Ooo la la! France 3 has announced that Destan, Joanna Lagrave or Twin Twin will represent France at Eurovision 2014! The three artists will battle it out on January 26.

The national final will take place on a special episode of Les Chansons d’abord, the French version of Top of the Pops that has been broadcast since 8 September. It’s hosted by the lovely natasha St-Pier, who represented France at Eurovision in 2001. Each contestant will perform their song, and then the public will have an entire month to decide on who should sing for them in Copenhagen. Perhaps France 3 regrets some hasty decisions from the past. Anyway, the winner will be named on 2 March at 17h on France 3.

Who Are They?

None of this year’s contestants are as established France’s recent contestants Patricia Kaas, Anggun or Amandine Bourgeois. But each of them is a rising star. France 3 is ready to give someone a boost.

Destan is a French pop group made up of  Dean, Quentin, and Kilian. In ancient Persian “Destan” refers to an epic poem. We don’t know if their song will prove to be epic, but we do know that Kilian looks hot in a tank top.

Joanna Lagrave released her first single—”L’école des duplicatas”—in 2009 after appearing on French talent show “Star Academy”. She came fourth. Here she is paying homage to La Whitney Houston.

Twin Twin, anothet trio, like to mix electro, rock, rap and funk. It includes one pair of twins—Lorent Idir and François Djemel—and Patrick Biyik. According to France 3 their motto is “Live life!” We are loving their bright colored clothes!

How They Were Selected

A committee of 14 people chose the three finalists from a field of 12 contestants. The vote took place in two stages. First the committee listened to 12 songs blindly and voted for their top five. Then, in a second round, the three finalists were chosen by a majority vote. The 14-person committee consisted of the following people.

Laurent Bentata (CEO of Stage Entertainment France)

Bruno Berbers (Casting director)

Laura Cès (singer and actress)

Michelin Valerie (manageress)

Franck Saurat (TV producer entertainment)

Dominique Bourron (France Bleu)

A representative of Eurovision fans: Farouk Vallette (Member of OGAE office)

Morgane Buret, a TV viewer who won a contest organized by france3.fr.

Thierry Langlois (A director at France 3)

Yann Chapellon (CEO of France Televisions Distribution)

Marie-Claire Mezerette (Director of the games and entertainment unit of France 3)

Frédéric Valencak (Assistant to the Director of the unit games and entertainment France 3, Head of the French delegation at Eurovision)

Olivier Daube (France Ô)

Mary De Vivo (Director of the tank)

Do you know anything about the three finalists? Do any of them stand out to you vocally? Can you imagine a French boy band at Eurovision? Let us know in the comments box below!

Destan, Joanna , or Twin twin? Destan is my first choice. They will give something new from France in group… Joanna is very talented. Sadly, Twin Twin is out of my list…

I am tired of manufactured teenish pop bands in the likes of 1D … so this Destan does not stray away from that … France had tried to produce in the 90s bands in the style of the BSB (like Alliage) but trying to make one in the shape of 1D shows no originality and not credibility. Same old same old. Eurovision fans may get tired of ballads (or in other words, not want songs that slow down the upbeat feel Eurovision has been known for in the last 14 years) but when I listen to Joanna I know that’s… Read more »

Depending on how strong Joanna’s song is, she’d probably be the best choice. Or are we tired of ballads now? Donno, have to hear the songs. Maybe Twin Twin will come up with something entertaining and hilarious. I quite like Destan & I agree, it’ll be neat to see if they’re chosen & how well the poppy boy band would do. They’d need a really catchy number though.

Twin Twin would obviously be the worst choice. Rap and Eurovision? That’s a no-no. Joanna is alright (I’m guessing a ballad is not out of the question for her), but I am hoping that Destan make the cut. I agree with Padraig, they do sound like One Direction and it would be interesting to see how they do in Copenhagen.

PS: Is this the best that France has got to offer today? C’est triste.

Again it all relies on the chosen song but so far musically speaking Johanna is remarkable as she was during her days at Star Academy in 2009. She was a pleasure for me to see sing every week. She is the kind of performer I want to see. Not into teenish crap nor in the twin twin joke.

Wait to listen the love song from Destan. It’s half in french, half in english and sounds very well with a really nice melody.

I want Johanna because she is the only one that has a minimum of notoriety around teenagers, grace as her the Eurovision can become popular again !!!!

Judging on the last few contests people are fed up of the French sending a solo female artist and Twin Twin seem terrible, so that just leaves Destan, who look and sound like a French One Direction. Given the right song they could potentially do very well.

I think it’s unlikely that Twin Twin will win, as France 3 isn’t very popular in France (that’s my experiece) and almost watched by older people… So I think it’ll be Joanna Lagrave Who’ll be selected. But it’s also possible that Destan or Twin Twin will be chosen. It depends on the song. 🙂

None of them really stand out to me, unless they have a killer song I think France will fail once again.

I have a feeling this could go horribly wrong and twin twin would end up winning the selection with a joke entry ..
