Anouk’s “Birds” was a tour de force of atmospheric moodiness, and after her subsequent album, “Sad Singalong Songs”, it was a case of Lana Del Who? But truth be told, we were a little concerned that she might become trapped in a never ending cycle of gloom. We needn’t have worried. Judging by her 2 latest releases, she’s not a woman to be pigeon-holed.

Anouk has been recruited by dj and fellow Dutchy, Nicky Romero, to provide vocals on his newest floor filler “Feet On The Ground”. Most of you will already be familiar with Nicky following his chart-topping collaboration with Avicii – “I Could Be The One”. The Dutch duo make quite a formidable team, with Anouk’s vocals bringing soul to an otherwise vapid song. Sure, it may lack the nuance of some of her previous hits, but if it’s a weekend head-banger you’re after this hits the spot.
“You & I”
Before you start fretting that Anouk has become a slave to the dance floor, take a listen to her single from last spring, “You & I.” It showcases a brighter, more optimistic side to the Eurovision 2012 star. Rather than dwelling on the morose, she looks to the future and sings of keeping her heart and soul alive in her quest for love. The song is a return to her rock roots, but still maintains the gothic aura which endeared her to the European public. The haunting melody and vocals will stay with you long after the music has stopped.
At this rate it’s beginning to seem like the woman can do no wrong (well, apart from that misjudged snipe at Ilse De Lange). But what do y’all think of Anouk’s genre hopping antics? Is an eclectic range of hits a good thing? Or should she stick to the one style?
