Internationally acclaimed pop star Alexandra Stan, one of the names we put forward as potential winners of Eurovision for Romania, is reportedly considering submitting a song to Selectia Nationala 2014, as part of her comeback.

For now, it is just a rumour, fueled by Alexandra herself. She told an inquiring fan that a decision regarding her participation would be made public soon. The fact that she did not decline, as she did in the past, is regarded by many as a “Yes”. But first, for those of you who have just emerged from under a stone, who is Alexandra Stan? And why would she say yes now?

Born in 1989 in Constanta, Romania, Alexandra Stan first shot to fame at the end of 2009, when her debut single peaked at number 18 in the national charts. However, it was her sophomore release in 2010, “Mr. Saxobeat”, that brought her international acclaim, and her musical career skyrocketed.

With “Mr. Saxobeat” and her album “Saxobeats”, Alexandra Stan stormed the charts all over Europe, but also in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Brazil. She was voted “Best Romanian Act” at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards. Subsequent singles also did well, although she is yet to reach the worldwide success of “Mr. Saxobeat” again.

In the summer of 2013, her career took a wrong turn when her manager/boyfriend, Marcel Prodan, beat her senseless, which outraged the fans and the musical industry alike. Alexandra decided to annul her contract with Prodan, sue him (the trial is pending), cancel all her concerts, and take a six-month break.

Which brings us to today, when Alexandra Stan is planning her big comeback. On January 15, the day that Selectia Nationala submission window opened, Alexandra announced her fans that they are in for a surprise. The fact that she did not deny rumours that she is planning her Eurovision debut is making many of them hopeful that this is the year that Alexandra Stan finally enters – and wins – Eurovision. She recently recorded an upbeat song which, according to our sources, is Eurovision material, and is said to be in talks with her new management team to submit it to TVR’s national selection.

We reached out to Alexandra Stan for comment, but she is yet to respond.

Until we have official confirmation or denial, what do you think about a possible bid from Alexandra Stan? Could she beat Paula Seling & Ovi or Stefan Stan & TeddyK? And what are her chances of bringing the Eurovision trophy to Bucharest?

@ Padraig Jude: not to pick on you, but if you’re going to be sarcastic with me at least be clever – avoid reading me. Just saying 😀

Yeah, she was all over the radio here in Canada too! It would be a nice comeback & Eurovision is such a positive atmosphere (most of the time lol) It would be good for her 😀 Hope she decides to do it & her song is a good one!

Personally I wasn’t a fan of Mr Saxobeat but I’d still be interested to see what Alexandra might come up with. After all, I imagine she’s has access to some world class writers and producers. As for the argument that Eurovision is just for debutants, that’s a load of baloney. Loreen, Margaret Berger, Anouk and Marco Mengoni have all been around longer than Alexandra and look how well they did. @Charles, not to pick on you, but if you’re going to be snarky at least be clever – the word you couldn’t be bothered to spell (I’m guessing Inna) is… Read more »

Well..this could go two ways.

She could represent Romania with a good song, decent vocals and (I’m sure of it) get a very good place in the final.
Or, she could represent Romania with a good song, awful vocals and get a very bad place or even not qualify to the final (but I doubt that).

Anyways, I still think Ovi & Paula Seling are going to represent Romania..but let’s see. It already seems like Selectia Nationala will be an interesting show.

Considering that this girl has done nothing but dance music (like another boring Romanian singer whose name I won’t even bother to spell) … I can honestly say with conviction that nobody cares about the qualities of her live singing (if such even exists) if she is to represent Romania in Eurovision with another bullshit crappy dance tune like that one above … It has happened before many times (I’m talking to you “suicidal” Ruslana) and as far as I remember nobody was even bothered with that … there was a whole circus happening on stage distracting us all from… Read more »

Eurovision is a contest for debutants, since when…then where we put Bonnie Tyler, Engelbert Humperdinck, ABBA and many others participants?

She is basically the Romanian version of Cheryl cole or Tulisa … Produces simple pop for people with limited understanding of good music and would be very poor singing live in eurovision .. It will be a big risk for her to take…

OMG yes! Because she was recording that new single a few months ago and she gave us a little teaser, but hasn’t released it yet. She’s been tweeting that she’s been working on new projects and like you say, has a surprise for us! 😀 I’m getting myself ridiculously excited now… Imagine seeing her in Copenhagen! Ahhhhh!

If she will decide to participate it will be a shock, I think many contenders will withdraw from the contest because she has virtually LEGIONS of fans in Romania (and in other European countries) and I’m sure she will win Selectia Nationala on the spot, not even the jury will dare to vote against her but is it fair? Eurovision is a contest for debutants not for accomplished singers…

I read some reviews that said that Romania can not afford organizing Eurovision Song Contest, they are posted by unknown people who consider Romania a third world country, all wrong … you better documented and you will find the country it really is not as backward as some believe. Romania’s representative to be sure that will be a top competitor, we’re going to support him and we will all be proud of him. 🙂

She’d be a great choice for Romania! With a good song I’d argue that she would be very difficult to beat in Copenhagen.

Romania has incredible depth of talent. If Alexandra is in too it’s going to be a very difficult choice for Romania.

Mr. Saxobeat was even popular over here in the States. I love Alexandra, my favorite of her songs is probably Lemonade. She’s so great and if she submits a song I hope it’ll be great. Romania are in it to win it this year! Do they have enough money to host Eurovision 2015?
