Picture: Sarah Louise Bennett (EBU) / Joost Klein

This weekend Joost Klein had the crowd of Pinkpop – one of the Netherlands’ biggest pop festivals – in his grip. And not just while singing “Europapa”. A slip of the lips at the festival — coupled with the Fryslân native updating his socials — has everyone wondering whether Joost will return to Eurovision 2025 on behalf of The Netherlands.

The Netherlands has yet to formally announce its participation in the song contest in Switzerland. Usually the Benelux country is one of the first to confirm. At this point in recent years, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS was already receiving songs as part of their internal selection process. However, after Joost Klein became the first participant to ever be disqualified from the contest, AVROTROS is having second thoughts.

Earlier this month the broadcaster made it clear that it wants a broad and “truly independent” investigation into the most recent Eurovision — and structural changes in the way its organised. Its participation remains under “consideration” pending all of that.

Joost Klein hints at Eurovision 2025 return during Pinkpop

Joost has toured the world — from Canada to the Netherlands — since the grand final he was forced to miss. Announced as a headliner for Pinkpop, Joost took the stage in front of an excited crowd of festival-goers. During his set, he said to the public: “Why the fuck not, 2025?” That hints strongly that he wants another go at the song contest. The LED screen showed “joost klein 2025.”

Besides performing “Europapa”, Joost also premiered “The Bird Song” – another option he had for Eurovision 2024.

The Dutch star fuelled these rumours of a return even further on Sunday afternoon when he changed both his Instagram bio and the name of his broadcast channel from Eurovision 2024 to Eurovision 2025

Prior to being named the Dutch hope in Malmö, Joost used this same broadcast channel to promote his Eurovision bid. The channel and social media campaign were among the driving forces that gave the Eurovision 2024 star the opportunity to actually go to the song contest.

If AVROTROS were to participate in Switzerland next year, it wouldn’t be so strange if they did select Joost. After all, in 2021, when Jeangu Macrooy had been deprived of his opportunity to go to Eurovision as a result of the pandemic, the broadcaster was one of the first to reselect their 2020 entrant.

Do you think that Joost Klein should return at Eurovision? What kind of song would you like to see him perform in 2025? Let us know in the comments down below!

It’ time to remind you that Joost is not under investigation for any kind of physical attack. He is under investigation for “illegal threats”.

Nobody claims he has touched anyone.

Thanks, and whatever he did must have been bad, because the last thing the EBU would have wanted would be to disqualify a fan favourite on the day of the contest. That didn’t help them at all.

I’ve got no problem with AVROTROS giving Joost another shot at Eurovision, but shouldn’t they at least wait for the results of the Swedish police Investigation? Especially when they seem to be so obsessed with investigations?

If he brings the same song with different lyrics he absolutely would be disqualified for bringing a previously released song. And he should be. If he wasn’t, what would stop acts from entering established hits and just singing them in a different language or some other change to the lyrics.

Piet

Of course he shouldn’t bring the same song! He should bring a new song with very cute lyrics in the semis and then change those lyrics in the final to go all the way! Of course he will be disqualified for changing the lyrics but it would make one hell of an anti-EBU statement.

That stunt would get him disqualified all over again. There is a cut off date for when all revisions and changes have to be in. If you change it after that, you are in violation. You could probably get away with a new ‘oooh’ or ‘yeah’, but anything else would be a like disqualification.

He would show he doesn’t care about the EBU and their incompetence! That statement would make him a true hero. Much better than achieving a sixth or seventh place in the final, because let’s be honest, he would never win anyway due to lack of jury support.

absolutely correct, pre-recorded backing track is sooo a form of cheating, back in the good old days you only had live singing honestly, as well as a orchestra (wish they’d bring back the orchestra but sadly won’t happen i think)

Vjera Brdar

Yeah, the orchestra is definitely not coming back – modern music is just too complex. Recreating it on stage witb an otchestra as well as computer sounds can be done, of course, bit it would be too expensive, not to mention a logistics nightmare. Vocals, on the other hand, they need to be all live. No exceptions.

Fatima

Hang on Vjera, San Remo has both modern music and and an orchestra. At the same time, Eurovision has an even greater logistics nightmare now with all the overcooked staging ideas. Acts were on and off the stage far quicker in the orchestra era, and it was fun to see the backing singers do their thing.

Sally

Sally

Reply to  Fatima

I know when I was keeping my own score card- anyone who had lead vocals or vocal distortions/gimmicks on the ‘backing track’ was automatically deducted 5 points out of a possible 10 in the singing category and some lost more for letting the ‘backing track’ sing most of the lead or for poorly singing what little they did sing.

All vocals need to be live. Since they added the ‘backing vocal track’, way too many artists have decided to use their allotted 6 people to put on a dance act instead of a vocal performance.

Agree with you on this. When Dion won in 1988 she needed no backing or staging at all, she didn’t even need to move her feet. Her vocals and her ability to convey the feel of the song were more than enough. And she was only 20. We want more like that in the contest.

Personally, I really like Joost, but this situation is confusing. The dq was and is still a bit confusing (my home news even speculated about it somehow being related to the press conference) It would be a good thing to clear up everything around the 2024 exit before eventually beginning on the next chapter.

Also, he does seem to need some sort of assistance. It is very possible he knows exactly what and how, but the others have to know, too.
