist and she’s more like a youtube/IG influencer based in US.
Vocally in 2008 she was so bad in a very simple song. But back then she was at least a very sweet charming young lady. Now she is not even that.
with the juries I can see her NQ
Since when juries don’t vote for catchy pop tunes? Cyprus 2018, Germany 2010,Ukraine 2012, Turkey 2009.
CyBc is a vaccum for famous Greek names which is not something bad, maybe Greece could start triying. I know that the song is more important than the artist but in this case these famous artists come with the music record label included, and those labels are the ones producing the good results…
Since 2018 everybody wants to represent Cyprus, it’s so funny, Cyprus is becoming the country with the most rumoured acts of all competing countries. The number of interested persons is huge for this small country.
we call it Eleni effect !
Since Turkey is out of ESC than many countries are trying to use that turkish oriental sound to catch the votes from those who want Turkey back 😀
there is no such thing as turkish oriental sound. it’s middle eastern sound and Israel is doing a great job promoting it.
this year it is because Greece has already announced their act.
