Last night David Bryan, who represented Romania at Eurovision 2011 with his band Hotel FM, took part in the blind auditions of “The Voice of Romania”. The “Change” singer wowed the coaches and set a new record: within five seconds of belting out “It Will Rain” by Bruno Mars, three coaches slammed their buzzers and turned their seats. The fourth didn’t take long to recognize the singer’s outstanding vocal abilities, either.

David Bryan fell in love with Romania and moved to Transylvania six years ago. He won the Romanian national Eurovision selection last year and performed in Dusseldorf with his band Hotel FM. Despite placing 17th at Eurovision—what he calls the high point in his musical career—he admitted to feeling disillusioned by what happened afterwards. Eurovision did not open the doors he had hoped it would, he disagreed with the other band members about how to move forward, and he decided to dissolve Hotel FM and restart his solo career. The popular TV show “The Voice of Romania” is the first step, and so far it’s taking him in the right direction.

After all four coaches turned their seats, only one of them recognized David. But each of them tried to woo him onto their teams anyway. Marius Moga, the Romanian producer, won him over by saying that he wrote a song for Maroon 5 and that he could write a song for him, too. We’ll keep you posted.

Update 1 December 2012: Unfortunately, David Bryan’s journey to become “The Voice of Romania” ended today. He was eliminated by his coach after he sang a song in Romanian. Ouch.
