She’s a four-time Melodifestivalen star but now Mariette Hansson has something new to celebrate. Mariette recently shared news of her engagement to long-term girlfriend Isabelle Grönqvist. But it wasn’t just any old casual proposal — Isabelle had put together an epic and very romantic event.
Mariette and Isabelle have been a couple since earlier this year, and confirmed their relationship at a Melodifestivalen event in March. While Mariette is known as a singer-songwriter, Isabelle works as a photographer and designer.
Mariette shared the good news with a post to her Instagram. But it wasn’t just a simple matter of a photo with a caption. Mariette had a tale to tell of the romantic and epic surprise Isabelle had planned for her.
Mariette’s marriage proposal
Mariette posted the story to her Instagram, originally in Swedish:
Unkempt in musky clothes. Tired and grateful.
Yesterday there was a piece of A4 paper in the kitchen. I’ve been getting clues in recent weeks in the form of some kind of puzzle from Isabelle, but I was not really prepared for this.
The paper contains instructions and a packing list. The house echoed empty this Saturday morning and I really do not understand anything. It was just me at home and the damn paper that in the name of honesty made me more nervous the more times I read it.
At 4pm there is a red (fast) car outside the door. In it sits a man I recognise. He looks happy but sly. I hop in with my weekend bag which I was asked to pack for the night and he drives south.
40 minutes later I was released. I took off the blindfold I was given and realised that I was standing in the exact same country house where Bell and I exchanged glances for the first time 6.5 years ago. Terrified but expectant, I open the heavy old door to the barn.
There she sits. Beautiful as a dream. Surrounded by lit candles and wearing her handsome double-breasted suit. There is a red note of the day next to her. The one I had not received in the morning. I open it with shaking hands.
“May I be your wife?”
The best note I have ever received. Nothing feels so obvious and written in the stars as that she will be my wife and future everything. I want nothing more than to be hers. We enjoy the moment together. Just her and I in a real sky castle of love.
She pours champagne into my glass and tells me that she rented the suite in the house directly across from the barn. A smaller castle. On shaky legs we walk towards the house, close together. Bell asks me to go first and stays a step behind me when I open the door.
There stands our whole family. The family we grew up with and the family we chose in life. I have a hard time seeing all the faces behind my tears of joy. Everyone was there for us. To celebrate our love.
She had not rented the suite. She had rented the whole place and taken our whole crazy family there. We danced into the wee hours. Appreciated life and took advantage of every second.
